Quilling is an ancient art. It is also called filigree. The first quillers were probably members of European religious orders about 500 years ago! Nuns and 'ladies' of that period were inspired by metal filigree, the art of shaping fine gold and silver wires into delicate designs using bird feather quills. Paper, being less expensive, was used to make elaborate artwork. Ladies made family coats-of-arms. They actually used books and tore the paper into strips. Nuns, being poor, used the gold edges of their Bibles to make quilled designs and embellish religious artifacts.
