I have a long history of twisting things... spinning, knitting, kumihimo braiding, wire; but recently a very good friend got me hooked on braiding leather, specifically kangaroo leather. That's what good friends are for, right? We have a long history, 20+ years, of getting together and sharing our love of arts and crafts. We both have that "creative gene". Either blessed (or cursed) with the need to constantly have creative projects to work on. This curse, or blessing as it may be, doesn't make you wealthy; but it does give you a wealth of pleasure.

Back in the old west, cowboys often had to make and repair their own tack. They split hides into strings with an ordinary knife, and then braided them into reins, bridles, etc. The beauty of these pieces only improved with age. Today, although we have better tools, we use basically the same techniques to make 'tack' or accessories for people and pets.

The Kangaroo hides used here are purchased from Australia's Government-licensed roo culling program. Only species subject to habitat-threatening overpopulation are used in this program. Ounce to ounce, kangaroo is the strongest leather in the world.
