My home is a healthy smoke-free environment. We do have a cat and a dog but they don't play with the fibers.

Any handdyed fiber has the possibility of bleeding, Especially dark or vibrant colors, Blues and Reds are the biggest culprits. To help prevent this you should soak you finished products in a slightly acid sock like room temp water with a half cup of white vinegar and wash with non-scented wool wash. All handdyed items that you wish to wash should be wash separately the first few times.
