Growing up as the daughter of a professional clothing designer and seamstress, sewing has always been a part of my life. When I was 5 years old, my parents and I lived out in the woods and I remember the day my mom said, “You need to learn to sew!” She helped me fashion a pillow out of her sewing scraps and we stuffed it with straw.
In third grade I earned my first money with small sewing projects, but my professional sewing career truly began when my mom encouraged me to make children’s clothing. I sold my first velvet, Navajo-style skirt at the age of 15. I started working more for my mom and received her velvet scraps as payment. I traveled with her and sold the petite versions of her clothing in her sale booths with great success. I truly felt like a “professional seamstress” when I designed and sold my first lace and burnout velvet princess dresses and children’s capes. My customers went wild, and my career in children’s clothing design was officially launched.
It wasn’t until I had my own children that I became truly passionate about designing children’s clothing. The birth of my first child, a lovely little girl, simultaneously birthed a strong desire in me to lavishly adorn her in celebration of the beauty that she was! I quickly realized the styles I envisioned for her weren't available in stores, so I put my sewing savvy to use creating the styles I wanted my daughter to wear. In turn, I was transformed from a somewhat indifferent professional into an enthusiastic artist, my “palette” being a combination of Pioneer, vintage, Prairie/Frontier with some Victorian trims and frills.
After twenty years of selling the majority of my clothing at the Oregon Country Fair, a good friend encouraged me to start a shop on Etsy. It took a whole year, but when she sat down and helped me set up my shop, I knew my business was going to a new level. I am pleased, surprised and blessed by my shop’s success! It gives me great satisfaction to be able to sell beautiful, durable clothing and bonnets to children worldwide.
Twenty-one years and seven children later, six of whom are girls, my passion for creating unique and beautiful children's clothing continues to grow! From bonnets to booties and everything in between, each piece is a joyful labor of love for a sweet little one. Through my journey, I have had the opportunity to clothe not only my own children, but those of friends and family and now yours. Each child I can touch with my gift is, in a tiny way, like my child... a "Starlite's Child". Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of you and your child’s life in this special way!
