While I thoroughly enjoy ceramic works as fine art, they take on a whole new meaning when they function as something more than decoration. When you use a cup or bowl or plate on a daily basis it becomes much more than just something nice to look at; it becomes an integral part of your life. This is why the vast majority of my work is functional pottery. Yes, each piece is an individual work of art; but it is a work of art that someone will make a personal connection with each and every day.
My work (unless otherwise noted) is made from a mid range stone ware clay body that is decorated with the sgraffito technique. This involves covering each piece with a thin layer of colored clay slip, then carving through the colored slip to reveal the white clay body beneath. The work is then finished with a clear, food safe glaze and fired to cone 6 (2160 – 2260 degrees F) in an electric kiln.
All glazes are food safe. All work is safe for use in the oven (when applicable), microwave and dishwasher unless otherwise noted.
