►Jewelry Care and Handling
- 14K Gold Filled : Gold fill is created by bonding a thin layer of gold to a thicker core of brass, which itself is an alloy of copper and zinc. Typically, 14K gold (14 karats, the standard for jewelry) is used for the thin layer of gold.
- Vermeil : Pronounced as ver-mey, it is sterling silver that has been gold-plated.
- Care and Handling : 14K gold filled and vermeil products will eventually lose its shine and color by frequent wear and poor handling. The biggest factor to metal tarnishing is the moist, including sweats and water, as well as chlorine from swimming pool, alcohol from perfume, chemical from hair spray and etc. Excess contact with pollution and perspiration are also the contributing factors.
To keep your jewelries longer lasting, storing them clean and dry in an air-tight sealed bag is highly recommended. Avoiding excessive contact and humidity is also advised.
- Sterling Silver Care and Handling : All silver products will tarnish and oxidize. Like 14k gold filled and vermeil, sterling silver metal is sensitive towards moist and sulfur. Washing silver products with mild soap in warm water is one way to care. Silver polishing cloth and liquid are also available at specialty stores and drug stores. At home, you can try washing your silver jewelries with toothpaste that contains baking soda as a quick remedy which may help brighten up the product.
