Fork Pendants at doctorgus's Shop
doctorgus's Shop Announcement
Welcome to my shop online. I find that Etsy is very smooth and convenient for every transaction. Not that i'm automatically assuming you are going to purchase anything from me, nor am i going to actively try to force the purchase of my products, although i suppose that is really the whole point of this online interaction. I'm in the communications/advertising field and it would reflect badly on me if i failed to effectively present my creations in a desireable way. In any event, this Etsy shop of mine is full of stuff for sale. As such, since most of my pieces are one-of-a-kind, it has a limited selection at any one time. To view my other creations, previous work, and prototypes please check out my gallery on deviantART http://doctor-gus.deviantart.com/gallery/ .
I specialize in unique, one-off creations primarily in the jewelry design arena. I do make many other things, although it becomes difficult to ship some of the furniture and larger stuff i do. As such i only list a small amount of items on here. Plus it would get too thematically clouded on my Etsy if i were to be mixing all the applied arts i engage in. I get crazy at times, but i like to keep it simple as a general rule. That's why i enjoy working with old components in my endeavors. There was a time in the past when life was simpler, people owned fewer possessions, and they believed in a sense of craftsmanship. Through my work i try to deliver a type of post-modern primitive that has as its focus the inherent forms and aesthetic value of the components involved. In our hyper-comsumeristic culture the virtues of more and more and more are cherished above all else. Functionality is prime. Things must perform more than one task, preferably a half dozen dissimilar actions of reduced quality. My work is a rejection of this, as my pieces essentialy serve no purpose whatsoever. Save that of providing ecologically chic ornimentation. The components i use are almost exclusively reclaimed materials. They are relics of the past that in some cases were miniature works of art in themselves or simply utilitarian utensils. Whatever the case, through my transformations they are not thrown away, forgotten, or melted down. Rather, i give my pieces a chance to live a second life of luxury, to be admired for their lines and forms as opposed to purely the quality of it's desired operation. Sometimes i wonder who originally created a part i am using and what they might think at my callous disregard for it's proper application. And other times i actually hear people observing my works and commenting along the lines of, "why would anyone ever do that with a fork?" and it is all i can do to resist going into a ranting tirade at them concerning the failures of a complacent society mortgaging my future. I honestly get more satisfaction out of knowing that someone really enjoys something that i have made than any amount of money i could charge them.
It is interesting to think about all of the different individuals and places my raw materials have been and where they go after they leave me. Many of my forks and certainly most of the watches i take apart have been in existence for a hundred years. I am a firm believer in recycling and conservation. However, my view is that old items are always better than new, no matter how sustainable the manufacturing processes involved. I like to think that i am doing more good in the long run by personally recycling obejects. And in turn as i disburse my gains from it i can additionally help small businesses and causes i support.
Well, those are just my thoughts on the matter. I can tie myself philosophically into knots at times. But i hope you take a look around, and find something you like, even if it can't go home with you just yet...
