Moonshine Jug Pottery

Moonshine Jug Pottery was began in 2004 with a very simple purpose: to make attractive and functional ceramics that were each unique and reflected our own aesthetic. This has grown to mean pots that reflect our own sense of humor, as much of our current pots have a whimsical or satirical quality.

I owe much inspiration to the Anna Pottery of Illinois and to The Mad Potter of Biloxi, George Ohr. Both these potteries made commemorative flasks and jugs that commented satirically on events of the day from prohibition to the presidential election of 1876. Their work could range from lighthearted to sinister, something we rarely think of in functional ceramics.

I owe much as well to the artists who have taught me along the way: the fellow members of my Potters Club, the potters who have offered advice, notable Michael at Boneyard Pottery in Champaign. My partner, Ann, has long offered me encouragement and valuable insight as well as the occasional elbow grease. We make it a point to give back to our community. Over eight years we have taken part in fundraising for the Food Pantry, HIV awareness, and Health Care Access.

As MudBugs approaches our ninth year we are looking to add more brick-and-mortar galleries to our outlets. Beginning with just the Illinois Artisans Gallery in Rend Lake, Illinois, we have now added galleries in Tuscola, Illinois, and a coop in our home of Urbana, Illinois and seasonal appearances in Decatur and Bloomington, Illinois.

On Etsy MudBugs specializes in Moonshine Jugs and flasks. We are very proud of our 100% satisfaction rating on Etsy and work to keep the customer satisfied. We generally ship out USPS Priority within 24 hours and you can expect to receive your item within three days of shipping. Every item is signed and stamped with our mascot, the cootie.

MudBugs Pottery began online in 2004 with a sturdy electric wheel, some porcelain clay, and a raku kiln. Many pots later our work is also found at the Illinois State Artisans Gallery at Rend Lake, and VintageKarma in Tuscola, Illinois.

Murphy was found at the Danville, IL animal shelter. He was in need of a home and we were in need of a dog. He has worked out better than we might have expected. He is the reaason we do all this.
