Bird Houses at blackpotter's Shop
blackpotter's Shop Announcement
I am the Black Potter, maker of face jugs and functional pottery. Lots of folks are not familiar with face jugs. In this country they are a Southern tradition, although we black folk have our own spin on that. The ones I make are inspired by my heritage and by my several-times-great Aunt Evangeline, a slave potter in Jamaica who made face jugs.
The love of my life, Jan, takes care of our sites and the whole business end of things so I am free to be an artist. ("Everyone should be so blessed," she says!) We live and work in Pittsburgh, PA, where we have converted our brick two-car garage built in 1927 into a pottery studio. (Yes, I am blessed!)
I use a variety of clay bodies, sometimes mixing my own, make my own glazes from recipes I've collected and embellished over the years, and prefer to fire in a wood kiln. There's nothing like a wood fire for pots! It adds greatly to the value and appearance of the work.
We welcome your orders, questions, correspondence, and custom requests. More at www.blackpotter.com.
