If I am not the only gourd artist you've met, then I hope I am the most kick ass.
I grow the gourds (unless I run out, then I order from a gourd farm. Yes, there are actually gourd farmers), cure them for 6 months to a year, and then create quirky, sweet, and sometimes poignant sculptures out of them. I usually create animals or mermaids, but all have wings, a stylized halo, a hot outfit, and are "saying something."
I varnish the bejesus out of them, then they can be made to hang, or can be mounted on a pole or tomato cage so that they can go in a garden and even have some climbing plant grown up them.
I usually custom make them, but am in the process of making 5 for general sale. If you like the sample pics I have here, then shoot me an e-mail and we can discuss specifications and price.
Oh, and they are reasonably large. I would say that the sizes of the sculptures range from 1 foot to 2 feet. When I mount them onto poles, I use a 5 foot dowel, pvc pipe, bamboo stick, or any other pole-like material I can find.
