CHAPTER 2

It was half-past one and I was sitting in a dingy dive, waiting for her. It wasn’t the sort of place I’d normally meet a lady, but she was buying information… and I was selling.

Sometime after my third cigarette I realized she was late. Then I smelled perfume. The spendy stuff.

I turned around and there she was in her high heels and gloves. Her hat was low over her eyes.

“Well?” she said.

I slipped her a card.

“Fab Gabs Vintage” she read.

“Shhh. Yeah. Swell gal. She’s got all the dresses and shoes and lingerie a dame needs. Even has stuff for fellas like me. Buy you a drink?”

Too late. She was already walking out the door. I never a get a break.
