consciousboutique's Shop Policies
Welcome
I like to make stuff.
Check out boozhoundlabs.com for a select history of the stuff I have made. In the last few years I become frustrated by the cost of making the audio components that I really love. It takes a substantial investement in parts to be able to try something new. As a result, I haven't been making things as much as I would like to.
I'm also really into being green and learning about how what we do impacts the planet. Combining this with my love for designing and making things turned into a challenge to come up with ideas for ways to create products made from materials that would otherwise be thrown away.
You know how they talk about "eating low on the food chain"? When you purchase something from Conscious Boutique, you will be "shopping late in the lifecycle" - meaning that the majority of the materials in use will be closer to being thrown away than to being brand new.
I hope you enjoy browing this shop as much as I have enjoyed designing and making the things in it.

Additional Policies and FAQs
Here is the deal with using recycled vinyl from billboards.
It is cheaper and more versatile for advertisers to print a design on a big vinyl tarp and stretch that tarpover a billboard frame than to paint of paper a billboard like they did in the old days. Sadly this new process is very bad for the environment. I would feel terrible buying this stuff brand new, but the material itself is quite neat.
The vinyl fabric is super heavy 16oz vinyl with a polyester weave inside that makes it very durable and waterproof.
The bags are sewn using nylon binding tape on all seams for extra durability. The strap is made of second hand seatbelt webbing. I buy the webbing as ends and scraps, so it's not technically upcycled, but it is "late in the lifecycle" anyway.
Because the material for each bag is cut from a different part of a billboard, and I haven't yet gotten 2 of the same billboard, the pattern on every bag is totally unique.
These bags are all unlined and can be easily washed. I recommend hand washing with light dish soap if needed.
PVC Vinyl like this is not easily recycled into new usable materials, and it's production creates hazardous chemicals including Dioxin. Brand new Vinyl outgasses harmful chemicals, but this Vinyl has been outdoors for months, so it is stable. Using second hand Vinyl instead of new Vinyl avoids the downsides to this material, and keeps it out of landfills.
