50MM RIM - Camera Lens Bracelet by ibwatson

This specimen has one thick side and the rest is a thin lightweight fin of metal that runs the length. With a green 50mm marking, the aperture numbers are distressed white from decades of use by a photographer. The edges are softened into a dull bare aluminum by hand.

All of my bracelets are hand-finished and most of the process is done with hand tools. Each one is completely unique, the inherent design of the aluminum ring speaking its design to me as I transform it from a functional machined component into a form-focused adornment.

With a single white tick line in the middle and matte black finish all around, this petite bracelet is simple and elegant. A roughly filed but softly finished top edge adds a little glimmer while still maintaing composure, and a single notch punctuates one side, offering just a wee bit of asymmetry. The inside is lined with thin threads where this piece once screwed into place.

BRASSKET FRACTURED - Camera Lens Bracelet by ibwatson

The brass is so rare in these camera lenses that it's always a treat to discover a full threaded ring when disassembling them. This thick brass piece is from the inside of a camera lens, with a solid ring and fine threads around the outside, and thicker threads along the inside. There are three holes where screws once held the piece into place.

The metal around the middle hole cracked during the shaping process, but don't let it fool you—the crack is purely aesthetic. The bracelet remains strong, heavier than its aluminum counterparts, and ready for wear. The metal itself is polished in spots, but the nooks and crannies retain a natural, oxidized finish that gives it a vintage look.

Pull the wool over your friends' eyes. This matte black bangle was once a built-in lens hood. It has a mirror-polished bevel on one edge, a shallow groove around the outside, and a felt strip with micro rings on the inside.

People that see the extra-small bracelets at craft shows always scoff and try to tell me that no one has a wrist that tiny. "Au contraire!" I tell them, there are plenty of anorexic emo hipster girls and super-petite women that are thrilled to death when they see them. "I NEVER find anything in my size!" they exclaim! So take that, average-wristed people!

Two narrow ridges around the top edge, a single, offset notch on the top and two sets of different size threads are all that goes into this elegant, industrial bracelet.

NUBBY DUBBY looks dainty, but she has bite. The single thumb grip in the middle used to control a simple movement, and has a shiny bare aluminum strip in the middle groove. A single hole offsets one side of the grip, and the lips add a nice bit of visual intrigue to the otherwise matte black bracelet.

It's the pint-sized ones that pack the most punch, so look out. This girl is ready to rock.

BRASS MONKEY II - Camera Lens Bracelet by ibwatson

"It's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey."

That was the punchline my high school calculus teacher used on a long, drawn-out and highly calculated story problem. And while the story problem has nothing to do with bracelet making, the punchline seemed apt. And that's right, this piece is brass.

"I've never seen a brass piece on a camera lens before."

Yeah, well chances are you've probably never taken a camera lens apart then. If you have, you'll know that there are usually several brass components in amongst all the lightweight aluminum and steel. Most of the brass parts are little levers or brackets, but occasionally there's a full ring and pieces like this are pretty rare.

Turns out brass is a lot harder than aluminum. Which probably explains why it's used for certain pieces, though the engineering of a camera lens is far beyond my comprehension. But isn't it beautiful?

Brass Monkey is polished beautifully on the outside and threaded on the inside. Brass has some spring to it, which makes this bracelet resilient and even more comfortable than its aluminum counterparts. There is a single screw hole in the middle, and the edges are polished right down into a smooth curve.

All of my bracelets are hand-finished and most of the process is done with hand tools. Each one is completely unique, the inherent design of the aluminum ring speaking its design to me as I transform it from a functional machined component into a form-focused adornment.

Approximate measurements: 2-1/2" L x 1-7/8" H x 3/16" W with an interior circumference of 6-3/4" and a 3/4" wrist opening. This would fit an average to larger woman's wrist or a slender man's wrist. Don't let the small wrist opening fool you, though. The brass is springy enough to fit around a thicker wrist.

Simple and silver pretty much sums it up. Three holes pierce the center of this polished bare aluminum bracelet. The surface is smooth and the metal is the same thickness from end to end. The inside face is smooth but duller and soft-looking. No numbers or markings on this piece, as it originated from the inside of a camera lens.

MACRO-ANGLE BANGLE - Camera Lens Bracelet by ibwatson

Let me see your macro! This is the perfect wide bangle for the macro photographer. The edges have been hand-smoothed and polished until they shimmer. The grip lets everyone know who's in charge, and the green and white focal distance numbers are offset by a run of neon red macro settings. The inside has two long grooves and a slight lip around the middle (but it's been smoothed down for ease of putting it on over your hand).
