Obsidian forms when lava cools rapidly and doesn't crystalize, thus becoming volcanic glass. Layers of gas bubbles remaining from the lava flow can create wonderful effects as the iridescent rainbow sheen that this rock possesses. The clear, dramatic colors make this gem special and an incredible piece of jewelry.

Typically, the colors in Obsidian only show in bright light. In low light, the stone looks like black glass. This Obsidian is of very good quality, thus the colors and pattern show more readily than most, but still can look black in low light conditions. It's kind of magical when the light makes the heart emerge from it's slumber out of the black volcanic glass. Wrapped in tarnish resistant Argentium Sterling Silver wire, the pendant measures 2.25" high and is 1" wide. Comes with a lovely 18 inch ribbon necklace with 2 inch extension in a charming gift box. A beautiful ancient Ammonite fossil from the Devonian Period is sliced and face polished and expertly framed in 14k gold-filled wire. This gem quality Ammolite is from Madagascar and shows some beautiful red iridescence in places. Ammonites are named after the Egyptian God Amon because the swirl shape resembled the horns of a ram, which he had. In Egyptian and Roman societies, these fossils were prized and thought to have special magical powers.
