Etsy's Handmade Blog
Congratulations, July Team Grant Winners!

Each month as the 15th rolls around and we peek into the Grant application folder, we're more and more impressed with the applications we've received.  For July 2008 Team Grants, it is our pleasure to announce the following receipients:

  • UPDATE 8/8/08: Unfortunately, we are no longer able to offer a grant to the So-Cal Bench Project Team at this time.  The reality is that there are protocols we must follow. In this case, deadlines for submitting required materials were not met by the applying party and we were not able to process the payment.  We wish all involved the very best of luck with this event , and encourage any and all to reapply next month.

Please go support this worthy cause on August 9, 2008, from 9:30am-3pm in Culver City, California. For more information, visit the SoCal Bench Project website

  • The {New New} York Etsy Team applied for a Teams Grant for help in putting together a holiday catalog of products found in their members' shops. We were completely wowed by this creative idea, and can't wait to see the handmade, finished product.

  • Check out the Vegan Etsy Team and their Team blog! This Virtual (based on interest, as opposed to location) Team applied for a Team Grant to place an ad in VegNews magazine to attract their target demographic to their Etsy shops.

  • In the October Issue of Weird NJ magazine, look for an advertisement for the Etsy NJ Team! This location based Team from the Garden State decided to pool together to place an ad in this state-wide publication.

Does your Etsy Team have an event, advertisement or other marketing project in mind? Apply for a Team Grant! As usual, thanks for being so wonderful, Teams, and congratulations to these completely awesome Teams for taking the initiative to get these projects rolling!

um........
yea?

Aug. 7, 2008 at 11:18 p.m. QuirkynBerkeley

it is most regrettable that etsy backed out of its commitment for a $200 grant for the socal bench projrct and by extension failed to provide promised support for american veterans. for shame!

Aug. 7, 2008 at 11:53 p.m. formfireglassworks

maybe....woo.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 12:06 a.m. peggradyart

What happened? Why did Etsy go back on its word? $200 is nothing to a corporation as large as Etsy but a great deal to a non-profit organization that benefits American veterans.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 12:24 a.m. designsbymariejulie

Why promise something to the Bench Project and not give it??? People pay out of pocket figuring on the grant that was promised. Bad business.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 12:26 a.m. suchandsort

what happened to CCCOE's grant? This is not good for etsy or those who are promised a grant, do the work for it, pay their own $$ and get squat in return.
not good, etsy.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 12:47 a.m. AlliesAdornments

I second this!
QuirkynBerkeley says:

it is most regrettable that etsy backed out of its commitment for a $200 grant for the socal bench project and by extension failed to provide promised support for american veterans. for shame!

Aug. 8, 2008 at 12:55 a.m. ohmay

I am not understanding why Etsy listed the So.Calif. Bench Project as a "winner" of a grant when in actuality, they are not getting it.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 2:47 a.m. TheChainmailleLady

And the $200 is even tax dedutable to ETSY since it was to benefit our veterans. Do you think Etsy would like to tell the veterans why they will not be receiving the money?

Aug. 8, 2008 at 10:58 a.m. yolandasclay

What a shame that etsy choses to back out from such a wonderful cause. To let the team's hope up and them drop them like that is sad.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 12:26 p.m. HelloCrafty

Why would you bother to post anything about the So-Cal Project if you're retracting your grant money? Once again, Etsy puts itself in a position of seeming to have done NO WRONG when we all know that there are two sides to this story.

I would encourage everyone to purchase Raffle Tickets to support our fellow Etsians and the CCOE team with this wonderful fund raising project since Etsy can't seem to do the right thing.

Your mothers must be so proud of you.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 12:46 p.m. sarawearsskirts

We love the opportunity to support Etsy Teams through the Team Grants program. Since we award several Grants each month, it is very important that Teams submit all the necessary information by the deadlines given when receiving a grant.
Unfortunately, we did not receive the information we needed in time to fulfill this grant. This change has been reflected in the article above.

If you have questions about this process or a grant, please contact me at teams@etsy.com.

PROBABLY a dumb move to cancel the grant

DEFINITELY a dumb move to publicly slap the hands that feed you and give you free advertising because you don't have a comprehensive marketing plan.

WOW

Aug. 8, 2008 at 1:21 p.m. HeArtCollective

seriously, our CCCOE community is so supportive of each other and certainly of Etsy (since that's where our things are currently being offered) and i'm glad that we're making up for Etsy's ridiculous retraction through the purchase of raffle tickets so that we can help them support our troops, but i think Etsy has sort of shot itself in the foot here... just my 2 cents.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 1:25 p.m. CombustionGlassworks

Saddening, that yet again etsy has stooped to a level i cant even fathom.

Taking money out of the mouths of our soldiers, that grant money should have came to us just because it was worthy cause, but ESPECIALLY because we did everything necessary to get it.

So said the Storque article that was published saying we were granted it.

Mindbogglingly, headdesking, plain ole cupcake sugar coma.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 1:28 p.m. QuirkynBerkeley

the issue of meeting the deadlines is contended and apparently has to do with unpublished deadlines -- the timing of the close of business on the west coast vs. the east coast, and whether the grant paperwork was due by midnight or close of business. nitpicking over $200. etsy is always asking its sellers to be understanding of its glitches. you'd think there would be some mutuality.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 1:36 p.m. sherrytruitt

I have no doubt that the street team had their proofs in on time, especially one as organized as this team who was supporting veterans. Does not etsy bear any resposibilty for not communicating with the team and just summarily yanking a grant of this importance? Thank goodness the fellow artists will step in and help.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 1:36 p.m. KreatedbyKarina

I cannot believe that Admin would PUBLICALLY list the reason why a grant was not accepted--whether or not that reason was true or not.

That is highly unprofessional, and discussing PERSONAL information that should be between Admin and the applicants *******ONLY*******

Aug. 8, 2008 at 1:39 p.m. KreatedbyKarina

I'm quite certain that the applicants can prove they handed in the appropriate info to you ontime by email time-stamps and the like....

Aug. 8, 2008 at 1:49 p.m. sococreative

I'm with Sherry, I've looked at the event website, the prizes they've gathered, etc and they have got it TOGETHER. Super impressive. I doubt they would have been the ones to drop the ball concerning an important grant.

And if Etsy got the grant materials in late, why wait so long (till literally days before the event), to yank the funds? And even more importantly- why announce it to everyone?

Aug. 8, 2008 at 2:04 p.m. LaveMeSoapCo

I am also appalled at how this has and is being handled. We have worked sooo hard to bring sellers and customers to ETSY.
I can't wait to brag at how well we will do tomorrow WITHOUT the help of the grant.
A notification would have been nice. This is not a show just to make money and to promote sellers. This is for a charity. An important charity that is badly needed.
I am once again appalled. I had higher hopes for this site.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 2:10 p.m. CraftDiner

This is a very sad turn of events. I hope Etsy thinks this over and makes it right.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 2:11 p.m. Mireio

Oh, etsy, etsy, etsy. When will you learn??

Blessings to the members of CCCOE... you all are making such a difference!!

And everybody else, let's fix what etsy broke--in this case at least. Buy a raffle ticket or two. Did you see those prizes?? WOW!!

Aug. 8, 2008 at 2:12 p.m. LaveMeSoapCo

Thank you everyone for all of this support! You are making such a positive out of this negative. I am truly touched and honored to be a member of CCCOE!!!!

Aug. 8, 2008 at 2:17 p.m. faro

All I can think say is...

...Etsy, it's pretty unbelievable what you DID to the CCCOE team!

Unbelievable!

Aug. 8, 2008 at 2:18 p.m. blackbird72

thanks everyone!

Aug. 8, 2008 at 2:18 p.m. faro

Oh- And I'm off to contribute. Gotta help make this wrong -- right!

Aug. 8, 2008 at 2:23 p.m. matt

In recognition of a worthy cause, Etsy today donated $250 directly to the New Directions charity
(http://www.ndvets.com/ ). The SoCal Bench Project Etsy Team is holding an event this weekend to
support veterans through this organization.

Etsy previously announced that the SoCal Bench Project Etsy team would receive a $200 grant to help offset the printing costs associated with this event. The Grant was not ultimately funded because deadlines were missed. We apologize for the poor timing of these announcements.

Etsy Grants is a new program designed to help Etsy Teams hold events and promote their shops
and Etsy. It’s important that Etsy diligently adhere to the rules and deadlines associated with the Grants Program so that we can be responsible stewards of our funds and so that we can offer monies in a timely way.

We understand that our communication around this specific Grant could have been better. And, while we remain committed to enforcing the rules and deadlines associated with the Grants Program, we don’t want the New Directions charity to miss out on this opportunity to positively interact with Etsy sellers and Etsy.

To avoid this type of confusion in the future, Team Grant winners will now be announced
after the Grant funds have been submitted to the Team.

Thank you.

thank you Matt and Etsy for doing the Right Thing.

a little love goes a long way.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 5:21 p.m. HeArtCollective

the momentum and energy really did motivate a positive end... unfortunately, this was a big misstep and one that will be remembered. hopefully, Etsy's young staff will learn a bit more professionalism. and teams will remember the power of working together.

big love,

Etsy "stepped up"? hmmm.. yeah, that's one way to put it.

Avoiding further bad press due to a company screw-up might be another.

In any case, glad it's all going to work out in the end. :-)

Aug. 8, 2008 at 5:27 p.m. AbeleesHandcrafted

I didn't double post, by the way. Etsy's servers apparently hiccuped when I was posting.

What a foxy, nice guy...

Aug. 8, 2008 at 6:39 p.m. formfireglassworks

Thank you - a step in the right direction!

Aug. 8, 2008 at 7:35 p.m. whitefluffydogs

What a cock-up. I hope that Etsy is able to communicate with CCCOE and get this straightened out, last minute donation or not.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 9:59 p.m. SoCalBenchProject

Thank you for all the support we have received with regards to this issue.

There were obviously miscommunications from BOTH sides of this issue; human or technical is irrelevant at this point, and there is no one specific party to blame.

We are very pleased to see Etsy Inc. donating $250 to New Directions Inc. which is a fantastic non-profit organization that allows our homeless veterans to get a new chance at life.

It is our hope that more specific guidelines/deadlines are addressed so that what happened here doesn't happen again. These new deadlines should reflect various time zones around the world so that all teams have the opportunity to participate in the new grant program Etsy is working hard to establish.

Thank you again for all your support.

Aug. 8, 2008 at 11:04 p.m. AmandaKLockrowJewels

Thank you for all the support!

And thank you Matt for the donation.

New directions is a wonderful charity and we are so glad to be able to help out this charity.

Tomorrow will be the first of many events we organize as a team and I can't wait!

Aug. 8, 2008 at 11:36 p.m. catiesblue

I think it's kind of tacky to have posted the reason why a grant wasn't given. Was that really necessary?

I'm glad it was worked out, and a donation given, because it looks like a wonderful, deserving cause.

But the damage is done, Etsy. Congrats on that.

Aug. 9, 2008 at 3:30 a.m. operatic

Once again Etsy makes the wrong decision based on poorly communicated rules, publicly humiliates a group of sellers, then, belatedly, does sort of the right thing.

It's a pattern of behaviour, and not a good one, guys. We remember this stuff, you know.

Aug. 9, 2008 at 6:52 a.m. thegypsyjewels

UPDATE 8/8/08: Unfortunately, we are no longer able to offer a grant to the So-Cal Bench Project Team at this time. The reality is that there are protocols we must follow. We wish all involved the very best of luck with this event , and encourage any and all to reapply next month.
----------------------------------------
IF any of etsys users had posted the above it would have been "calling out" ..
SHAME on etsys Administration for NOT handling this in a private and professional manner.

Aug. 9, 2008 at 11:19 a.m. handcranked

It's lovely of Etsy to finally decide to give a donation to the charity, but that still doesn't remedy the fact that the organizers of this event are personally out the money they were promised. They have put so much of their own time and money into this event and they deserve this money.

I'm not really sure how you can hold people to an unpublished deadline. If you're not clear about your exact deadline and someone misses it because of your lack of clarity, it's your job to pay them anyway. Obviously you have the money. It seems the only reason you didn't give it to the team was to make an example of them. And for what? Not being psychic and knowing what you meant by your vague deadlines? Oh, shame on them!

Really, what difference is there to you whether it's end of day NY or SF or midnight NY or SF? Either way, the work day is complete and you'd get them all at the same time the next morning.

Aug. 9, 2008 at 8:27 p.m. HelloCrafty

marymary says:
Discussing a specific member, shop or item (either by name or with identifiable hints) in a negative way is not allowed. This is referred to as "calling out."
*********

I'm assuming this applies to teams as well?

Aug. 9, 2008 at 10:47 p.m. crinolinestash

apparently admin are free to call out all they want. nice.

this whole thing is shameful.

Aug. 10, 2008 at 12:17 a.m. bruce822

Will we see proof that this donation was actually made? You can say anything to try and settle the masses, but the proof is in the pudding.

We;ve cut you a lot of slack with this site as it is, making excuses that you are a young site, growing pains, yadda yadda yadda, but you can't cut some slack for a new program that you instituted for the first recipients of this grant? That's a bit two-faced as far as I am concerned. Then to publicly chastise them was just in bad taste and poor customer service.

You people really need to get a clue.

Aug. 11, 2008 at 2:06 p.m. SoCalBenchProject

We were just notified by the non-profit that Etsy made a donation of $250.

Thank you Etsy for supporting our veterans through a wonderful organization.

We have posted the press release/article from the event on our website and Etsy page as well as sent a copy to Etsy Teams.
