More Metal Clay Information:
After years of working with polymer clay and painting, I discovered Precious Metal Clay (PMC) and haven't looked back. PMC is made from fine particles of silver (some of it is recycled) an organic binder and water to form a smooth clay. After forming, the item is fired in a kiln at 1650 degrees, the binder burns away completely and leaves nothing but the silver or gold. This silver is called fine silver (.999) The gold is 22 karat. (Sterling silver, by contrast, is only .925.)
Each piece is individually created by me, from my own artwork, from real leaves, a variety of textures, some vintage buttons and sea creatures. I love organic, flowing forms, abstract forms and I have even been inspired by architectural forms from antiquity and the incredible paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe and the work of Judy Chicago.
You can also find me at the Grand Lake Farmers' Market, Oakland voted BEST in East Bay! Thank you, East Bay Express! I have a booth at this market about once a month, check my schedule at www.lynncobbsilver.com on the events page.
!!!!!!***************HOT SILVER POLISHING TIP****************!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was explaining for the umpteenth time how to polish silver, simply and cheaply the other day at a craft fair....so, I thought I would tell all of you how I do it.
(by the way, my jewelry which is FINE silver .999 is extremely slow to tarnish. Sterling which is .925 does tarnish. Chains with my pendants are sterling, if kept wrapped and protected from the air, they will need less polishing)
I use a glass baking dish, 9x13 (size is not important, but glass or other NON-REACTIVE dish is important) line the dish with aluminum foil, add items to be polished, sprinkle with baking soda...maybe a quarter cup for this size dish...and then add boiling water to cover your items. Allow to rest in this solution for a few minutes and your items will be nice and sparkling silver. Rinse in fresh water a couple of times to be sure that bits of soda aren't lurking in corners. If you have really tarnished old flat ware you may need to repeat a couple times, start with new foil, new baking soda and new boiling water.
One real advantage of fine silver is that it tarnishes extremely slowly, but sometimes I leave a piece out on my dresser for a few months and it gets a bit dull or the sterling chain needs some polishing, this method works wonders and is quick, easy and cheap. You can find variations on this method by googling. This method WILL remove patina, so if you have a patinated or "antiqued" piece of silver and want to keep it that way, DO NOT use this method, get out the silver polish and a cloth and do it the old fashioned way, just polishing the shiny raised portions, leaving the patina in the recessed areas.
I was recently interviewed about my new Etsy shop by the editors of the PMC Guild Fusion magazine. If you are a member of the guild, check it out.
******PHOTOGRAPHY***********
My next challenge is to do more of my own photographs of my many many earrings and simpler pendants to post.
The pro photos you see here were taken for jury submissions by my professional photographer: George Post. He is awesome. Check him out if you are planning to apply for publications or high end fairs, his photos of your work will help you successfully apply! www.gpostphoto.com
I have also just reconnected with an old friend, Gail Sands, who is also a professional photographer. She has shot a few items for me and they too are awesome. You can find her at picagraphics.com
