THE HEART:
If there is one thing I have learned through this process, I would say that it takes courage to create - to willingly expose your art and subject your ever-evolving sense of style for the world to see. I have to admit, it's hard for me to look back on the signs I made four years ago! I am critical of my beginning stages, but they needed to happen to bring me to the stage of art I'm in now and I'm thankful for it. I keep telling myself you have to start where you are. Bring what you have to the shop each day. Keep showing up and do what brings you joy. It's worth it. I love creating custom signs for people. It's a gift I have to share and i'll keep choosing it until my hand cramp doesn't go away.
THE STORY:
In Summer 2012, I interned at Young Life's Washington Family Ranch. On my day off, I decided to drive up to the camp dump (who knows why?!) and scope it out. I found some super solid pieces of lumber that were just lying there ready to be burned, but I saw that they had purpose. Side note: I had been on Pinterest that morning which makes everyone think that twigs from the sidewalk and mason jars combined will make all sorts of DIY magic. I swear their marketing is brilliant. Anyway, I grabbed the wood, took it to the camp shop and painted some lovely words on it.
After that summer, I spent the remaining two years at Whitworth making wood signs from my garage floor. Correct - no work table - I just painted and nailed the wood together on the garage floor. I was a classy college student with a lower back that became very sore.
After many orders and improvement in my hand lettering and design skill, I have finally opened up a shop and started a blog. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks to all who have supported me!
