Bywa is a Celtic word from the Cornish language that means “to live”. We believe that it’s possible to live in a way that promotes beauty as well as sustainability for our world. Maybe if we learn to live creatively not only ourselves but the whole world will be able to live well.
A few years ago I heard a statistic stating that 99% of things purchased today will be in a landfill within 6 months. That’s crazy!!! I couldn’t just sit back and do nothing. I had to figure out in what little way I could change how I live. So I started creating things out of stuff that already existed. Out to the thrift stores I went.
Before long I discovered a passion for creating beautiful unique handbags that were made from things that others had discarded. And not just from the great old fabrics, leathers, and buttons I found but loads of other items that are often discarded or thrown away. I discovered that old electrical cords from things like Christmas lights could be used for piping. Remnants from laminate underlay flooring made great interfacing to create stability in a bag! It became so fun to see what I could save from the landfills and use to make something beautiful.
So, bywa was born. All our bags are made from reclaimed fabrics and leathers as well as many other little surprises gleaned along the way. What’s even better is that while helping to create a sustainable future we can show our own uniqueness by carrying a beautifully handcrafted bag that is the only one of its kind.
