(and I'm assuming my comment will be deleted from this post anyway) but one point about using sellers to 'market' etsy in the old-style street team idea is that as Etsy annoys or fails to deliver for more and more sellers, the amount of bad press disseminated will increase, in the same way that traditional customer service gurus point out that a happy customer tells one friend while an unhappy one will spread the word to 10. it's also more likely that marketing by disaffected sellers will move the focus away from etsy itself and more to their own websites or to other cooperatives. it's therefore feasible to foresee Etsy having to then rely on traditional advertising efforts to promote a 'glossy magazine ad image' of itself to counteract the negative media content

otherwise an illuminating interview as ever from Mr Kalin, thanks for sharing

hmmm street teams may be good for people that live in big cities... but I think that's about it us people in small towns get left out of that. Maybe its just me but I would love more buyers in here even if its because of big glossy ads and internet ads but hey its not my company Im just along for the ride and for now happy to be here

Good point ebbandflo. That's why why have to keep improving Etsy — both in the features we offer and in the ways that we communicate to our sellers. It's a difficult situation to be in — because we can't please everyone all the time. We are making decisions that we think are the best for the largest number of people and for the company in the long run. And when individual sellers disagree, we are counting on them not to turn their backs on Etsy as a whole. Overall, I see it as crucial that we continue to listen to our users — the weekly Chatt with Matt is good for this.
