Our very dear and cherished, very popular artist here on Etsy, Slavko, sadly and tragically passed away on June 2nd 2009. His death has stunned and shocked not just those *knew* him. It is a great loss to Etsy and his many devoted fans and friends.
I consider Slavko a great friend of nearly 3 years here on Etsy. He was and is a great inspiration to artists of all ages — being kind, wise, generous, understanding and a leader. He was SUPER talented and above all, genuine and sincere in his beliefs about making original and buying handmade.
His many faceted work shows this: passion for color, detail, humor and his love of still life, nature and the outdoors.
A happy family man from a torn Bosnian background who ended up all the way in Georgia, he overcame hurdles galore. Fishing, sculpting, teaching and the friendly surroundings and community of Etsy and his many friends and admirers there were his relaxation and joy.
His talented wife MaidaC and her daughter Mia aka OblikAtelier, who also sell on Etsy, add these few words...
"He loved the Etsy community, he was grateful for you guys and he loved the way the Etsy network worked. He helped many that needed it, always doing it with love and care. Whenever a fellow Etsian was in need he was there. I know he was happy to have 'met' you all.

He is resting in the Chatahooche River, at the place where he loved to fish.
We miss him terribly, but we hope he's in a wonderful place smiling at us and gently pushing us to keep going forward."

Thank you Slavko for bringing a bright shining light to an otherwise dull world. Those who own your art work will always cherish it as I will and you will live on forever in our hearts. Etsy will be a very lonely place without you, but we know you won't be far from the Treasury's and Forums. Rest in peace now dear beloved Slavko.

What a sweet man. I'm so terribly sad to hear of his passing. He was so kind to me exactly this time last year. My dear friends lost their daughter and he donated two pieces of his jewelry to help with the funeral costs. His kindness, I'm sure, has stretched far and wide over the years. Slavko was one of the first to comment with more than one or two words on an early treasury I made, and he made my shop a favorite! He was so encouraging to a newbie. I hardly new him, but he made a big impression.

Oh my heavy, heavy heart.
Slavko was indeed the first kindest person I had met here on Etsy. From one artist to another, Slavko was---IS---the most generous & caring soul I have been so fortunate enough to find. Not only an absolute original artist, he was also the most supportive of other artists....such a rare thing to come upon. He encouraged more out of me than I would ever expect from another creative being, and such a welcome friend. I pray that others will continue to learn from his wonderful generosity & spirit.
I hope, and wish, that others were able to get to know Slavko in this way, because he will always remain an inspiration to me personally. So brave, so original and so kind.
My love to you Maida, his absolutely lovely, intelligent & inspiring wife as well! I will always treasure our conversations over health matters, and forever be grateful to Slavko for bringing our passionate minds together.
There simply are no words I can say right now, except to let you know how deep I am affected by this news.
The world is a more beautiful place because of Slavko. And that is something that no one can ever take away from our hearts.

I always had, in the back of my mind, a wish to someday meet Slavko -- I am so shocked and moved to know I won't ever be able to! Slavko shared his heart and work everyday for so many people. I met him because of the fund raising effort for Dawn's Boys in December 2007. How blessed Slavko was in spirit, evident in his daily life sharing all and everything he had to give.
One of my Slavko art works is a ceramic tile with 3 fishes, I will always think of Slavko protecting Maida and Mia when I look at my Slavko art work. The tile is right next to my front door, and always has been, to remind me to be a better person, as I leave my home to face the world.

Even though Slavko didn't know me personally, he mailed one of his brooches to me when he found out my Mother was terminally ill with cancer. He then went as far to try to help me find a job when I got laid off (we live in close proximity to each other). Who else do YOU know who would go to such lengths for someone whom they've never met? A true gentleman--and One of a Kind--we will miss you, Slavko!

Such a lovely tribute, Vicki, and very well written. I "met" Slavko through a very intense charity effort for Dawn's Boys back in the winter of 2007-2008. He helped us raise thousand's of dollars by helping us keep the donation threads alive, and promoting fellow artists who donated, and just being there to chat with us and make us smile. He later became part of our group, Etsy Angels Team, here on Etsy. He was such a generous and thoughtful person. Always had kind words to say! He'll be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers go to everyone that knew him, in person and in the Etsy Community, and to most importantly to his Wife and Daughter.

You both have my heartfelt condolences. Slavko was one of the very first etsian's here who hearted my shop and gave me encouragement as a newbie. His advice in the forums was always spot on-it's one reason why I never gave up.
It is amazing how many lives one person can touch in such a dramatic, wonderfully giving way. He was truly a philanthropist to others during his all-too-brief time on earth, and surely he will only do more phenominal work as one of God's most formidable angels from Heaven!

I first met Etsy through his friendly offers of help, and purchases in his store. And he actually shipped those valuable items long before payment made, due to our agreement. His trust touched me deeply, and this says so much about him!

Recently, I pulled out a "Blanket Coat" I had designed years ago. My talented Mother (she passed away 1 1/2 years ago) had worked her magic and crocheted the fringe around the border of the coat. I actually had forgotten about it, but when I held her work in my hand, in that one moment, I was reminded of her what it felt to have her alive once again. What a gift an artist leaves behind. Slavko told me he loved and had happy memories of Spain and wanted to visit again one day. There are candles burning in the Church for him there.
Here in the UK where I am now, there is a stone in the freshwater Pebble Pool in my local church... each one represents a person with a prayer of someone dear to you.

...I just found out about this today, dear Slavko will be surely missed. I have the great fortune to own a beautiful portrait pendant that he made for me that I cherish as one of my favorite pieces of jewlery(I also had the fun of doing a portrait doll for him in return: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?... ) He was an amazing artist, and was, in addition, a wonderful and incredibly sweet human being, and I'm honored to have 'met' him here on etsy.

This is the first I've read of the sad passing of Slavko. He was one of my favorite artists and one of a few I actually researched after reading posts here in the fora. I admired his talent and he seemed like a man I would love to have known as an artist. My thoughts and prayers are with your family, he has left a wonderful legacy. Gog bless.

Slavko was one of the very first to befriend me on Etsy, and offered constant support. I knew right away that Etsy was a special place because of Slavko. When he found out my mother was ill, he convo'ed me and my sister Karma several times to inquire about her, and sent her a special gift. Tragically, he died within a week of my mother, and I've been so wrapped up in grief from her passing that I didnt' respond to Maida as I would've liked. Maida, please know that you and Mia have been in my prayers - how nice to hear that Slavko is resting in the Chatahoochee - what a beautiful place. God speed, dear Slavko - you will be so missed.

OH I am so sad! I didn't know this until just now... He always impressed me with his Etsy "ethic". He would always comment on a treasury you featured him in, and he would always return the favor by featuring you in one of his. Slavko was one of the first Etsy sellers that I came to make an acquaintance with here and truly represented the sense of community that I feel Etsy wishes to achieve. I am so sorry I missed this until now, and my heart goes out to his family.

We are in shock and deeply saddened to tears after just now reading this terrible news. We have been away from etsy forums and treasuries for a while. We had recently been thinking of Slavko quite often and went to his shop today to write to him to say hi and see how he was doing and then read the sad news of his passing...so sorry we didn't do it sooner!
Thank you Vicki for this memorial and giving us all the opportunity to express our love for him.

It was 2 months on August 2nd since Etsy lost it's beloved Slavko and still tributes are coming in.
He IS missed terribly Jan and he will always be, yet he is still amongst us :)

I have been away from Esty for a long while and just today read in Vicky's shop the sad news of Slavko's passing. I am stunned and just want to add that I remember him as a really talented artist - he created so many beautiful pieces of art.
