Love is intangled here.
Loe! on my neck this twist I bind,
For to hang him that steales my mynde:
Unless hee hang alive in chaynes
I hang and dye in lingring paynes.
Theis threads enjoy a double grace,
Both by the gemme and by the place.
~William Strode, 17th-century English Poet
Williams Strode's poem celebrates both the intrinsic beauty of jewelry and the value leant to an item when it is worn by a loved one. My jewelry and artworks similarly bring together dual characteristics: hand-painted miniature artworks and the utility of jewelry, old techniques and new applications, images and narrative, belief and symbol, vintage and new.
During Victorian times, researchers and scientists attempted to examine whether personal items could absorb and transmit memories of former owners--they found that they could, leading to a wide-spread belief that just by touching an item, you could see the experiences and memories of previous owners. Today this belief has waned, however, whenever possible I incorporate vintage items into my work because I believe in green practices and reuse, as well as clinging to the Victorian fascination with objects with a past.
