Oh, hi! You made it! Great! Welcome to the Glass Garden bought to you by me. Little Bird Big Chip! It sure is nice to see your perty little face. Lean in close now...You know what... I’m going to let you in on a secret here, I’m not a very good gardener.
There, I said it. I like the idea of gardening, I love the thought of basking in the glory of a home made soup made from ones own spoils from the garden, whats that? A crisp lettuce leaf for your Caesar salad followed by a carrot the size of your arm? Forget it. Beautiful beetroot? Nope. Sweet Pea? Nope. Surely an eggplant? Not even close.
But you know what I can grow?
Succulents.
Succulents and Cactus.
Even some Bonsai.
These are my one constant. Luscious and plump green leaves some with a slightly waxy glow. Over exuberant flowers. Gorgeous and sturdy at the same time. Playful in their aesthetic and ever the easy going optimist. I love them. They make me smile.
Sure I may not cultivate these particular ones in the soil, but I do work in one very hot house. I wield a different type of secateurs and I use a different medium to sculpt and shape my plants, but like a true cactus or succulent they thrive in an arid, dry climate. They take on personalities of their own and form little families. Some personalities stronger than others. Some distinguished gentlemen slip in amongst them to bask in the afternoon sun.
So I may not be your conventional gardener but I am the glass gardner.
