:::::::ABOUT US:::::::
Mexchic is a collaboration of a small group of talented artisans who work in a variety of techniques working with traditional methods. Mexchic collectively designs and hand makes each and every item we sell. We only offer products of the highest quality and using only natural materials from Mexico. We painstakingly design and hand make each and every item. Please read below to find out more about the Mexchic artisans and their roles.
Mexchic is:
Guillermina Santa Ana comes from a long line of talented pedal loom weavers from the tiny Mexican state of Tlaxcala. Her work has been published in numerous books on Mexican textiles and currently she has work traveling the globe in an exhibition of textiles. In 1994 she was honored the distinction of making the most beautiful and intricate textile of the year by the Mexican federal government. We are excited Gullermina and her beautiful work are part of Mexchic as her designs and techniques are very representative of the traditions of her region of Mexico. In addition to rugs (we will be selling these shortly, of hand dyed wool using natural dyes from animals, seeds, wood etc.) she weaves blankets out of wool and cotton. She makes everything on two distinct types of pedal looms, one of which belonged to her grandmother. (check our FB page to see a n amazing video of her working the loom)
Esteban 'El Pez' Sanchez is a wood carver, he makes the 'Mano de Santo' hand and the 'Totem' sling shots (we will be putting these up this week, stunning work!). Esteban carves everything with a tiny little pocket knife he's always got with him and has carved with that knife, a variety of work including a huge life size bull! He's an excellent wood worker, and makes very traditional styled work so it's been interesting mixing a modern perspective into his designs. He resides in Malinalco Mexico and competes yearly in a contest sponsored by the 'Casa de Cultura' in Malinalco for wood sculptures (this region of Mexico is know primarily for the wood carvers) and he has won numerous times.
Berna Sanchez is Esteban's (above) brother. He knows how to carve wood but prefers to make beautiful jewelry and works mixing a variety of traditional techniques, including materials such as leather, wood, metals and horsehair. For Mexchic he makes the braided horsehair bracelets with hand-made sterling silver clasps. He's one of the youngest artists in the mix, early 30's, and so is really open to experimenting and playing with different materials and ideas. We're currently working on an extra large woven horsehair bracelet and necklace something lady gaga would love. Horsehair is a common material used to weave braids into decorative bands for cowboy hats.
Herminillo Sanchez is Berna’s and Esteban’s (above) cousin. Literally their whole family knows how to sculpt wood into magnificent surreal objects. But each of their styles is very distinct. Herminillo is the artisan who makes these fantastic hearts. He makes them in many sizes, anywhere from 3 cm small to 3 ft huge! He carves them out of the insanely fragrant cedar wood and only from fallen trees (as do all of the Mexchic artisans). Mexico is actually very vigilant about the illegal practice of tearing down trees without the proper permits so you can be assured when you purchase a wood product from Mexchic that it is 100% eco friendly and legal.
Trinidad Rojel Soltelo is a master wood carver who hails from a small town with beautiful semi-tropical weather called Tonatico. He creates the lovely deer bowl sets, and also makes spice bowls, chocolate molinillos, and the scissor tongs which are only available for now on our wholesale (contact us for more info). His creations specifically accommodate the kitchen, huge cutting boards out of solid chunks of Fresno (they weigh a ton!) rolling pins, ladles, plates, knifes and anything else you might imagine needing in the kitchen. Woods he typically uses are Fresno, Copal and Corazon de Guaje. His HUGE hands are worth a thousand words, engraved with burns, lines, cuts and age, he’s been woodworking for more than 60 years.
Enrique “El Profe” Juarez was the very first artisan to become a part of Mexchic and he has been making wool sweaters for more than 40 years. A total character (as are all the artisanos in Mexchic!) his nickname is ‘El Profe’ meaning ‘the teacher’, as he’s known in town, because he is a master of what he does, which is weaving the warmest best quality wool sweaters. A master knitter, he and his wife Linda, knit the sweaters on an instrument called a 'bastidor' which looks like a plank of wood with rows of nails across, then they weave the wool on them. The wool used is 100 %virgin undyed hand loomed wool where other local families raise sheep, clean and spin the wool for purchase by sweater making families like Enrique’s. There are very few artisans left making this type of work (remember marilyn monroe and starsky and hutch in the 50’s and 70’s reviving the look) so we hope to do the same by brining this look back into demand and by that, helping these artisans who make them.
Gabriel Vargas is the master leather craftsman who makes the hand-woven blanket straps. When we started working with Guillermina making the blankets, we thought that a nice hand woven leather strap would compliment it perfectly. Gabriel is young and cool, he even has his own store in Toluca where he lives where he sells his amazing line of hand crafted leather jewelry, medicinal shaman pouches, belts, our leather straps, hand bags, and anything else you might want in hand woven leather. We’re going to start working with him to make some insanely hot leather bags soon. He’s really busy with his wife, little girl and his shop, but hopefully we’ll get these made soon!
Christina Hattler created Mexchic with her husband Tomas Macedo who has a Masters in Intercultural Human Rights and working on PHD in Anthropology in 2009 for the purpose of assisting Mexican artisans who work in traditional methods but are not able to sell their goods in a more international forum and allow for more exposure of their work. Mexchic was also created to allow these artisans to be able to support themselves making their art. Christina is always searching out new artisans to compliment the group's varied talents and she also takes part in the creation process of each object using her talents of 15 years + in hand-made design work (www.christinahattler.com to see her personal work) in the designs the collective creates and she also makes pillows and handbags out of antique Huipiles and textiles (will be available here shortly, we’ve sold out!). She is also an accomplished fashion designer in her own right and worked at Conde Nast's House & Garden magazine in New York. She resides in Malinalco Mexico with her husband Tomas.
