How to wash your wool diaper wraps and longies

It is not necessary to wash your wool cover or longies after every use. Rinse the wool item in cold water to remove any urine or feces. Fill a sink with warm water, and add a little wool wash (Eucalan No Rinse Woolwash is recommended) Use the amount recommended on the bottle. Soak your covers in the wool wash water mixture for about 30 minutes. Do not agitate it in there. Just let it soak. When time is up, gently squeeze out the excess water, supporting all aspects of the wool item in your hands (don’t let anything dangle). Lay the covers on a flat bath towel and roll them up, pushing down a bit to help get the extra water out. To dry you may lay them on another dry towel, or line dry them. I have laid my covers over the side of a laundry basket without any distortion in the cover being noted. Though some WAHMs and companies recommend washing your wool in the washing machine, MommaH’s does not. (I’m just too afraid of ruining one of these valuable items!)

How to lanolize your wool covers and longies

MommaH’s covers and longies have been lanolized once and are ready for immediate use, however you may wish to lanolize them 2-3 times prior to use. MommaH’s recommends lanolizing your wool baby items at least every 2 months. If there is poop on the cover, but you don’t want to wash the entire cover, you can spot clean it using an olive oil bar soap, or Ivory soap.

1. Fill your sink, or a wash basin about ½ way full of warm water.
2. Place your soaker/cover/longies inside out in the warm water, immerse it under the water and ensure it is fully wet.
3. Place about ½ cup of water with 1 tsp lanolin in the microwave for 2 minutes – this will melt the lanolin, making it easier to work with.
4. Stir the lanolin and hot water until it is dissolved.
5. Add about 1 tablespoon of baby shampoo or wool wash to the water and lanolin mixture – this mixture will turn a milky white color.
6. Slowly pour this mixture into the wash basin which holds your wool item.
7. Gently stir, but DO NOT agitate the wool item (this may cause felting).
8. How long you leave the wool item in the lanolin mixture varies. Generally, a 15-30 minute soak is appropriate. You may choose to turn your wool item over once during the soak, to help ensure even coverage with lanolin. Check on your wool item every few minutes. If you notice the color is bleeding, you may want to shorten the soak time.
9. Drain the water.
10. You may at this point, place your wool item in the washer on the spin cycle to help remove some of the excess water (this will greatly reduce drying time). Another option which Momma H uses is to lay a bath towel folded in half on the counter, take the wool item out of the lanolin water, gently fold it in half and half again, removing some of the water. Lay the wool item flat on the dry towel and roll the towel up onto the wool item, pressing down firmly to help remove water.
11. Lay your wool item flat on a drying screen or dry towel to air dry. You may place a gentle fan on the item if you wish to. Some prefer to hang the wool out in the sun. DO NOT PLACE WOOL IN THE DRYER – this will result in felting, thus shrinking your wool item. Be sure to shape your wool cover to the proper shape as this is the shape it will be once it dries. It will take at least 12 hours for your wool item to fully dry, depending upon conditions.

How to care for your Fitted Flannel Diapers and PUL covers

Note: All fabrics used in the construcition of MommaH’s fitted flannel diapers have been washed in HOT water and machine dried to help prevent further shrinkage. No chemicals have been added.

Washing Instructions: You will eventually establish your own diaper washing routine. Some ladies prefer to rinse once, then send the diapers through a wash cycle. Some prefer to simply put the diapers through the wash cycle. Since these fitted diapers are made of 100% cotton flannel, you may use bleach if you choose to. Be aware that bleach can lessen the life of your items by causing wear and tear on fabrics and elastic, and may cause fading of colors. If you choose to wash in bleach, Momma H recommends that you fill the washer with hot water and ¼ cup of bleach. Once the bleach and hot water have had a chance to mix (the washer is full), add you diapers. DO NOT bleach your PUL (Polyurethane laminate) covers – this will eventually ruin the PUL and the FOE around the edges. An option available instead of bleach is to use vinegar in the rinse cycle….using vinegar will help kill some bacteria and will also make your diapers softer.

Drying: Dry your diapers in the dryer on the setting you choose. You may also line dry them. Line drying will allow the sun to naturally whiten your covers and help remove stains. The sun may cause fading of certain colors. Drying your PUL covers in the dryer will not harm them.

DO NOT: Use Borax or Bleach on your PUL covers
DO NOT: Use any fabric softener or fabric sheets – these will put a coating on your diapers which will yield in less absorbtion.
DO NOT: Use ‘normal’ laundry detergent on your diaper items. Many of these contain oils and fabric softeners in them.
DO NOT: Wipe off a PUL cover and reuse it on baby…although this may seem practical, it is unsanitary. Feel free to rinse the cover in warm water (if only pee has been on it) and allow it to dry between uses.

Dealing with the nasty stuff (Poop): Using a diaper sprayer is not necessary and can sometimes be an added cost to cloth diapering. If you have a diaper sprayer, use that to spray the poop off your diaper. If you do not have one, and your baby is on solid food, you will need to rinse your cloth diaper to remove the poop. Doing this while the toilet is flushing helps to rinse the poop off, just be carefull not to clog the drain with the diaper or to accidently let loose of your diaper! Breastfed poops require no rinsing. Simply place those diapers in your diaper bucket.

Keep a diaper pail/bucket: A 3 gallon bucket, or small tote container placed on top of the dryer is perfect for keeping your dirty diapers in. you may choose to use a dry pail or a wet pail (one with water in it). MommaH personally chooses a dry pail, adds her dirty diapers to it, and washes at least every other day. Placing a lid on your diaper pail will contribute to the growth of bacteria and buildup of ammonia odor. MommaH has never noticed an odor from her diapers since switching to a dry pail. If odors become a problem, sprinkle a little baking soda on top of the diapers every time you add one to the bucket. When wash time comes, rinse your bucket with warm water, you may spray the bucket with a diluted bleach spray if you wish, just be sure the bleach has dried before adding any PUL covers to it.

Out and about: When out on the town, you can utilize a wetbag to place your dirty diapers in. A wetbag is generally made out of PUL with a zipper on it. To wash it, turn it inside out and wash with your diapers. If you are not opposed to plastic, a plastic grocery bag will work just as well at containing dirty diapers.
