how local wisdom cards started...
when i was little and i was asked what i wanted to be when i grew up, i don't think i said "i want to be an artist." Most likely, i said, mermaid. In college, i imagined i would be a curator for an art museum. i enrolled in every art history course offered. i was able to recite dates and movements effortlessly (this knowledge, long since lost). Later in my on again-off again affair with higher education, i imagined myself to someday be an adventure travel writer. Now years later, my art heroes are the local undiscovered ones and my travel writing has become bathtub reading. i chose to shelf my imagination for a paycheck. i would still be on the corporate highway if it wasn't for my son, Chris.
Several years ago, i started making collage cards and sending them to family and friends on New Year's Eve. Chris thought that these should be shared with people outside our small world. So when he was fourteen, he sold his electric guitar and gave me the money for the first printing. In 2001, we started Local Wisdom, a small Vermont greeting card company with six designs of my collage art. Now they are sold in over seven hundred shops and museums across the United States, Sweden and the Bahamas.
i may not have wanted to be an artist when i was little but life has a way of coming full circle. The materials i use, i used in kindergarten. The paste still advises me not to eat it and though the scissors are not rounded anymore i still probably should not run with them. i have abandoned the safe career path, to live the second half of my life in the hopeful unknown. Or maybe it's just that i like to go to work in my pajamas.
