OpheliasGypsyCaravan is taking a short break

Note from shop owner Dear friends,

In 2020, Ophelia's Gypsy Caravan celebrated its 10th anniversary! But alongside this big milestone came two others for me: the birth of my first child, and the publication of my first book (IGNITE THE SUN, available from HarperCollins wherever books are sold). In the last year, I have stepped back from mug painting in order to use my now-constricted work time to write, and have discovered that the change has been really good for my health and happiness, as writing has always been my first love and career goal.

I know this is disappointing for many people who have grown to love my mugs over the years (and I also earnestly miss this community!!), but I have decided to operate this shop on a more sporadic basis, whenever I find myself with a break in writing projects and a will to paint. This only happened once in 2021, but I think it is not unlikely it will happen again at least once per year moving forward.

If you wish to be alerted to any new mug developments, I would recommend doing one (or all) of three things:

1. Follow my OGC instagram or facebook accounts: @opheliasgypsycaravan

2. Follow my personal instagram account: @hannachoward

3. Ask Etsy to send you a notice when my shop reopens.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this little business over the past decade! I am grateful to each one of you, and I have loved painting your mugs.

Light and hope and love,
Hanna

How a starving writer keeps from starving...

Shop members

  • Hanna Hutchinson

Owner, Maker, Designer, Shipper, Message Answerer

I'm a reader, a writer, a gardener, and a geek, and my thirty+ years of life do nothing to diminish my status as a Crazy Old Bat. If I had spare time, I would use it to learn the art of beekeeping.

  • Ophelia Jane Shirley

    Namesake, Muse, Immortalized Mascot

The face and name of the business came from Ophelia the Dog, a catahoula leopard mutt Hanna adopted in 2011, and who died in January of 2020. She was the best (and weirdest) animal Hanna has ever known, and the shop reflects much of her quirky joy.

Brother, genius, and giver of innumerable talents wherever help is needed. (Also a rising star in the indie folk music universe. See thedukeofnorfolk.com)

  • Libby Keenan

    Guest Artist

Absurdly talented cousin who sometimes helps with the painting. Visit her shop: wispywhiskers.etsy.com

  • Jennifer Grant

    Tulsa, OK

Jennifer prints t-shirts out of the back of her small antique shop on Yale and 11th street, a few doors down from Tally's. I met her one day when I was out walking and stepped into her shop to browse--and wound up deciding I wanted to try printing shirts with her! She is great, and very helpful.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a mug that you've sold in the past?

All my pieces are scavenged from various stores, and I hand paint each one, so the short answer is 'no.' But if you'd like a reproduction of a past design on a different mug, I can absolutely do that. Please read my custom mug listings to see which one fits your needs: https://www.etsy.com/listing/109863641/simple-custom-mug-you-choose-the-quote?ref=shop_home_feat_2 ; https://www.etsy.com/listing/90199344/complex-custom-mug-you-choose-the-quote?ref=shop_home_active_5

What about larger pieces you've sold in the past? (Canisters and tea sets and the like?) Can you make more?

That all depends on what I can find locally. Like sold mugs, I can't often (if ever) reproduce an exact duplicate of a sold item, but sometimes I can find similar pieces to paint the same way. These sorts of custom projects usually take a long time, mostly because the actual finding of the pieces is a long and involved process, but if you're willing to wait a bit, please get in touch and we'll chat about options!

How big are the mugs you sell in your shop?

Usually, when I post a large collection of mugs, I do it all at once, and alert my Facebook followers and mailing list of their availability. Since time tends to be of the essence in those situations, I don't measure each cup's liquid volume, because that takes a lot of time. But if you'd like to know the size of any given mug, feel free to message me! In general, mugs I classify as "Small" tend to be 6-10 ounces, "Medium," 10-12 ounces, "Large," 14-16 ounces, and "Extra Large," 18 ounces and up.

Can I place a custom order?

Absolutely! I have many custom options in my shop, from simple, black-text only mugs, to intricate, complex artwork and mug specifications, to bowls and decorative platters. They can all be found in the MISCELLANY section of my shop. (Please read the descriptions on the listings before you place your order.)

How should I care for my mug? Hand wash? Are they dishwasher safe?

This question is one I still cannot satisfactorily answer, even after eight years of experience with these paints. The paint brand, Pebeo, claims that they are dishwasher safe, which is true in some respects. I have some mugs that I have been washing in the dishwasher for years, that are still mostly just fine. And yet, I think the dishwasher in question and the mug itself both impact how well the paint will stand up to that sort of washing. (In some cases, I think the detergent coats the paint over time, and even preserves it.)

On the other hand, I have seen mugs whose owners only hand-wash sustain significant damage from scrubbing. If you want to hand wash, take care to scrub ONLY the inside of the mug, and never the artwork itself.

Do you sell wholesale?

Unfortunately, my mugs are not really wholesale material. They take me so long to paint that I really must ask the full price I charge for them, and can't discount for the sake of wholesale.
