Etsy's Handmade Blog
About Us: Jesse a.k.a. eetzee

Jesse Hertzberg, a.k.a. eetzee a.k.a. Gonzo, is the Business Development Team at Etsy right now. This means he gets to talk on the phone a lot and make deals. A New York City native son, Jesse brings his enthusiasm and sportsmanship to Etsy's Brooklyn office. He's always got something up his sleeve and knows how to "make it happen."

Fun Facts:

  • Jesse was a one-time professional soccer player. Christina notes that he's been gearing up for the World Cup in South Africa for forever. He sometimes wears soccer cleats to the office.
  • He sold Matt and Anda hook, line and sinker on those MBTs fat shoes.
  • When Anda made him his avatar photo, she emailed it to the wrong address and got a message back from a random girl who wrote, "I think you meant to send this to someone else, but thanks for the hot guy in my inbox."
  • Neelam says on the outside, he's a hardcore negotiator, but he'll agree to anything for some cupcakes.
  • He's the one who wrote Pete's name in bubble letters with a heart around it on the chalkboard next to Pete's office.
  • Liz reminded us that Jesse forgot to get his wife a birthday present, so he baked her some cookies.
  • Matt claims that Jesse was a theater geek in high school and in college. Matt says he almost got the part of Wayne in The Wonder Years. He does great impressions, especially Ronald Reagan and Crocodile Dundee.
  • Anda once saw him get kicked out of a bar.
  • He was allergic to the sun until he was nine.
  • Colin from Men at Work sang at his bar mitzvah.
  • His favorite TV shows are Airwolf and 21 Jump Street. Matt says Jesse tried unsuccessfully to make Airwolf his nickname.
  • His intense crush on Olivia Wilde during the Handmade Moment contest made everyone slightly uncomfortable.
  • Vanessa suspects that he gets really nervous public speaking even though he claims not to be.
  • Anda points out that Jesse is in meetings more than any other Admin in the history of Etsy. "If you look at his calendar every day, there will be like a 15 minute open space, during which I think he hangs out over next to Matt trying to get him to go 'shoot hoops' after work with him or something."
  • His three-year-old daughter Lila is absolutely adorable. Adam thinks those pipe cleaner flowers on his desk were made by her.
  • Whenever we get a random business coldcaller or email, we send it to Jesse.
  • Jesse grew up above a pizzeria in Manhattan.
  • Adam notes that Jesse looooves his labcoat. He sported a bowtie for the Handmade Moment Contest judging.
  • Matt says he has an idea for a TV show about "an adult Punky Brewster type who works at an Internet start-up."
  • Christina says that if Jesse were a Simpsons character, he'd be Mr. Bergstrom, Lisa's substitute teacher on whom she had a crush.
  • Neelam recalls the time Jesse stepped in Dottie's poop and dirtied his converse sneakers.
  • Neelam says he thought he was so cool by turning his big computer monitor vertical and thought everyone would do the same thing but none of us did.
  • Jakob and Jesse know each other from plays. They're really tight.
  • Jesse likes to give hugs.
  • He has some embarrassing Bowie story about Suffragette City, but I couldn't follow what he was talking about.
  • As Vanessa was compiling these Fun Facts, Jesse came around and gave everyone homebaked cookies as thank yous for helping him with the Handmade Moment Contest. And then she felt really bad.

It's so weird to see crazy long-haired Jesse! These days, this guy has to get a haircut every other week.

Tiny little old man Jesse puts on his game face. Adorable!

Etsy has had quite a growth spurt, and we have the awkward pictures to prove it. We've been posting a series of About Us pieces to help you get to know the Etsy Admin (and for us to get to know each other). You've seen the admin badge, and maybe you're a bit curious about the person behind it! For more on Etsy's mission and about the company, please see our About page (the link is in the little blue footer of every Etsy page).

Some of Jesse's favorites below. Yes, he's a cuff links man...

Oh, Dusty. In-famous is when you're MORE than famous. This man El Guapo, he's not just famous, he's IN-famous.

Oct. 16, 2009 at 2:19 p.m. PrimaryRedux

aaah a colorful Brooklyn garden and grilled pizza-lovely! after mastering pizza in the oven-electric oven no less! the grilled pizza is my goal now. I'm considering heating the pizza stone up on the grill and going that way. a big cast iron pan should work to. Wonder how jesse will figure it out.

Oct. 16, 2009 at 2:20 p.m. TheJoyofColor

This is fun to read and so nice to know a little bit more about the man behing the title, have a great weekend

Oct. 16, 2009 at 2:21 p.m. eetzee

i actually do it right on the grill, no stone or cast iron. it works great. the light char lines add great flavor and the heat makes it melty. transfering the dough to the grill is the challenge.

Oct. 16, 2009 at 2:22 p.m. seababejewelry

Aloha Jesse! Notorious may be the word you are searching for! ;) It's very nice to meet you. Now I want to make a couch fort!

Oct. 16, 2009 at 2:28 p.m. PrimaryRedux

good to know-thanks. Yes I do love the char flavor on grilled food and bread. ok one more question-do you actually transfer it with all toppings? pizza paddle or hand transfer? ok was that 3 questions? 4 now

Oct. 16, 2009 at 3:16 p.m. SewnNatural

i love that you wrote "football" the round ball kind... instead of soccer. we're teaching our daughter Spanish and she says that too, and no one knows she means futbol, not futbol americano. she's going to have to learn to say "the round ball" kind. :)

Oct. 16, 2009 at 3:25 p.m. OddBirds

Nothing's funnier to me than a failed attempt at a nickname.

Oct. 16, 2009 at 3:48 p.m. bddesigns

Yay for cufflinks! :) You sound like a fun guy to be around, Jesse! We're glad you found Etsy after your world tour! :)

Oct. 16, 2009 at 4:04 p.m. eetzee

I transfer the pizza with the toppings. you need a very well floured paddle or wood board. the grill is too hot to top the dough after the fact, plus the dough gets too poofy quickly without the sauce et. al. to weight it down and moisten it. usually the transfer is a "stretch job" and i end up with these oval pizzas. i cook 'em about 3 at a time using 1/4-1/3 of the dough of a whole pie (buying the raw dough at the local brooklyn pizzeria saves a ton of time and mess). lastly, i keep the grill at about 450-500 and this all cooks really fast but gets nice and crispy.

Oct. 16, 2009 at 4:10 p.m. puolukka

Hello there! Wild hair :)

Oct. 16, 2009 at 4:18 p.m. melaniaelisa

I haven't been brave enough to try the grilled pizza yet - apart from the tricky factor, my italian-pizza-chef neighbour may love it...or may scream at me for not doing it in a wood-fired oven. I was inspired by a recipe/write up on 101cookbooks.com though, might provide the details some people are looking for?

Oct. 16, 2009 at 4:19 p.m. CLineCreations

Oh man that grilled pizza sounds awesome, Jesse. I will have to try that one out. Once I get a grill. I don't think it will fit in(outside) my Brooklyn(!) apartment though...

Oct. 17, 2009 at 3:16 a.m. shellsherree

I applaud a man who's unafraid to dot his i's with hearts, knows how to braise a pork shoulder, and browses for thoughtful gifts for his wife. And I'll take a rough guess that Jesse took standing in Dottie-poo in his stride. I like you a lot, Jesse!

Oct. 17, 2009 at 5:03 a.m. konkokto
