St. Gemma was an extremely holy little girl who only grew holier with each passing day. She received visions, the Stigmata in her hands and feet from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening that bled profusely, horrific temptations from the devil which included beatings when she was on her deathbed, and a miracle cure from spinal tuberculosis when she was 19. She also had regular conversations with her guardian angel.

Blessed with a boatload of physical suffering, she spent years in a torture device type back brace and was eventually miraculously cured of her ailment.

Somehow, many people, especially the clergy higher ups, didn't really believe her. Her canonization was fiercely contested.

She died at age 25 and was canonized a mere 37 years later in 1940. (Many saints have been on the waiting list for centuries.)

She is the patron saint of back pain and problems, druggists and pharmacists, of temptation and of people who are just not taken seriously.

You know the feeling. You want to get away from everyone and everything. You want to go hide in a cave. You want to crawl under a rock.

St. Rosalia did both. Turning to a holy life, she left her wealthy family, the Lord of Roses, and lived in a cave. Two caves really, because she moved once.

One day the cave fell on her and that was that.

But years later she appeared to a peasant in Palermo during a terrible plague, asking that the people there dig her up. It took them three days to dig her out and bring her into town, but when she arrived everyone was cured.

St. Theresa wanted to be a missionary and with any luck die a martyr's death but it didn't work out for her. She was too sickly to travel to some God forsaken (did we say that?) land. Theresa instead became a cloistered nun.

She was also too sickly to suffer for God the way most saints do by beating, starving and mutilating themselves so she found other ways to get the job done. Not batting away a fly, say, or forgoing blankets in winter and of course, silently and happily enduring the so very grating faults of others, made even more grating by being locked up behind walls with them. And you thought you had it bad at the office! She kept careful count of all of these miseries so she could offer them up for the Poor souls in Purgatory.

Although Theresa is officially the patron saint of flowers (she was known as 'the Little Flower"), air line pilots and France, we think she makes a good heavenly helper for all the put upon souls trapped here on earth with witless clods.

St. Hubert took heed, giving away all his earthly possessions and following the way of the Lord. He was especially good at showing up in a pagan
village and talking the heathens into melting down their idols and craven images. His non-violent means and colossal success earned him the patronage of metal workers and precision instrument makers.
