MICHELLE MONET BIOGRAPHY
I am a self-taught artist who discovered my love for visual art while doodling in a cafe in Cape Town, South Africa in 1996. Up until that point I made my living as a vocalist, composer, guitarist and impersonator.
I performed around the US and abroad in a variety of concert halls, showrooms and productions in various shows (See MUSIC PAGE) until I had this ‘calling’ to switch passions to visual art.
My art is something that evolved from my years of drawing and collage work. After a semi midlife ‘crisis/breakdown/breakthrough in my life (at age 36!) I realized I was fascinated with drawing pictures. I sketched and doodled obsessively ..all the time…everywhere I went for months.
Up until that point I had never even drawn a stick figure so needless to say I was pretty surprised by my sudden compulsion to draw! I read only one book on drawing called ‘Drawing on the Right side of the brain’ and it literally changed my life and opened up my brain to the possiblities of art!
I started out drawing with a pencil, then switched to painting with acrylics, then watercolors, then found polymer clay.
Fast forward to today. Now I ‘mix’ my mediums together to create my one of a kind 3d polymer clay creations.
The process usually begins with my drawing or doodle. (in pencil or pen), ….then I add a mixture of polymer clays on top of my drawing and press the clay down. Then I bake my creation in a special oven and then finally I add the embellishments and quotations to make the final piece.
I love the process of finding interesting, funny, sometimes serious or inspirational quotes and using them with my sculptures! Sometimes I am in a humorous mood other times a more spiritual mood so I rarely get bored and I never duplicate my art so each piece is always an original.
They key to my work is that I always strive to have FUN when I work and explore all the possiblities —- even break some rules! Creativity is a healer and I love being able to get up in the morning and create new works of art. Thanks for visiting:)
