Tatting is a form of lacemaking dating back to the early 19th century. Tatting is often called a "lost craft", let me tell you, it is FAR from being lost! There are three main ways to tat- needle, shuttle, and cro. Needle tatting uses a long needle whose eye is not larger than the width of the needle. Shuttle tatting uses, well, a shuttle. Finally, cro-tatting uses a crochet hook.
I learned how to needle tat first but also have learned how to shuttle tat. Many of my pieces are a combination of needle and shuttle tatting. Any one piece in my store could take me one hour to six hours of work to complete.
Tatting can be small and very portable, or very large. That is up to the artist. That's what tatters are. Only an artist could tie knots over and over and form unique jewelry, doilies, and other beauties.
