Announcement    Welcome to the Catawampus Farm Shop! We specialize in Maine raised wool and mohair from small family farms, including our own! We raise colored and white angora goats, Jacob and Romney sheep. Our natural Maine fibers are available raw, washed, and carded for spinners and felters and we have our own Farm Fresh yarns in natural and hand dyed for knitters/crocheters/weavers, all locally spun. For avid sock and shawl knitters looking for a smooth commercial finish, we offer our ever popular Special Delivery MCN fingering and a merino/silk fingering in both kettle dyed and hand painted skeins. Check out some of our new jumbo fingering/sock skeins, with 600-750 yards for that shawl you've been wanting to start or the friend with big feet! I put them in their own section to make them easy to find.

Catawampus Farm is in central Maine, as you approach the western hills. We raise our own naturally colored angora goats and Jacob sheep. Our mohair and wool is available in soft yarn blends, roving, batts and locks. Our farm yarn and roving is processed at a local mills, using Maine-raised wool or recovered mill fibers for blending. We also carry carefully selected wool and alpaca from other small family farms in Maine, offering hand spinners premium "farm fresh" fibers. You can learn more about our animals and the farm on our website: www.catawampusfarm.com and on our "CatawampusFarmandFiber" Facebook page.

All spinning fleeces and fibers are chosen for clean, soft and spinnable fiber. We love getting to know other farmers in Maine, supporting small family farms and finding lovely fiber to share with other fiber addicts! Our fleeces are hand-picked for minimal vegetable matter (VM.) Coated fleeces are listed as such and will have minimal to no VM. Our own goats and sheep do live active, happy lives. If you find a little native Maine vegetable matter in our locks, we hope this will make you smile and picture our curly girls knee deep in clover.

Forget any old concepts you may have of itchy mohair. Fine mohair is so silky and soft! It gives yarn a lovely halo, sheen, softness and strength. When blended with wool, I think it makes a perfect yarn which is soft, light and warm. Spinning, knitting, weaving are all about fondling fiber, right? My own philosophy: "Life's too short for tiny needles and scratchy yarn!"
