Handmade Weddings Party Duel: Arctic Luxury

Which wedding is better — an affordable and casual affair in the sticks or an Arctic diva fantasy where money is no object? You decide! Vote in the comments below!

I'm not one of those girls that grew up mythologizing every aspect of my wedding. In fact, I hadn't even really thought about it until just recently! However, once the idea came to me, I knew it was a winner. Thus, my fantasy wedding came into my mind: a winter affair (I hate sweating!) in a paradise of crisp weather, Sweden.  This wedding has no discernible price tag: I'm pulling out all the stops! Just try and stop me, mom!

The wedding would take place at the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden.

This unique hotel (and church!) is constructed completely of ice — a modern igloo, if you will. Tres chic! And completely worth the price.

It's luxurious and pretty darn cold, so I'll need a dress with some longer sleeves. This 40's style dress by joanshum is just my style.

...Plus a fur coat by mailonfurs to keep me warm. Also, I'm a bit of a bling lover, so maybe no conventional ring: just a huge bangle by rcjewelers. (I'll be wearing gloves, so this will fit over them quite nicely.)

Some sexy mukluks by will keep my feet toasty.

My man will wear only the finest in shirts. White, of course — also, a fur coat.

Only the best cufflinks for my honey!

We will also buy a polar bear to act as our "ring bear." He'll carry the bling down the aisle in style. (Inquire at your nearest polar bear dealer for prices.) Also, a narwhal bringing the ring on its tusk could also be a creative addition. (Thanks, BornPaz!)

Post-ceremony, we'll grab our venison and many bottles of champagne and adjourn to watch the Northern Lights. We'll also bring buckets of diamonds to throw on the ground so we can make snow angels. So romantic and epic! Also, Sigur Ros or Bjork will be playing, because they're trippy and from a cold climate.

When the night finally comes to an end and we adjourn to the hotel, our suite awaits. Not bad, eh?

Which wedding would you rather attend? Leave it in the comments! Luxury or on the cheap? It lies in your hands!

nothin' says lovin' like a polar bear, so you win my vote, ms. alison.

April 3, 2008 at 4:37 p.m. mermaidclaire

I'm a Gemini, I can't pick one! If you can get Bjork and the Hives to play your reception I'm in!

April 3, 2008 at 4:43 p.m. BornPaz

I'm not sold on the polar bear idea. A narwhal on the other hand... You could put the ring on his horn! I'm going to have to vote for the cheaper wedding. Without a narwhal your plan is lacking.

April 3, 2008 at 4:44 p.m. TeenAngster

Ah! I'll add the narwhat! GENIUS.

April 3, 2008 at 4:45 p.m. fadingflowers

I'll vote for Arctic diva fantasy where money is no object.

April 3, 2008 at 4:57 p.m. missbatch

Since I'm already married and this is pure fantasy, I'm loving the icy wonderland wedding! I'd skip the furs and don some crazy white fluffy knits. Throw in thermal hot springs and 24 hours of sun and the vision is complete.

April 3, 2008 at 5:09 p.m. ArgyleWhale

This is pretty close to my dream wedding too. There is no reason you can't have a polar bear AND a narwhal... Just make sure the bear has had plenty to eat before the ceremony.

Perhaps you'd enjoy having the groom enter on a reindeer and your "just married" getaway vehicle could be a dog sled team or a jackalope team if we can go wild.

be prepared for the avalanche set against the northern lights that the concert will undoubtedly cause.

This wedding gets my vote big time! Though Vanessa's wedding sounds like a delight too.

April 3, 2008 at 5:09 p.m. BeckyKayDesigns

mmmm... I vote for this one! Very classy!

April 3, 2008 at 5:14 p.m. eclipse

The bride should enter riding the polar bear. Or in a dogsled pulled by samoyeds.

April 3, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. BirdNerd

I vote for this one! I think Flocke the polar bear should be the flower girl.

Wow...love the combo of ice, snow, fur, and the polor bear. I vote this one!

April 3, 2008 at 6:36 p.m. StacyRaeT

The ice igloo is amazing. Love the items featured.

April 3, 2008 at 6:39 p.m. sofiamasri

I really wish I was the kind of girl who'd be happy with a simple affair- it would make life so much easier!

But, I'm not. I like pomp and elegance, so despite my aversion to cold, this one gets my vote!

April 3, 2008 at 6:42 p.m. StacyRaeT

Admin, not sure if i missed it, but don't forget an article on the Flower girls and Ring Bearers. There are some cute ideas for them. Dresses, childrens jewelry, ring pillows, boys ties. Even ideas for the Dog ring bearers.

April 3, 2008 at 6:49 p.m. katinkapinka

it's all lovely, but i say, "tsk tsk" to the fur coat. handmade or not, fur is cruel. unless it's vintage or roadkill, i don't consider it nice at all.

April 3, 2008 at 6:51 p.m. moschell

nice. :)

April 3, 2008 at 6:52 p.m. pinupchick

I agree about featuring the fur coat. Inappropriate, and it basically goes in opposition to the morals and values being perpetuated through the handmade movement.

What were you thinking, admin?

April 3, 2008 at 6:52 p.m. moschell

but i dont like the fur either katinkapinka.

April 3, 2008 at 6:52 p.m. MetalheartDesign

dear etsy,
i'm really sad and disappointed that you chose to highlight fur items. i know you can do whatever you want, just wanted to let you know i think it makes etsy look really bad to anyone who sees the front page right now or reads this article.

April 3, 2008 at 6:56 p.m. vivametal

Amen to the above fur comments. I'm disappointed by the choice of Etsy/Storque promoting the use of real fur.

April 3, 2008 at 6:56 p.m. basilthecat

Fur on the front page...a controversially poor choice!

April 3, 2008 at 6:59 p.m. TeenAngster

Hi there!

Fur is not something that Etsy has chosen to take a stance on. Selling fur items is not against the terms of use for Etsy, and is fair game for our marketplace. I agree with the roadkill/vintage sentiment completely - however, this article was meant to highlight higher priced items on Etsy that fit within the context of an Arctic wedding, not make any larger statement on behalf of Etsy's views on what is morally right or wrong as per animal rights.

Thanks for your comments! Please keep up the voting in our Party Duel!

April 3, 2008 at 7:03 p.m. moschell

fair game.... how appropriate. :)

April 3, 2008 at 7:04 p.m. BonzoGal

I think the fur thing is pretty distracting, though. The rest of the page is gorgeous and funny, but a real mink brings it to a "recoil" point.

April 3, 2008 at 7:07 p.m. Vanessa

You guys, please don't call out sellers who are selling things on Etsy that are allowed by our terms of use.

April 3, 2008 at 7:12 p.m. Sarahkat

I'm there if Flocke will be the flower girl. She's a major cutie.

April 3, 2008 at 7:13 p.m. dillondesigns

I understand that featuring fur doesn't necessarily constitute an admin endorsement, but you should understand that it will appear that way to many. I was shocked to see it, and disappointed.

If I were just a customer, seeing a fur item featured so prominently on the front page would seriously deter me from returning to shop here.

April 3, 2008 at 7:20 p.m. mrsm

nay on the fur, but the remainder is very nice. sorry, but that's my opinion. it really put me off.

April 3, 2008 at 7:20 p.m. Vanessa

Again. Please do not call out other Etsy sellers on the Storque.

April 3, 2008 at 7:23 p.m. boutiquetots

Stunning choices!Just stunning!

April 3, 2008 at 7:24 p.m. mrsm

vanessa, you asked us to comment. we are not calling out one person, we are more calling out the one material. yes, etsy allows it, but we are allowed to have opinions about it.

April 3, 2008 at 7:25 p.m. Chillionaire

OMG! The ice hotel uses reindeer pelts on their beds!

toasty.

April 3, 2008 at 7:26 p.m. soundinnovation

The furs are farmed, not trapped, so personally I'm fine with it.
Plus, it's perfect for the theme.
Also, I agree, polar bear AND narwhal!

April 3, 2008 at 7:29 p.m. UNEARTHED

I love the arctic diva fantasy.
BEAUTIFUL.

April 3, 2008 at 7:38 p.m. JMCdesigns

Just wonderful!!!!

April 3, 2008 at 7:45 p.m. BoringSidney

Yes, Artic Diva Fantasy defintely!

April 3, 2008 at 8:07 p.m. esdesigns

the dress and 2 rings are beautiful :)

April 3, 2008 at 8:51 p.m. bluedogrose

Fur is gross farmed or otherwise, fantasy indeed.

April 3, 2008 at 10:55 p.m. JackAy

This is definitely my perfect wedding!
I actually have had dreams about having my wedding in an ice hotel.
The narwal is an EXCELLENT touch, haha.

April 4, 2008 at 3:43 a.m. swanmountainsoaps

Sorry, but I LOVE the fur. Wear it all the time - well, OK only when it's below zero (or else it honestly gets too hot). Nothing man-made comes close.

I really don't get how wearing fur is any more cruel than, say, eating a steak. Yum.

And oh I love that 40s dress. Love it, love it.

April 4, 2008 at 7:16 a.m. creationsbylonni

Gotta vote for the Arctic fantasy. How do you beat an Ice Hotel? I just can't deal with cold, though. I mean hate it. That would be a major problem. Wouldn't be the first time I suffered for beauty...

April 4, 2008 at 11:13 a.m. gewellig

I'm a buyer, not a seller. I *used* to love Etsy and buy stuff all the time, mostly because Etsy seemed to put an emphasis on ethical and sustainable business practices. Selling mink? I feel like I've stumbled onto a department store website. Farmed or trapped-fur is inherently cruel and a vain, unnecessary luxury-and there is nothing handmade about it. How would Etsy respond if I sold art depicting how this fur coat was made? Or if I tried to sell the discarded, skinned carcases that are leftover? Can I sell live animals on etsy, or just dead ones?

April 4, 2008 at 11:49 a.m. Grumblepuff

This is the most amazing wedding idea I've ever seen. I vote for the arctic wedding!

Although when I get married it will probably be as low budget and informal as the other wedding, but a girl can dream, right?

April 4, 2008 at 12:02 p.m. GloamingDesigns

this is so amazing - i love it! i'm not a hot weather person either.

April 4, 2008 at 2:33 p.m. annamatrona

hahaha - i always like to keep a bucket of diamonds ready for impromptu snow angel making.

April 4, 2008 at 5:10 p.m. mishkat

I am a "buyer" also, and I thought putting this in the Storque and on the front page was an extremely poor marketing decision. If I didn't already know of some awesome (and animal-friendly) sellers here on Etsy, I'd be out of here. I understand that Etsy allows the sale of fur - my issue is with it being featured on the front page and in the Storque. I am glad to see that many sellers here don't agree with Etsy's decision to do this.

April 5, 2008 at 1:28 p.m. DeLane

haha this is great. I usually don't like cold weather but who can resist a polar bear and bucket of diamonds?

April 7, 2008 at 11:50 a.m. angforce83

This one has my vote too, fur or not. The article did what it was supposed to do--make me dream of weddings.

April 13, 2008 at 11:51 a.m. taibhse

For the people who are supporting or selling fur, maybe you should educate yourselves on exactly how fur is farmed or wild animals killed for. In China alone, many cats and dogs that you would keep as pets are skinned alived while fully concious, then thrown aside to die a slow, agonising death.
Fur Shame

Dec. 14, 2008 at 10:02 p.m. willnotbuy

lets just say etsy has lost my bussiness, I had seen alittle on what they offer, and I really liked it, but this fur thing is against my ethical and moral belifes, not only that, but the etsy people defending it as well! so, I'm off to do my holiday shopping elsewhere...

Dec. 14, 2008 at 10:03 p.m. willnotbuy

skinning animals alive is somehting that people really should care about (farmed or trapped, whats the differance? the animals dies a slow and painful death, not to mention half of it comes form dogs in china).

June 14, 2009 at 7:21 a.m. AudraDoll

I would love to be married in an ice chaple! How romantic.
