Bothy Leather is a one-woman company.
I source the supplies, design, cut, dye and stitch. I take the photos, wrap the parcels and walk to the Post Office to send them to you.

I use leather sourced in the UK.
Some leather is Vegetable tanned which gives me a blank canvas for dyeing.

I also use Red Deer leather. In Scotland, Red Deer management done by individual estates and is overseen by Scottish Natural Heritage. For many years the hides were seen as being of low value. Wild deer roam the crags and loch-sides and the hides will show marks of that landscape. Stags fight, and are wounded, and the antler wounds leave scars. Marks, scuffs and variations in tone are normal and make each item unique.

Bookbinding leather is sourced from a Scottish company which has been in business since 1806 and which has been awarded the "By Royal Appointment" crest as leather suppliers to the Royal Household. The leather is tanned just five miles from my home.

Threads are carefully selected. I am a dyer and have been in business selling hand dyed knitting yarn and embroidery threads since 2006. I use both hand dyed linen thread and hand dyed silk to stitch the leather.

When I sew leather I do it by hand. This gives a stronger seam and a timeless finish. Occasionally I may use an 1897 treadle Singer Sewing machine to combine the leather with Harris Tweed in a book cover or purse. I suppose you might call this foot-driven!
