UPDATE: The Etsy Cooperative Advertising Program is going strong! See Cooperative Advertising posts to get info on the latest opportunities and details on how to participate.
Many of you have asked if Etsy would ever sponsor cooperative national print advertising. We have heard your requests, and we are excited about the idea. In an effort to help support our artists, we are exploring a program that gives Etsy sellers a chance to show off their work in a variety of magazine advertisements offered at subsidized, cooperative rates. This is one aspect of our marketing plan for 2008, mentioned in an earlier article by Matt.
Print advertising can be very expensive. For example, a one page, full-color ad that appears once in Lucky magazine costs $92,420. You'll need to shell out a cool $255,840 for a page in Time. So, in order to get the most bang for our collective bucks, we will have to be selective about which magazines are chosen. This is where the subsidy comes in.
Etsy will pay for half of each ad.
Now for the cooperative part. We will take out print ads in a variety of magazines. We will design the ads, and offer spots in them to Etsy sellers at affordable rates. Some of the ads will be similar to our 2-page spread in Craft magazine, pictured above. By combining our purchasing power, everyone can benefit from the exposure without having to make the costly expenditure needed to advertise alone.
Other important details: You will get to display an image of one item, its price, and your shop name. The limit is one spot per seller, per advertisement. They will be sold on a first come, first serve basis.
Poll:
This is where you come in. The following is a list of the magazines that we are currently considering, along with the price for each one. If you would be interested in participating, please leave a comment below that includes which magazine(s) you would consider advertising in. Please note, that Etsy will also be undertaking our own advertising initiatives in other on and offline venues, but want to give you all the opportunity to get in on the fun.
This poll is only being used to gauge your interest! The exact details are subject to change, and your answers do not constitute any sort of agreement. Thank you for your input.
Venus Zine: Full page, 30 spots, $25 each
Craft Magazine: 2-page spread, 36 Spots, $70 each
Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion: Full page, 30 Spots, $75 each
Bust Magazine: Full page, 30 Spots, $100 each
Readymade Magazine: Full page, 30 Spots, $450 each
If you have other ideas for magazines where you would like to see advertising, please email them to adam@etsy.com.

I would definitely like to be in one of the first 4 on the list. Readymade sound great too, just a little out of my budget though.
amuckdesign
I would definitely be interested in Craft, Home Companion, and Bust. Let's do it!!!
UrbanIslands
Love it!! I'm in for co-op ads in these two: Venus Ezine and Bust.
http://urbanislands.etsy.com
abitabite
I would like to know how mature item sellers will be able to use this service?
Will we be able to display our whole item, or will an editted version be needed?
juliebcreative
Bust....im not familiar with the rest but id probably try out any of them
PoPkO
FANTASTIC! I am ready! I think Readymade is a good one, I took out advertising there on my own last year when they offered etsy discounts. It was great, but what about magazines that arent necessarily geared toward other artists n crafters. Bust and Venus seem to be popular with people who appreciate the independent artist too.
juliebcreative
bust...im not familiar with the rest but id proabbly try out any of them
abitabite
(sorry if this is a double post it appears to have eatten the first one)
I would like to know how mature item sellers will be able to use this service?
Will webe able to properly display our product, or will a censored image be required?
BellaDio
I would be interested in Venus and bust. Readymade would be a consideration if I was more established and could handle the expense.
jewelstreet
I would definitely be interested. It sounds great. I'm in for Venus and Bust.
I agree with PoPkO about finding some other mags that aren't geared towards other artists.
AnthroPoMorphCo
yes, please, what a wonderful idea!
i would love to be included in any of them, especially Craft and Bust... i love ReadyMade but that's a wholelotta money, too much for me. xo!
ChristineRenee
What a great idea! I don't know much about the Mary Engelbreit magazine, but they all seem like good choices.
I think ReadyMade would be my top choice, but sheesh that's expensive!
I'd be interested to know circulation/readership and CPM for each of the magazines.
PenelopeAndAnastasia
Adam - I'd be in for Venus or Bust; better suited for my jewels I think!
ChristineRenee
When you're thinking about the cost, don't forget that the more expensive magazines are likely reaching a lot more people.
charmingpaper
This is a great idea! Also one thing to consider would be to group types of sellers for targeted ads, like wedding vendors in a wedding mag, baby/child vendors in a parenting mag, etc.
Marmalady
are these all american magazines?
are there any plans to advertise in international magazines?
i am in the UK and have only heard of Craft (but only because i was featured in a previous etsy ad in it) but it is very expensive to buy over here
mysgarden
What a fantastic idea!!! I would be interested in all of them and the prices seem really reasonable for the exposure you would receive.
tracyyarbrough
I'd be interested in the Mary Englebreit magazine...great idea!
JuliaCatherine
A couple of people have told me that Venus magazine would be a great place to advertise my jewelry so i would be into that.
PoPkO
oh, also- you cant forget that you can get your own gallery space in readymade mag already without having to do a group thing. getting one spot in a set of 25 per page costs $475, and you wouldnt have to compete with other etsy people. it could be beneficial both ways, to be in the group to make a big splash, or work alone. so i think this could be more beneficial in other publications where its more costly to take out an ad on your own.
-popko
http://popko.blogspot.com
CorkandCotton
I would be interested in the first three. Venus, Craft and Home Companion.
thefunkyfelter
This is a great idea, but it still my be out of my budget unfortunately. I do think many Etsy sellers will benefit from it though. Perhaps eventually I will too :)
Feille
I'd be in for Readymade but really, there need to be some other non-crafty magazines. How about vogue, or even essence?
elloh
I'd be interested in Bust and Craft. Readymade is great too but not sure. I'm currently working on my taxes. blah.
EraserWorld
i would be advertising my strawberry anarchy shop though not this one
Jaynee
Very cool idea - hope we can branch out and add a few more publication choices (such as publications for the public as opposed to just other artists/crafters).
But still a VERY cool idea and I'd totally be up for it!
Dirtgirlpottery
Awesome! I like all the choices. Mary Engelbriet is all about making great finds and purchases and filling/redecorating your home yourself.
Urbanknit
i'd go for Craft because it is sold here in the UK. i also think i like the look of Bust
chichiboulie
I think you should look into Marie-Claire Idees here in Europe. It's a widely read crafting/home decor magazine. I would be wonderful to see Etsy in there!
dazeychic
In all honesty...none of these! Ek!
These mags are geared towards crafters and indie artists...
I would spend $100.00 per space in a magazine geared towards everyone though!
It just seems like I would be paying to advertise to people like myself and if they are already crafty and cool...odds are they aren't going to buy our stuff (sorry) they will make their own!
So, yea, sadly my answer is none.
(Fab idea though! Wrong markets!?)
xoxo
woolies
I'd be interested in any/all of the magazines. But, I would also like to include publications that are targeted to the general public, not just to the crafters, even if they are more expensive.
aprilscott
Venus & Mary Engelbreit's...I think M.E.'s Home Comapnion would be good to reach out to a new section of customers who don't know about etsty yet.
silverblayze
As most have already stated, ReadyMade seems steep. But the other magazines will provide great exposure!
adam
abitabite says:
I would like to know how mature item sellers will be able to use this service?

-----------
In the case of mature content, we will defer to the magazine's policies, as they reserve the right to approve the content of any advertisements.
woolies
I would be interested in any/all of the magazines. but I would very much like to see publications targeted to the general buying public, rather than just to the indie public, even if it is more expensive.
(trying this post again...)
kankalinhats
I'm with ChiChi here, Marie Claire! Dazeychick I think you have a point, I think more broad, lifestyle interest magazines would be better.
claudiasburningink
Adam, this is fab, I think Bust and the M.E., and Craft. But on Craft I would poll those who had spots in the Winter issue to see if it got them more traffic and more important more sales. I would so love to earn and make more so I could quit my 8-5 M-F
madelaine
Honestly, I would love to have an ad in Domino Magazine.
It's a great magazine aimed towards people interested in design and making their homes and selves happier and prettier (jewelry, clothing, furniture, and art gets featured a lot — plus anything one can decorate or used in the home with like plushies, soap, and stuff)!
They have mentioned etsy in an article before, and that's how I discovered etsy! :D
KatLambrix
how about (don't yell!) one of the Martha Stewart imprints? Though it might be really expensive...
or a more arts-focused mag like High Fructose?
Reincarnations
I would be very willing and very jazzed to have ads in Bust, Craft or Venus. Fabulous idea!!
castocreations
I have advertised in Bust and Venus and gotten squat.
Other mags to consider... Time Out Chicago (this was my best ad all year last year) as well as New York Mag. The ads are not cheap but they return better than other less expensive ads.
I'd rather spend $300 to get $1,000 in sales than spend $30 and get zero.
jenspeaks
I'm on board when I can afford the fees. I appreciate that your working on this for us.
I agree with looking at mags other than those geared towards crafters and indie. We have a large variety of sellers on Etsy and to limit advertising to those demos limits their ability to be seen as well.
Middle aged women are a large buying segment - maybe the biggest. They read:
Good Housekeeping
Parents
O (Oprah's mag)
People
I'm sure there are a dozen more I could name. I hope you're considering these types of venues as well at some point.
facingthetrend
I like the Venus option, simply since it is the least expensive and would be more accessible to a larger number of sellers.
morgansilk
I especially would be interested in BUST, even though I knowj that there are lots and lots of pages like that in there.
Craft, not so much interested in.
I would adore to be in a magazine that was more fasion-oriented and less trendy-oriented.
Great idea, def interested.
digitalmayhem
this is awesome!
My first choice would be Bust, second choice would be Craft.
ruralabandon
I would certainly be intersted in doing this. For me I would go with Bust or Venus...maybe Craft. I also think it would be ideal if instead of just the store name it would have storename.etsy.com for each person.
triciamckellar
I am very interested in sharing ad costs.
Targeting other crafters is not the best ad niche for me, I think-- but I'm an advertising newbie. :)
My art prints tend to sell to women (20-60) who are decorating their homes and offices. Domino magazine would be great or maybe Dwell or other home decor/lifestyle magazines.
Cheerupcherup
madelaine says:
Honestly, I would love to have an ad in Domino
Magazine.
Yes! Domino Magazine, and Blueprint Magazine. In my opinion, two artsy-fartsy friendly, popular magazines. I would love to have an ad in either of these.
mushroomgirl
Dwell would be great for the people here who sell funiture/design items for the home.
applecreekdesigns
I would advertise in any of the magazines, Readymade is beyond my budget.
I discovered ETSY in an article appearing in "USA Today" newspaper Life section - I too, would like to see ETSY advertised in some of the lifestyle magazines and newspapers aimed at the general public who do not know about ETSY(may be more expensive though).
andymathis
Home companion is the only 1 of those that I am familiar with. I think it's readership is more of the general buying public rather than the crafter/seller.
OneHoney
Before I would commit to an ad in any of these, I would need more information about circulation numbers and readership demographic.
abitabite
Adam - what would happen in the case that a magazine rejected a certain item?
Would etsy refund that spot and make it available to someone else or would it be none transferable, and the seller would have to use a product that the magazine approved of.
Obviously Martha Stuart Living would not accept mature items - but I am curious as to zines like bust and venus who might be open to we sellers of gag gifts and naughtyiness
digitalmayhem
I just went back and read all the comments... and I've changed my mind-- I think targeting a larger audience would definitely be better... as long as it's affordable, I'd definitely be interested in Marie Claire, Time Out (New York), etc.
andymathis
I am organizing something similar for the fine arts in American Art Collector-
http://artsts-collective.com
SupernovaDesigns
I'm going to guess that Vogue would cost *at least* as much as lucky. Using lucky as a cost guide. a $92K ad, split... let's say 50 ways (that doesn't give much space to each seller =/) is.... $1840. is *anyone* here willing to pay that for 1/50th of a full page ad, even in lucky?
Itybitybags
I would love to do Venus,Bust and Craft!!
Great idea guys! Very affordable, thanks :)
AmandaKLockrowJewels
I would definitely participate in co-op ads.
I would vote for Bust, I have to look into Venus. I would maybe do Craft.
I think Domino is also a good choice.
mittens
I am all for it, but a little concerned about the magazine choices, I live in Vegas and those magazines are not offered in too many places. To get more bang for the buck shouldn't it be in a more popular magazine that is wide spread? Just a thought. I do like the Domino suggestion.
It is offered at almost every retail location.
thegreenefairy
This is a great idea! I'm all for advertising in every magazine possible! Especially Bust, that seems like a pretty well known one :)
fenrislorsrai
I'd like to see some options not aimed at craftspeople/women's interest. Some niche magazines have really reasonable ad rates but still have a sizable circulation.
I was considering taking a small ad in Fangoria all by myself cause it's $60 for a 250,000 person circulation. Not too shabby!
Considering we have a "geekery" category on Etsy why is there nothing Geeky on here like Popular Mechanics, Wired, Popular Science, PC Gamer, Playstation Magazine, or for that matter ANYTHING aimed at men? Why is half the population being ignored?
MangoTango
>I'd rather spend $300 to get $1,000 in sales than spend $30 and get zero.<
I agree! Except for Mary Englebreit, I've never heard of these. I'm willing to pay more to get more. Huge circulation, please, in something targeted at buyers, not sellers. Please give this a try. You'll get your 30 spaces sold, no problem.
abitabite
I suggest someone go here and find out just how much Marie Claire ad is
http://www.marieclairemk.com/r5/home.asp
Because i am betting like time, it is a 6 digit number for a single page. Split 30 ways is still several thousand a piece.
archaicdesign
i am interested in readymade or whatever zine that reaches the most potential buyer!
castocreations
Supernova...it would be half of that amount and yes, I would pay $1,000 to be part of a huge ad in a national magazine. I've done it before (though sadly with no sales). Every advertising opportunity is a risk but there are always rewards for those willing to risk it.
exoskeletoncabaret
I also would be for putting ads in Wired or MAKE to help target male customers...though I read those too! :)
I think I could afford about $75 for an ad, personally.
castocreations
Also, targeting big cities with supportive art/craft industries is a good idea. Chicago, New York, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco ... all of these have regional magazines that are usually LESS expensive to advertise in.
littleelf
I would be interested in Craft, Home Companion, or Bust. Readymade would be nice, but that's way out of my budget.
pookeh
this is a fabulous idea! hooray!! i would be all about paying for ads in bust, venuszine, and craft fer sure! altho, i wouldn't be able to afford more than a 75 bucks personally.
archaicdesign
another great magazine is 'American Style' and or 'Ornament' ;)
rikrak
love it!
love the concept and the look and the fun co-opness!
love all those mags, too!
great!
pookeh
fabu idea! i'd love to have to opportunity to advertise in bust, venuszine, and craft magazine myself. as for my budget, i wouldn't be able to afford more than 100 bucks for an ad myself.
artisanwoodcrafting
home campanion would be the only one that would fit my product. definately need more of a variety of publications, but am interested
AliciaBock
I would pay more for a magazine like Domino, Martha Stewart, Rachel Ray, The People Style Edition, or Vogue Living.
One with a broader target market.
Seems like the magazines on the list are geared toward crafty people, so that might attract more sellers to open shops. But, we really need magazines geared toward shoppers.
pearlbythesea
What an exciting idea!!
I think Real Simple might be a great mag to target as well, because many people who read it love crafty housewares, but are not crafters.
morganstreet
This is a great idea! I do agree with AliciaBock about possibly targeting shoppers over crafters.
That said - I would definately spend $100 for a spot in Bust.
avrilloreti
this is a really great idea!
bust, readymade, and craft for sure!
juln
The layout is crisp, but perhaps a little uninspired. Something more artistic might catch people's eyes, perhaps?
I've never read any of those magazines, so I'm not sure. Something a little more mainstream might be a good idea. If I've never read those magazines, who knows if my prospective customers have!
There is a huge range of styles and mediums on Etsy.
Maybe you could pick some magazines that are geared towards specific markets, in reflection of this? Since beads as supplies and also lampwork beads are fairly large on Etsy, how about a program for a bead magazine like Bead and Button or Beadwork?
anda
Keep the suggestions for other publications coming! We want to look into ones that are more geared towards shopping, but it is really difficult to find ones that would be affordable for Etsy users to buy into. I really like the idea of targeting regional magazines like Time Out.
jenlo262
I would go for Venus or Bust. Love the idea! Wish there could be more home/garden type of magazines. Too expensive?
castocreations
Anda...I'm tellin' ya... Chicago Time Out ROCKS! :) It's really been my best ROI.
sewbettie
I would buy one for Craft magazine. I hear what Alicia is saying but I sell products that appeal to crafters so the reserve is true for me at least...!
MagyarBeader
Great idea! But,as many have already said, It would be of greater benefit to sellers to target a wider audience of potential buyers rather then sellers.
Something a little more mainstream.
ShopClementine
ME Home Companion is a great idea, it hits a much different market than the other 4 mags listed.
I would also be willing to pay $1000 for a co-op ad in Lucky, Martha, Rachel Ray, etc. Seriously.
AccessoryLady
This is great! I would definitely do all three publications $100 and under. Perhaps even up to $150. As for other magazines I recommend Natural Home and Body & Soul Magazine. I think those readers would totally embrace handcrafted goods.
matt
Domino would be great, but ads run $82,000 per page or $1400 per seller.
Look at this:
http://www.dominomag.com/howtos/2007/...
Editorial makes a much big bang than an ad
anda
mittens, re: bang for the buck..."buck" is the operative part of that phrase. Larger magazines = prohibitively expensive. I mean, we *can* crunch the numbers and will do so if there is interest, but I don't know how many people here are ready to put down amounts in the 1,000s of dollars for a space in a co-op ad.
Juln, I agree the ad need to be eyecatching, but I think having a showcase of item images in a similar format to the one above is one of the best ways to do this. Etsy item photos are notoriously beautiful -- the grid also reinforces the branding of the Etsy homepage, Treasury, etc. It allows the item to speak for itself and not get lost in the design of the ad.
seealso
the previous comment about targeting specific american cities makes me wonder- what are these magazines' international distribution like?
i think it's important to advertise outside the u.s. as well.
Wisechild
It's a wonderful idea, but as others have said, I would like to see more magazines that are geared towards shoppers.
Wisechild
It's a wonderful idea, but as others have said, I would like to see more magazines that are geared towards shoppers.
crinoline
I vote for make, juxtapoz, bitch, and domino (but I heard they folded?). that, plus the ones originally mentioned, covers pretty much every magazine I read.
AccessoryLady
Excellent news. I'd recommend Natural Home Magazine & Body + Soul Magazine.
I would want to buy slots $150 and under.
melissakate
that's a great idea anda!
and I agree with everyone above about targeting buyers, not sellers - but that being said, I'd lay down my $$ for Venus, Craft or Bust right now :)
jorgensenstudio
Ornament is a good mag to advertise in- Also other artist medium magazines- not just the bead ones.
Most people that are artists value buying from other artists.
Pottery Making Illistrated
Ceramics monthly
Studio Potter
are some for potters-
Lapidary Journal
art jewelry
metalsmith
there are Photography mags, fiber art mags, fine art mags etc.
There are also mags for areas of the country like
SantaFe
SouthBeach
palm Beach
Boca Raton
that are places to advertise for high end buyers
I would def. do this. I have in the past with my street team.
tigerluxe
i'm on the fence about this idea...but it does seem to have some really good possibilities...i would be interested in knowing how often spots would be available, and if there would be a cap on how many times a shop could participate...in order to give everyone a chance to participate?
kimonomomo
I'd be up for any mags targeting crafters since I sell supplies. I've got an ad in the next issue of Threads already, but that's also a good one to think about.
sagittariusgallery
...This is tough.
I have never heard of Venus, though I like it and it's probably best suited for my line of work.
Readymade is out. I certainly don't have 450 to spend on advertisement, and if I did, I'd be shelling it out for a personal ad in ArtNEWS, which would better suit my advertising needs.
For me, the Bust website crashed. I know that's just a personal experience but because of that I'd say no.
So...I guess I'd say Venus. But I am sure you see my dilemma - and I am sure what would be the dilemma for most "fine artists" - would hate to be a guy painter looking at this, cause the only one that fits me is "Venus", and that's geared towards women :P
snegoratchka
I've been thinking about cashing up for this- way better to go as a group. I'd be in for anything less then 100 bucks, at least to start
momomatic
Absolutely! I was just asking about this in the forums.
Mary E's magazine, Venus and Craft for sure.
daisycakessoap
I would definitely want to participate after the full range of magazine choices has been explored!
lenastudio
I'd be particularly interested in Craft Magazine. What about American Craft?
Squeedles
I'd love to have my ad placed in several of those magazines! Especially Craft...
grafikexpressions
Co-op advertising is the most affordable way for most of us. It's a great idea.
samsshop
Not being to up on any of these magazines, I'm looking purely at my pocketbook, so of course, I would opt for Venus Zine, Home Companion and Craft Magazine.
Any chance of maybe doing 1 or 2 mainstream magazines such as Martha Stewart or even Real Simple?
TotusMel
I like bust, but I also like more mags geared toward shoppers, not crafters.
Theothersister
This is a great idea. I agree completely with samsshop above. Please consider Real Simple.
adam
For those of you who may not be familiar with these magazines, click on their links to go to their web pages. For more info on their audiences, look for the About or Advertise links on those sites.
NinaGibsonDesigns
I agree with TotusMei. With that in mind, I guess I'd have to say Bust.
myOlivette
absolutely! I've done Readymade, but I'd love to get in on Bust and Craft!!
lake
I think all these magazines represent great advertising for a nicely targeted group of readers and potential Etsy customers. It also seems that utilizing all 5 magazines would cater to various Etsy sellers' ad budgets.
It would be nice to see even a "higher" (for lack of a better word) craft magazine option....like lenastudio's recommendation of American Craft... or Metalsmith, Ceramics Monthly, etc.
DancingMooney
Wow, very cool! Still a little out of my budget at the moment, but it'll be great to know the option is available...
♥
LaAlicia
This is a great idea. I am up for Venus and Craft the others may be outta my budget right now. It would be nice to look at a little more information about the demographics of the people who read each publication.
A couple of other magazines that might be worth exploring are Real Simple, Blueprint, Domino and Graphic Design USA.
UglyKitty
I'd go to ME's Home Companion. Craft, Venues, Bust, and ReadyMade are magazines a) geared to toward crafters as opposed to shoppers and b) most of the readers are already familiar with Etsy and I'd rather work on brining in new people to the site.
I know many people who are into home decor, products, shopping, etc. who would read ME's magazine and may not have heard of Etsy (mainly an older less computer-oriented crowd).
ME also has an incredible following already established through her designs and products.
AnnieHowes
This is great. My only concern is that I don't want to advertise to a market of other crafters. Not that crafters aren't buyers, but I'd prefer a more fashion/trends periodical to advertise in.
I'd also want to know the circulation of each magazine (actual subscription numbers, not just number of printed copies or distribution) that the ad will appear in. Is it a national Magazine? Regional? What are the reader demographics?
gorjuss
I wouldnt advertise in a magazine I hadnt heard of, If i hadnt heard of them, chances are they arent reaching my target audience either.. and I havent heard of any of these, so, no.. none of them :)
SecretLentil
this is a fantastic idea. i'd pick Venus from this list but would REALLY be thrilled if the list expands to the less maker-oriented.
i think there must be other design/artsy mags that aren't all-out mainstream, and so perhaps not so pricey, but also would reach an appreciative audience.
i'm going to look at the bookstore and come back with some other suggestions. i think it might be a great idea to specialize somewhat so more people can find their niche.
thanks for this! -helen
memory
I think the Venus one has a decent price that makes it attainable for smaller businesses.
Also, I would not participate in the Craft one, as I feel that would work to draw in a lot of new sellers, not necessarily buyers.
andymathis

that's a good idea too. have a co-op jewelry ad in a jewelry magazine. Co-op baby items in a Parenting magazine, etc
bijoutery
Yeah, great concept and I'd be interested perhaps, but not with any of these magazines. Besides that I couldn't really feel like I could spare that much right now on advertising - maybe later.
Plus, I've not heard of a one of these magazines, so why would I want to advertise in them? And its not like I live in a hovel or something, I even worked in a large national bookstore (been awhile back) where I helped shelve magazines and don't recall seeing any of these.

I really agree with what alicia said.
I know that in Denver there is a local (and what appears to be a high-end) mag called 5280, and in thinking along these lines, maybe you could identify some key cities/regions/countries and find out similar publications that are geared to a large local readership and about their ad fees.
*just brainstorming. ;)
ldobbin
I like the idea! I would deffinately pay for a spot! Not the craft one...as it would attract more sellers, and people looking at our stuff and wanting to possibly duplicate.
spugmeistress
any chance of something similar but on the web? it would be awesome to have a chance of getting onto some of the websites that indieclick does the adverts for (a ton of well known webcomics, suicide girls, the hype machine), and far more suited to certain sellers who have a slightly different demographic to the ones who would do well in these magazines. i'd guess it might be cheaper as well, and although the ads are smaller, the animation/rotation means you can probably fit quite a few slots in
nursesnaturally
I think it is a great idea. However for me, the rate is more than I can afford.I could maybe go to $50 in one other than the Venuszine. If I could would go for two stated.
Art2ArtColorado
p.s.
sorry, but i also forgot to say that this is a great idea re: co-op ad opportunies and i would be very interested in all of those you mentioned.
CircaCeramics
SO AWESOME that this is being offered!
From the choices presented, we'd go with both Venus + Bust - Maybe M.E., but I need to look at an issue...
And I like Helen's (SecretLentil) comment about shooting for a less 'maker-oriented' audience - We love Craft & Readymade, don't get me wrong :)
Also, we would pay more than the Readymade price for a tiny bitty square in a more mainstream mag - Especially if it's got crazy circulation.
Would the magazine have an online version of it (the print ad) as well do you think? Or would that be an extra charge?
Nancy
loveoneworldzero
We are very interested in advertising. Craft and Bust are on the top of our list.
utiledulci
I would be interested in Home Companion, as well a more buyer than crafter targeted magazine.
slugwork
I first found out about etsy from that ad in Craft, so I think it is a great idea. I would be interested in the first three; like many others, Readymade is a bit pricey for me at this time.
EttiandOttisOddments
What a fantastic idea!
As a seller who has sold on Etsy only a short time, but has sold other places for 6 years, I am always trying to find a good place to advertise.
With prices being so high, I try to get the best bang for my buck (buckS!!).
I think BUST, and Mary Englebreit are both great places. I have advertised in BUST before and I was thinking recently to go with one in Mary Englebreit's mag or Somerset Studio.
Craft is a great one, but it is expensive per copy, I wonder what their sell-through is?
ReadyMade and Venus I am not familiar with.
I have also considered advertising in Adorn.
I am SO excited about this! What a great idea!
Michelle
lilfishstudios
I think Craft and ME's Home Companion would be the best venues for my wares.
Love that this is being offered and would really LOVE to see the same for online components.
Thanks!
matt
All good points I am reading here. Please remember, that this is a pilot program. If it works, we would very much want to expand it into more specialty magazines. Ie jewelry magazines for jewelers, parenting magazines for those who make children's clothing and toys
CircaCeramics
SO AWESOME that this is being offered - Thank you!
Of the choices provides, we'd have to say Venus + Bust for sure, and maybe M.E - But I need to get my hands on an issue or go to their site.
Also, we'd be willing to pay a bit more than the Readymade price for an itty bitty square in a mag that gets crazy circulation :)
And is there any chance that the magazines chosen offer a tandem online advertising version of the print ad? For a bit more?
And I agree with what most of the comments made about not going with 'maker/artist-oriented' magazines - As much as we love them :)
Nancy
smashing
$450 isn't in my ad budget. yet ;) but readymade would be my vote. i probably wouldn't want to advertise in any of the others.
this is a great great great idea! thank you! :)
BirdUncaged
This is a great idea! I would be very interested in advertising in Craft, Venus and Bust if this program were offered! Thanks!
localcolorist
Where's the money ?
Please advertise in magazines read by people who enjoy spending money for handmade with their abundant discretionary income.
I would pay for a co op ad in The New Yorker Magazine or the Smithsonian Magazine. The price of the ads in those two publications are a bargain value compared with equally well known magazines.
The New Yorker and The Smithsonian magazines are beloved and read all over the world.
I would prefer if Etsy would develop a branding ad campaign that did not include a busy page of multiple products on a tiled board. A quarter page ad campaign celebrating Etsy cleverly, would be far more productive and lucrative for all concerned than advertising in a niche market, a crafting set of magazines. Ads in the array offered by Etsy will bring in sellers, not buyers.
BeautifulEra
I'd be interested in Venus, Craft and Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion. ME Home Companion would be the most suited to my work and of the most interest to me. I'd also be interested in Adorn if it became available. Thanks for the article and possible opportunity!
strawberryluna
Of those listed options, I would say Venus and Ready Made are the most likely for me.
Great idea yinz!
roccadesigns
I would love the opportunity to appear in any of those ads, but I honestly think advertising in fashion magazines such as Lucky, bazaar, instyle or cosmo would be better exposure than the crafting magazines mentioned above for some etsians. I would love if those were an option too.
strawberryluna
Ooooh, I meant Bust, not Ready Made, DOH! I would love to do something in RM but the price out uber out of my range. Sorry!
vintagevarietyshop
bust or me home companion. M.E. probably has the most diverse readers....my 60 year old mom, all her friends, and I am 36 and never miss an issue. bust is great and my shops' target audience, but not as well known all around....M.E. will target many people outside the ETSY relm. Thanks...great idea...I am so in!
vintagevarietyshop
I am brand new to ETSY and love the idea, have friends with shabby chic shops...they do it all the time!
thymbyldesigns
It would be very useful to all those not living in the 'Etsy Meantime' zone if you could give us a hint as to at what time of day or night you're planning to start off the race for spots?
FrucciDesign
I'd go for Bust, but I agree with the other in saying that maybe a less narrow audience would be better.
Anyway thanx for the opportunity, you guys are great!
MadisonReeceDesigns
I would try Venus. Hope you guy's continue to do more of this.
Thanks
sarahogren
Great idea!
I'd like to advertise in Home Campanion.
I think any home design magazine would be a good option as well. Oprah's design magazine, elle decor, etc.
vanillalotus
I would try craft magazine. That looks like the only one that my pieces would fit into. Maybe I would try others if I knew what type of audience reads them.
geekxnerd
I think that my products would advertise nicely into any of those magazines, however Readymade is beyond my price range at the moment. Bust would be my first choice out of any of them.
LolaBee
i think mary englebreight would be a good fit and would gladly pay that # to advertise!
thanks!
curlygirlglass
I would totally be interested in participating in an ad buy like that! I'd go as high as $100, but $450 is out of my budget. I haven't read all the comments, but I agree with other to focus more on 'zines with buyers rather than other crafters.
Now, how to pick who gets to participate...
miscelena
I like the $30-$50 price range. I think that co-op ads for particular niche categories would be fabulous as well.... books/zines/paper goods in Bookmarks magazine, wedding in Brides magazine, toys in Parenting magazine or geekery in Wired or Scientific American.
While yes, Time Magazine is a bit TOO wide/expensive of a distribution, perhaps ME and Craft are a bit too narrow (and likely to be read by people who often say "I'm not going to buy that - I could make it myself"...)?
curlygirlglass

accessoriesbysarah
I would be intersted in "Craft" and "Home Companion".
Also "Time Out Kids New York", they have mentioned Etsy as a buying resource.
Thanks for your research into this.
pulpsushi
Yes yes yes!!!! I would love to take part in each of these publications. :)
I work at a magazine so I know that the real comes in ad space sold, not so much in subscriptions or newsstand sales.
chickrocks
I would be interested in a 30-$60 price range. How about 'DWELL' magazine?
glitterstar
I would love to take part. Venus, Bust, Craft, or any other magazine in that price range.
hobbledehoy
I would be interested in Venus, Craft, Bust, and Home Companion. Very very very interested!!!!!
hobbledehoy
I would be interested in the following:
venus
craft
bust
home companion
very very very interested.
ThinkingMama
I love this idea! I think a lower price range would be nice so that smaller shops could benefit too. Also, what about some topical mags, ie: parenting/pregnancy mags for those who sell baby and kids stuff, decorating mags for those who sell home furnishings/art, etc.
I agree with others that some non-crafting mags would be great! We want buyers, not copiers!
projectfelt
Heck yeah! Im all for craft! I would take that issue and fram it forever. its always been my dream to be in that magazine ever since I descovered it whether it be an ad or not.
Thanks for the great idea.
tartx
I would be interested in Venus, Craft, Home Companion and Bust. I advertised in Bust around X-mas and the response to the ad was excellent! Very worth it.
ReadyMade is an excellent magazine as well. However, that is their price for a mini ad in their Gallery section of the magazine and with a mini ad you get 10 words as well. So they should extend that to Etsy as well. It is nice to have a few words to put in your ad so you can offer a coupon or promocode. I did this with both Venus and Bust. This helped me to be able to gauge what the response was from each magazine. Of course it is a lot less expensive to do a cooperative ad so it is kind of completely worth it even it if you only get a few sales. Although - seriously great response from Bust. . very worth it! Xo
BlueLadyBeads
I would be interested but would like more information on the magazines as others have said. I would also like to see more focus on magazines geared towards people with money to spend.
AnomalousBits
I would be interested in Home Companion, Bust & Craft Magazine ;)
cassowaryjewelry
Bust and Venus! I would like venus the most, but advertising in Bust has been a goal of mine..
faerwear
none of these choices, except for maybe Bust, do anything for me. they're all crafty magazines, aimed at other people who make stuff, or buy inexpensive crafts.
it would be nice to see at LEAST one or two options that accomodate those of us who make more expensive items - like say, Budget Living, or Organic Style.
angelacatirina
WOW! We would be interested in this.
For us:
Craft Magazine
Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion
.........these fit our customer base and are in our budget.
Ready Made Magazine...... this is interesting to us but maybe out of our budget.
** I would also be interested in magazines that target teen and 20-something girls.
Teen
YM
....I don't know the names of many but this is one target range that we do reach.
I would also be interested in magazines that focus on stay at home moms and women of retirement age:
Family Circle
***** McCalls Needlework & Crafts *****
Crochet Today
Knit 'n Style
Vogue Knitting
Interweave Knits
xbonebrat
I would be interested in Bust and Craft...which is in the somewhat higher price range but it would definately hit Etsy's target marget...
I've bought items from looking through the Etsy ads in Bust and now I have a favorite designer from that...
I think the best bang for the buck would be Bust...I find it's better known amongst my peers and I think it's been around longer than Craft...the price of the magazine is alot less expensive...where I live anyhow...where I bought it...in Canada...it cost 17 dollars and Bust costs 7 dollars...so I think people are more likely to buy Bust...
Then again...the pictures might be alot smaller and might not grab attention in a one page ad then a two page spread...
These are things that have to be weighed I guess but in all...the Bust and Craft price range is my pick...
G.
MayaBella
Craft: sounds good to me. I love that mag. And it is pretty affordable for my business. :)
juln
I agree with localcolorist's post above.
The New Yorker would be a great place to advertise Etsy in general.
I'd be interested in seeing the circulation figures for the various magazines, too, so we have more info about the relative prices.
crescentwench
Venus, Craft and Bust sound awesome. $100 is the absolute top I could some up with. I'd suggest JANE magazine as a good spot to advertise. The mag is only like $3 so it's often my guilty pleasure magazine when I'm low on funds.
AthenaWorkman
I'd be very interested in Home Companion. I'm just worried about the stampede when this becomes available.
PersonalTreasures
To add a bit more. . .
I'm with the folks who would like to run ads in magazines that target readers with money to spend who appreciate crafts - and I'd be willing to pay more for those ads.
thecreativejar
I work with magazines everyday in my "real" job - I believe that your choices would hit the target market of people interested in our creativeness.
And I would be interested in all - have actually thought of purchasing space on my own - but KUDOS if we can join and promote all us creative folk together!
wickdpissajewelry
I would be interested in the venus zine magazine, keep me up to date, thank you.
dillondesigns
Yes to Venus and Bust, to be sure.
I'd be less interested in Craft, only because I think the readers are more likely to be interested in selling than buying.
wishonbish
i'd love a spot in Bust, this is a really great thing you are doing!
SalmonStreetStudio
Yeah, Venus and/or Bust, same reasons as others have stated about target markets etc.
yipestoo
Venus or Home Companion. I have seen Etsy artists in Home Companion.
thebeadedlily
Venus is the only one that i feel is currently within the range of my pocketbook, but they all look like great choices.
hobocampcrafts
Venus or Bust possibly Home Companion. What about Adorn Magazine? That might be cool too!
loosewirestudio
Utne would be pretty affordable, I'll bet.
This is *exciting*!!! :)
ThreeFrenchHens
short of Martha, Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion is a great opportunity
ladyartisan
I probably wouldn't be into any of these magazines. I would be interested when/if you start doing more niche magazines (hitting mags for specific interested--i.e., some of the doll mags like Doll Collector or Art Doll Quarterly). I also think Smithsonian and American Craft would be great venues for advertising, as well as the smaller, regional mags.
kibblets
So, in other words, it's the sellers that are really paying for the ads, and not Etsy?
garnishdesign
Bust for sure.
Readymade is cool, but priced and likely geared towards other makers.
I have never heard of Venus, but am interested!
Might I also suggest: Organic Style and Body + Soul.
$150 range would be my max. Thanks for thinking about this!
terrain
I vote Bust and Venus. I don't thinking selling crafts to crafters is the most effective use of advertising dollars.
I was also going to suggest Real Simple like someone else did until I found out that a page ad is $180,000. Ouch.
RaeGun
sounds good is there any info of the circulation of each of these?
I think it would be interesting to do an add maybe in blueprint or one of the lesser known women's magazines
katwhitt
I would be interested in home companion. Better homes and gardens and southern living would be awesome but I'm sure it's wicked expensive.
dcdesigns
First of all let me say I think this is a great idea.
As far as the magazine choices go I'd say Bust and Mary sound the best.
The others are geared towards people who make stuff. People who are very likely to see the ad and say, "Wow, I could make stuff and sell it on Etsy just like all these people."
Frankly, I don't want to pay for advertising for more sellers. I want to advertise to buyers. People who are interested in spending money to buy something that is not ordinary. People who will look at that gorgeous ad and say, "Wow I love that shirt, hat, necklace, print etc. and have to go check out that artist and buy something."
I don't need to advertise to people who craft. I need to advertise to people who like to buy art and like to buy unique things for themselves.
I think marketing towards the teens and very young adults is smart because they have more disposable income. I also think some higher range mags, like maybe fitness or cooking or women's magazines could bring in the late 20's and up who have some money to spend.
I would like to reiterate the fact that advertising in magazines marketed to people who make stuff is simply advertising etsy to more potential sellers.
As a seller this would not be optimizing my advertising dollars. I think craft, readymade and venus kinda fit that realm.
magickalrealism
I'm leaning towards Bust and Venus - they're more likely to have a higher ratio of potential buyers to potential sellers, and that's who we need to see more of now, unless you want people who sell *specific* items.
punkinhead
I agree with a lot of others here, we need to target buyers, not other crafters. That said, there are a lot of mags out there that would be perfect for some of our makers to adv. in - bead mags, tile art, fabric art, etc... and then there are the baby mags, parenting, etc.. that people who make children's items would be interested in. There are SO many ways to target this idea.
The regional one is a great one - most states have magazines, and the street teams might want to get involved with buying space in those. Big cities, regions (SW, NE, etc...) also have them.
Don't limit this to just crafter mags. I've already had one "fan" send me flickr pics of the Snowfolk she created after being inspired by my work, it wouldn't be tough for a crafty person to recreate my work rather than buy it.
DestinysCreations
I think the price point is perfect.
I am not familiar with these so I need to check to see which has the highest circulation.
I love this idea though!! Thank you for putting this together :)
jimmypickles
I think the idea is great and the co-op costs are very fair. I would love to be part of an ad co-op in
Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion.
katinkapinka
i ♥ mary engelbreit's home companion. obviously lucky magazine is quite expensive, but it would reach a ton of people that are looking to shop. i'd be willing to pay a fair chunk of money to be a part of an ad that would get that kind of exposure. domino is a good mag, too, but i believe it's run by the same people as lucky, so it's likely to be just as expensive.
cottage living is another good magazine...seems to be directed at people that are interested in unique and handmade/homespun things...has a really great mix of modern and retro styles and the mag in general probably appeals to men as well as women.
what about local magazines...i know there's a few here in austin, like austin monthly. maybe a group of locals could participate for something like that? an austin rag would be a great place for that kind of advertising because everyone in the city and surrounding areas is very interested in buying locally/handmade.
awesome. i love this idea. hope to see this come to fruition!
eneefabricdesign
This coop idea is interesting and I would be eager to do it when I can be provided with stats on success rates for ads in these publications.
I would also like to see an equal effort by Etsy to budget and spend ad dollars on a regular basis, which is what all other retail sites do - advertising is a given when members pay their fees. It's part of the package of support services that Etsy should be offering all its sellers all the time.
I need some proof on how these coop ads will result in actual sales for Etsy stores. It appears that this is a great way to get attention for individual products out of millions of products in the current Etsy inventory, but will it help make actual sales?
bombalurina
Venus and Bust. I am interested in ads targeting retail buyers in the overwhelming majority. Craft and Readymade do not do this as effectively, and like others have said, why would I subsidize recruiting more competition?
Would also be interested in other pubs: BOMB magazine, Wallpaper, Nylon, Black Book. The demographics in the media kits look right.
bellasymphony
I would be interested in advertising in a baby or child magazine if that hasn't been suggested?
AlmaB
I'm not familiar with any of these magazines, as I don't live in the US, but am looking around for print advertising options at the moment, so would definitely be interested if it went ahead.
If you're looking to advertise internationally, Frankie in Australia (www.frankie.com.au) is one Magazine that has mentioned Etsy numerous times before (that's where I found out about it) and would be the perfect target audience.
yaelfran
Hi!
I think I would be interested in CRAFT MAGAZINE and BUST.
And also wallpaper, Vogue.
Thanks!!
magicjelly
Haven't you already been running ads such as the one above & paying 100% of the cost?
What are our fees paying for? I assume part of the huge amount of revenue you receive from fees is to cover your marketing budget? Etsy profits more from media exposure than any individual seller, so I see this kind of promotion as Etsy's responsibility to its fee-paying customers.
No one would set up shop on a site with no traffic, so your job is to promote your site to attract buyers, to attract your customers, the sellers. So now we have to pay twice for the privilege - fees & advertising? You've just received a $27 million shot in the arm & you're expecting sellers to foot the marketing bill above & beyond paying their fees?
All of the magazines you've listed are read by crafters - much more likely to be attracted to Etsy as sellers, not buyers.
I do not want to spend my marketing budget on attracting more competition to the site.
In addition, I do find the layout of the above ad rather uninspired. Print ads have different requirements & design principles than websites.
Sallyent
Isn't Etsy meant to be international - what about the publications outside of US?
How about a spread across other areas that have a lot of sellers - I know Britain, Europe and Australia have lots, am sure there are other areas too.
It's a great idea but it does get a bit tiresome when everything is so US focussed all the time.
(Don't get me wrong, I love Etsy but it seems very easy to forget there are other people here too!)
thymbyldesigns
Sallyent, in order to make print ad in European magazines meaningful, Etsy should first get their name out to European media (i.e., more than the occasional UK hits). Until now, and as far as I can tell, Etsy has done no active press work throughout Europe.
(and I second Magicjelly...)
twiststyle
I would definitely pay those prices for inclusion in BUST, VENUS, CRAFT, or MARY ENGLEBREIT! Please put me on whatever lists you guys are compiling, because I'm totally IN! Thanks
twiststyle
I totally want in and would happily pay those prices for BUSTY, VENUS, CRAFT and MARY ENGLEBREIT. Please put me on the list!
skygirlstyle
Seems like a great idea! I would vote for Mary Englebreit.
I totally agree with dcdesigns and magicjelly, why advertise to other crafters and DIY types.
The focus should be bringing customers to etsy, NOT more sellers!
allisonstrine
I'm a member of a juried site called wholesalecrafts.com. They offer a cooperative advertising program for magazines like Niche and Gift Shop. WSC offers three tiers of options for each artist, a small, medium and large size ad. Each ad has a photo of the artist's work, along with the name, a short description (15 words) and contact info. I find these ads to be a great way to get my name into a national magazine. There's no way I could afford to do a Niche ad on my own. I hope Etsy continues to look in this direction. One caveat is that I recommend a qualified, organized designer be responsible for coordinating the look of the ad -- because of course it will reflect ETSY!
Feel free to contact me for more info!
elisasherejewelry
I'd be interested in ReadyMade and possibly Craft.
Do agree with MagicJelly, though. Etsy also should be doing its own brand awareness advertising. The ads on boingboing and places like that used to do really well when used to advertise the showcase, for instance. I thought that's what the showcase $$ went towards.
Trollflings
I agree with MagicJelly. Go for the buyers/collectors, not the crafters.
Vanity Fair
artjewelrycollection
I'd be interested in Bust and Mary E's Home Companion.
I do think MajicJelly is right. Buyers/collectors are the target for most people selling on Etsy.
ShabbyTexasChick
Home Companion and Bust would be my top picks, in that order, of the magazines you mention. Country Living, Cottage Living, and Southern Living would also be great magazines to advertise in. These target the Southern market, and have a huge number of readers and circulation. I would like to know the cost of a co-op ad in one of these, as they would target a more broad range of people. I think targeting more of the general public, and not so much crafters, could be beneficial to us all. ~Thank you for researching this. I am in!
luluvillage
I am just wondering,
how exp. is Oprah/ Oprah Home?
I think craft type publications are read by crafty folk, who would get inspired, which is great! but may not necessarily become buyers.
Oprah, New Yorker, NYTimes, Vanity Fair,
Country Home
ebbandflo
i'd like to constructively throw my support behind those shouting for advertising aimed at buyers rather than sellers. i really don't want to be subsidising bringing extra competition onto the site once again. please stop advertising to crafters - apart from buying supplies, they are more likely to be able to make the stuff they see than buy it (a personal craft fair observation)
and how about targetting some different demographics? - in my experience at craft shows its the older women who are confident in their own personalities which spend the best. how about considering targetting mags out of the 18-24 age group for a change and see what the results are?
and i'd also like to see some stats before chipping in on another etsy joint venture
SomethingDreadFull
Oh Thank you! I've been so curioius about how to advertise through Etsy in a magazine! That was my first discovery of Etsy. I am interested in the following magazines: Venus, Craft, Bust, Garage, Car Kulture Deluxe.
Due to cost, I must say that I wouldn't be able to support purchasing a spot in Readymade mag at this time. However, I would like to consider it in the near future.
How about considering the following International Magazines:
Frankie - Austrailia
Flare - Canada
Nylon - US
The Face - UK
Brigitte - Germany
Freundin - Germany
Frends - China
Non-no - Japan
Cutie - Japan
Kera - Japan
karenfaulknerart
Would be interested in advertising Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion.
Thanks!
karen
karenfaulknerart
How about Coastal Living? They have a section near the front of the magazine that features handmade items/art for the home.
meringueshop
When you advertise in craft mags, you get sellers.
When you advertise in style magazines, you get buyers.
New buyers are what is needed here asap.
I also support everything MagicJelly said.
bunniesandbows
Awesome ideas!! <3 Would LOVE to participate! I think craftmagazine would be awesome.
katwhitt
marha stewart would be a great choice, as she has had etsy sellers on her show.
TheLolaCollection
ME Home Companion for me.
And I do agree with a lot of other sellers that a lifestyle type mag would be more beneficial.
I'd gladly pay *a lot* more money to have an add in Domino than any of the publications listed.
I personally don't read any mags dedicated to craft, but I do read Domino and Lucky.
I also have bought things I've seen in these mags.
jQjewelrydesigns
Yes! What magicjelly said:
"All of the magazines you've listed are read by crafters - much more likely to be attracted to Etsy as sellers, not buyers.
I do not want to spend my marketing budget on attracting more competition to the site."
It would be a pleasant surprise if this type of ad proved beneficial for the Sellers. But I'm pretty sure it would be very beneficial for Etsy in getting their brand out there - and the Sellers even pay for half!
Getting the word out about Etsy could potentally help out Sellers, but it won't if the ads are run in places that will likely bring more Sellers, not Buyers!
I need to give this a little more thought.
silverdotjewelry
I agree with what's already been said. The magazines you listed attract sellers, not buyers. I think Etsy is already doing very well attracting sellers. I would gladly participate in a coop ad if it attracted buyers.
Have you thought about Daily Candy? That is a great venue and would attract buyers to the site.
I would not participate in any of the magazines you listed above I would rather spend my money promoting and advertising to reach buyers to my store.
Thanks so much for asking. I'm glad you are thinking about this.
bombalurina
"Frankie - Austrailia

Kera - Japan"
I am quoting Something DreadFull because this list frankly rules.
knitsbyteri
Great idea. I'm not sure about the publications since I am not really familiar with any of them but I would be interested if the magazine is the right venue for my stuff. I agree with those comments about getting the Etsy name out to the general public and to buyers as well as sellers.
skiingweaver
Yup, I agree with magicjelly too - I would much prefer to spend my marketing budget on potential buyers, not on recruiting more sellers to the site (really don't see that as my responsibility...). And, as others have said, I'd even pay more for a spot in an ad that targets my buyers - Lucky, Real Simple, Domino, etc.
bombalurina
Something else to think about is the advantage of being an online venue. There's a really poor assumption that there's NO ONE with fashion savvy in second tier cities - in NYC people are bombarded with ads for the alternative the hip and the unusual. Many MANY of my orders come from places where there's probably NOT an indie boutique down the street and those are the people who may be unaware they can access the goods we sell here.
whitefluffydogs
As a buyer-only, I have to say that I do not look at any of those magazines that were listed. Hell, I haven't even HEARD of two of them, and I'm a librarian!
Advertise where peeps like me look, in style magazines, not crafter magazines.
danitashop
Definitively count me in to appear in Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion.
Where do I pay?
danitashop
Definitively count me in to appear in Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion.
Where do I pay?
FreckledPink
I'd love to get involved in these print ads! Especially in Craft, ME Home, and Venus.
redelephant
I love this idea! I do agree that these magazines will maybe attract more sellers than buyers, but they are a good starting point. I would advertise in Venus, Bust and Craft. I'm not very familiar with the ME Home Companion, and Readymade's $450 fee would be a bit too spendy for my budget.
papermenagerie
Great idea! I would definitely be interested in Craft and Bust. Readymade's advertising is not within my budget.
I wish Blueprint was still in print, because it would be a great place to advertise.
Have you considered home decor/design magazines like Domino or Dwell?
papermenagerie
And I wholeheartedly agree with magicjelly and meringueshop.
pensiverabbit
Ditto Magic and Meringue. Please find us some decorating magazines or something.
(just fyi - a full page in Better Homes would cost over $6000 per spot per person so it will have to be something a bit smaller in circulation)
missbrache
I'd be interested in Bust and Venus. I sell clothes so I have no interest in advertising in craft Mags. I like the idea to advertise internationally also, as mentioned above. Most of my sales are from Australia, Canada and the UK, so I'd like to show them love, too.
Thanks, for always making etsy better btw.
PinkPoochDesigns
I also agree with magicjelly. If etsy want to advertise in craft magazines that cater to people that make items. Than I think etsy should be paying 100% of the fees. I understand etsy makes money with the more people that sell their items. So, advertising in that kind of magazine to get more sellers should be 100% of etsy's money. We should not have to foot the bill for that kind of marketing.
CharmStar
I have an ad due out in Venus Zine next month so I'll see if it made a jump in my etsy shop or not. I would vote for BUST personally. They have really great indie ads and I think it really enhances the magazine.
CharmStar
I also agree we would probably rather attract sellers who in my opinion are probably reading Lucky, Martha Stewart, etc. Unfortunately, I believe a one page ad in those magazines cost as much as a luxury car. :(

1. have disposable income
2. are captive in their rooms/plane & bring laptops
3. might be exposed to all sorts of shopping already & are looking for something truly unique.
...and...
4. mags in rooms tend to have lives longer than 1 month
5. may reach more international shoppers

I agree with ebbandflo:
and how about targetting some different demographics? - in my experience at craft shows its the older women who are confident in their own personalities which spend the best.
Any smaller consumer magazine that caters to the buying public as opposed to the crafting public would be something I would try to participate in.
iwantitnow
I like the idea of using regional publications to keep the cost lower at least initially for more people to be able to participate. I'd also be willing to pay for spaces in these.
While the cost of larger more established consumer magazines would be higher with higher potential yields; the ads only have space for relatively few shops, so I wouldn't count them out. There may very well be that many shops who can afford and are ready for that level of exposure.
Plus the benefit of those new customers flowing into other shops once they visit and become repeat customers.
lorimarsha
It seems to me that most of those magazines are geared toward "DIY"ers and not those with discretionary income to spend. If those are the only choices, I think Mary Engelbreit Companion probably has the most diverse readership and national exposure.
bombalurina
No magazine lasts with a readership who does NOT have discretionary income - it's how and where and why they spend. I like the idea of the in-flight magazines and the regional mags.
http://www.citymag.org/
oktak
I agree with many who have pointed out that these magazines are for crafters, and we should be trying to reach buyers. Real Simple, Martha Stewart Living, Domino, Cookie would be great - but I assume prices are high.
I am also a little concerned with the "first-come-first-serve" policy. Please don't shoot me for saying this, but while there are a billion awesome items on Etsy, there are a billion not-so-awesome items here too. What if the spots were dominated by the latter? Or what if the 30+ items shown in the ad did not look good together - in other words, what if the ad looked terrible as a whole? Do we really want a hodge podge of just any items? It just seems to me that a co-op ad that lacks coherence wouldn't be very effective.
ViragoCreations
Bust magazine for my handmade items. The other magazines are targeted towards other crafters, and appropriate for my Supply items.
LASdesigns
i'ma zine junkie.
readymade belongs to martha sterwart hence the $$ price tag.
I get Home Companion. a good variety of both indie and can be a little too foo foo.
They do give attention to the artist as a reader. I like it.
Bust is great.
Craft is great.
never heard of Venus--guess i'm not such a junkie as I thought ;)
mayvar
I would definitely be interested in Craft or Mary Engelbreit. Bust is a maybe for my products - not sure it is the right target.
VintageBlue
I would be interested if the focus was on advertising in magazines that werent craft-focused. Women's fashion magazines would be great instead of Craft. Dont get me wrong, I love Craft but you're just advertising towards more crafters.
JenniferRydinDesigns
I would be interested in Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion. Also more fashion forward magazines would be fantastic as well.
AllInStitches
I'd be interested in Bust and Venus, and perhaps in the other crafter zines for my supplies shop.
AllInStitches
Oh, and there are so many Etsy sellers who sell fantastic baby and kid items that it would be great to add some magazines targeting the mom or grandma demographic.
jelvehdesigns
I like all kinds of cool mags, I think my interest would be based most on how much I can spend per ad, and that would be the $25 to $75 range...
thanks for this oppertunity
theHouseOfWorn
to be clear, Bust, Venus and Mary's magazine's are NOT CRAFTER magazines.
boopalinabebe
The Etsy Cooperative Advertising Pilot Program sounds like an amazing opportunity to network and promote! Boopalina & Bebe would definitely jump at the chance to participate. We'd consider advertising in the following publications: 1]Craft, 2]Bust, & 3]Home Companion.
katiedoodah
As a buyer only and not a crafter, I don't read any of those magazines. So I would say focus more on mags that would attract buyers who like unique and handmade versus people who are already into craftinga and would most likely set up shop and compete with those who paid for the ad.
Currently I have lots of mag subscriptions including Wired, Real Simple, Allure, Newsweek (yeah I know), Us Weekly and People and a few others. The closest to any type of craft mag I read is Real Simple and that was only because I received 6 issues free :)
stilettoheights
I would DEF be interested and I would like Venus, or Bust...
another magazine you might want to consider is Victorian Bliss...or some of the other home design magazines.
amyd
venus is my first choice and bust second. venus reminds me of bust "back in the day". and i understand why folks are saying that those are magazines crafters read rather than ones that people read to purchase things. however, i think they are geared towards readers who understand the value of handmade over the GAP.
SapphireChild
Currently my advertising budget is pretty low, so Venus is my most likely buy at this time. However, I'm not sure their style meshes well with my current style, so I will probably skip it until one of us had a shift. I will keep an eye on the program though, and at some point there might be a better opportunity for me. Put me down as "interested" and "thankful". :)
esdesigns
I might be interested if there were some more choices around the $25 range, but I think I might be more likely to participate in an online ad. Is it possible for that to work cooperatively? I also think you might need to have shops apply for this- to make sure they're following the TOU and look ok before approving them for ads. (Might be a good idea for Showcases too.)
KillTaupe
This is a great idea. I would do Venus, Craft or Bust magazines.
cinderelish
I would be interested in any of the first 4. I think $100 would be the max I could afford to spend. Can't wait to hear more.
I agree that shops should probably be screened. I would hate for resellers to sneek in.
elliebelly
i'm interested in craft. what about martha stewart? she might even consider doing a profile feature on etsy if approached the right way!
paperstories
Readymade. (i have advertised there before plus it is where i found out about etsy. it has a very large readership as well....)
What about Domino mag as well?
ebbandflo
I'd like to add in LouLou for Canadian women buyers and Eve in the UK
children's items are best marketed in some of the parenting mags worldwide
how about press releases/adverts to the Style sections of regional newspapers outside US
and a big yes to the in flight mags - anything that can boost sellers towards an expat market. at christmas and birthdays finding gifts to send back to the 'old country' is potentially tricky - sites like Etsy can provide the answer, esp with a better shop local feature
ATDesigns
Count me in. Seems lots have already aired the idea that the target audience isn't the already converted but folks who are trendy and appreciate hand crafted and unique items. I'd jump on board for almost anything though, up to $100 a pop.
dbabcock
I would be interested in Craft Magazine. Not familiar with the others, but will check them out. Great idea.
CommunistChicken
I would definitely be interested in venus and craft and if my business improves sometime soon the more expensive choices as well.
Have you looked into side banners on popular websites, or any kind of advertising online?
cloud9designstudio
Great idea! I'd be interested in advertising in a few of those.
TheIntuitiveGarden
I would be willing to pay more for an ad in a shopping/style related magazine.
Also, I am wondering if the Etsy sellers featured in the Craft magazine ad have experienced an increase in sales.
Knitsteel
I'm interested in the Mary E. magazine opportunity. I'd definitely like the Readymade Magazine ad, but it would depend on my budget at the time it's offered.
OpulentOddities
Being featured in BUST was an awesome opportunity for me, and I would definitely do it again.
Venus Zine looks badass too. I haven't seen it before, and I may even order a subscription!
BklynMoMos
Bust magazine seems like the perfect place for me and my wares!
theghostfactory
craft is an expensive mag- venus & bust would probably reach a much broader range (albeit mostly female) customers.
my vote is venus, bust, craft.
asundrynotion
magicjelly said it well: target buyers, not more sellers. Also agree with point that Etsy just received a investment. Surely Etsy has earmarked some of it for marketing. I'd be interested in Domino or Lucky, not mags geared to crafters.
ValerieGalloway
My first choice would be Bust-
seems like a great opportunity.
PreciousMeshes
BUST is my favorite but I have a feeling that more of its readers already know about Etsy than those of a more mainstream mag like Engelbreit. For individual shops it would be great, though. I would consider a big campaign like this at an affordable price, although it almost makes me afraid of getting too many orders!
prettybird20
I am for Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion but any of the magazines with a feee under $100 would be good with me.
threebunniesyarnco
What an extraordianry idea! I find it exhilerating to know that you are not just here for the handmade buyers and sellers, but you are evolving for our benefit. I am interested in Bust, Craft and Mary Engelbreit's magazines and would certainly consider any others added to the short list. Looking forward to see how this progresses!
hjcompton270
For my market, I would love Home Companion magazine as I would be seen by my target market.
neawear
Gosh! Many comments on this one!!
For Canadians, consider Wish Magazine! http://www.wish.ca/
:)
RosannaElizabeth
I agree with a few other comments about gearing it towards the general public, not to other crafty people who would just open their own shop. That's where etsy should spend their own money, not ours.
What about magazines in different countries? I'm from Australia and not familiar with any of those magazines
Taking all this into consideration, I would rather spend my money advertising locally rather than in magazines geared towards people who may already make what I make.
pawandclawdesigns
it may be that i live in a small town with no news stand; just a few book stores, but i have never heard of ANY of those publications.
i have no opinion at this time about print advertising ;)
LampworkDiva
Venus, Craft and Bust.
I think ME Home Companion is geared toward a specific style that doesn't fit Etsy's overall image.
I like the idea of regional mags - it's worth a try! :-)
Kayraffla
That is a wonderful idea, and very generous of etsy to go in half. I would definately go for it!
ArtifactBingo
I think Craft magazine and Readymade are the best on the list. But I would also go for pubs like Dwell, Martha Stewart Living, Oprah, Fast Company, Blueprint. And I'd even suggest some art related magazines, such as Communication Arts, Step, and Print. There you might find more members as well as customers.
threemusesart
I'd go for Venus or Bust, and would be interested in other co-op opportunities, either locally, or in other mags with a broader base.
JessicaPoundstone
Fantastic idea. My first choice would be the Mary Engelbreit magazine. I had a product featured in their "This We Like" section, and had a pretty amazing response. Thanks!
creativeking
I think this is a great opportunity! I would like the Engelbreit mag.
Thanks!
CharmingDarling
I'd be very interested in advertising in ME Home Companion.
Thanks!
CharmingDarling
LampworkDiva says:
I think ME Home Companion is geared toward a specific style that doesn't fit Etsy's overall image.
------
If you're referring to the mod, edgy set on Etsy, perhaps...but there are many of us who have quality products on Etsy that don't fit that image.
I don't think that Etsy should have a "product image". It should be all inclusive, and product images change over time as styles change.
gypsycaster
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Venus magazine and everything they stand for!!! Their support of women in the arts and in the crafts industry is truly inspirational. They have already mentioned and features well known ETSY sellers like Spidercamp and I think it would be fantastic to expand upon that relationship.
I'm in!!!!!!!!
theresamink
I'm not very familiar with any of these magazines but would definitely be willing to spent the $$ to advertise both of my shops.
chickrocks
I'd be interested in Bust Magazine: Full page, 30 Spots, $100 each
stonz
I do think that the items shown in the ads should be appropriate for the magazine. Wedding items in a Bride mag, baby & kid items in a parenting/child mag...my SToNZ would be on a Vegetarian Mag or Coastal Living or Travel & Leisure, Organic Nature stuff, Science. Some folks' work would be better in decor mags. Just think of the possibilities here! We want to reach BUYERS not just crafters!
PolkaDotsAndPaisley
Would be interested in Venus Zine, or any magazine we could get a spot for $50 or less. I think this is a great idea to spread the word about Etsy!
JamieNoel
Awesome advertising plan. Please ignore all the whiners in the forums who say Etsy doesn't do enough to promote the site. This is a great idea and i would be interested in both Bust magazine and Mary Englbright Home Companion. (sorry, I know I butchered her last name.)
winemakerssister
Based on the prices quoted, I would be very interested in "Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion" and possibly "Craft."
I'd be interested in concentrating more on publications geared toward shoppers (general public), rather than crafters.
If you go ahead with this feel free to sign me for for MEHC on the spot! I think it's the perfect audience for my work.
naiad
All but ready made for me - a little too pricy at this point in my career! Thanks for including me in the Craft spread! I definitely saw sales increase - not sure if it was the mag or just the holidays but I would be willing to try another mag ad to see!
Thanks!
wineglassbotique
Great idea! I would participate in all except Ready Made. Too expensive for me at this point.
sweetwatervintage
Would definitely advertise in Venus Zine and Bust Mag...also would love to collaborate with local indie mags in various cities it's just hard to know which are reputable if you've never lived in that city.
ArtistHowToDOTcom
Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion
But open to anything that hits my customer demographic!
GuerillaEmbroidery
Craft please. how about british magazines as well like:
selvedge
embroidery
craft and design?
argentium1
I missed the chance to get into the Craft co-op. What about taking out a larger ad space? If you add $5 onto the cost (I really have not idea what the cost would be)and take out a 4 or 6 page ad. The impact would be larger and I would think that you would get a better deal. Mostly, more of us could get in on the deal.
baconsquarefarm
Great ideas, marketing 101 at it's best~love it. I'm game for home companion and others as well can't remember all there names now, but wish to be included. These are exciting times watching Etsy grow~!
RavenX
Yay to what Miss MagicJelly says...
* * *
If I were to spend the money, I'd rather target magazines reaching more buyers rather than other crafters/competition.
And, I agree that the ad example shown isn't very appealing. There are many other ways to creatively display items.
xxx
Industryjewelry
I would jump at the opportunity to advertise in Venus and especially Bust. It was an ad in the back of Bust that led me to Etsy in the first place!
opusemporium
Great idea! I would love to participate. Prefer Home Companion and would consider all others except Readymade (due to cost).
KCamilleri
You guys are so clever. I'd be willing to participate in one of any except Ready Made.
Thankyou.
ScribbleNation
Great idea! I would be most likely to participate in Craft or Bust, but I think Readymade would be a great option for some of the heavier hitters on here - like furniture makers.
CherylStrait
I think this is a great idea, I may have missed this information but my question is how would we sign up to participate?
CherylStrait
My Vote--------->
Venus Zine: Full page, 30 spots, $25 each
Craft Magazine: 2-page spread, 36 Spots, $70 each
Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion: Full page, 30 Spots, $75 each
mrscharlotte1
I love the idea. I am not familiar with any of the magazines but I would participate in any of them.
Charlotte
CassandraRussell
My vote would definitely be for:
Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion: Full page, 30 Spots, $75 each
GlamourAndGlow
I would definetly do Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion: Full page, 30 Spots, $75 each. I agree that Craft would not attract as many "buyers" as it would "sellers". Although any publication would be better than nothing!:) Count me in!
nancyslevin
I would be interested in buying into Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion.. I have long been inspired by the artists, that she features every month in her magazine...AS for other publications, have you considered some of the regional magazines or small local publications in larger metropolitan areas... Denver, Chicago, Seattle, I could help research this if needed. Or how about some lesser known music magazines. I am so happy to be a part of the Etsy story, I hope it continues to be a catalyst for change in the young and older consumers of America.
JaneGallagher
a fanstatic idea. I'd go with anything but also love the idea mentioned above about UK based publications too.
thank you.
straythreads
great idea. I think you need to target 'the loves hand made but doesn't have the aptitude or inclination to make it themselves' audience. maybe decorating magazines like House Beautiful, Traditonal Home, Cottage Living, Victoria, Victorian Living or life style magazines targeted at different geographic ares. maybe some of these magazines would even do an article.
hannahmade
Very exciting!...I'd love to be in either Craft or Bust! Thanks
allearringsandmore
really like the idea of being in Craft magazine. - Hope it happens
Entice101
I want BUST; Readymade, Vine are not really my market audience, I am on a tight advertising budget, $450 is out of my reach, I would pay $100 for the right demographic audience
piedras
What are the prices to advertise in the in-flight mags of the airlines? Now there's an audience often looking desperately for something interesting. I pay attention to everything on every page, where often I tune out ads. And if you are on a plane, there's a good chance you A. have a computer, and B. have a little income to spare.
bluecitrusart
great idea! i'd buy in venus, bust and would love others, but not sure if they
havr my target demografic..
Maryjanesattic
I would like to participate in any of the publications but I have preferences for:
Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion
Bust Magazine
Thanks so much for offering this to us!
bunsonburner
Love Readymade. I worked for anthropologie (urban outfitters inc) and we used that magazine for tons of ideas in display. If a well respected corporate venue for fashion and home products looks at Readymade for inspiration, then i think "buy handmade" would soar!
suzanneartist
I'd pay to be in MARY ENGLEBREIT'S magazine.
I'd also pay to be in SOUTHERN LIVING magazine.
PaintedMemoriesByRos
I would be willing to pay for an ad in any of the mentioned magazines. Right now Readymade is a little much for my budget.
emcisaac
I am interested in this co-op opportunity, I was wondering if you had any data regarding sales generation from the ads that Etsy has done in the past, and if so where I could read that information.
Depending on slots available please consider me for one of the following I've listed my preference order, but honestly I'm pleased just to have the opportunity!! Thanks
1. Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion
2. Ready Made Magazine
3. Venus Zine
4. Craft Magazine
5. Bust Magazine
MariposaWhispers
Hi,
I think this could be a wonderful opportunity and I am thankful to Etsy for considering this possible type of cooperative advertisment. I too would like to know if Etsy has been able to determine if past advertisement led to a significant increase in sales. That being the case I would be interested in participting. I am fairly new to Etsy and therefore, will not be in a financial position to engage in multiple listings higher than $75. However, I would be interested in listing as follows:
1. Venus Zine
2. Craft Magazine
3. Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion
Again, Thank you I look forward to hearing back!
Mariposa Whispers
kgcrafts
We would be very interested in an advertisement in ME Home Companion...Is this comment enough to put me on a list of some kind, or is there something else I need to do? Thanks, Katie Galbraith
skgart
I would really be interested in ReadyMade and Bust.
Any word about Readymade?
angelstuff
I think etsy would market itself better by doing its own non-coop ads. The ads would look better and might make people curious about etsy. The coop ad above lacks focus; if I didn't know what it was for, it wouldn't make sense to me.
SimplyTaylored
Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion would be of interest to me!
ShoozieShoes
I think a lot of us would be willing to pay $25 for the opportunity to advertise in print, almost regardless of which magazine it is. But I would like to reach people outside the crafting community - we already have a lot of exposure to each other here on etsy. I'd like to reach people who don't think they can make what I make! How about fashion magazines for those who make clothing, shoes, and jewelery; Parenting magazines for those who make Baby/Kids items, and so on. If they are affordable at all, of course ;-)
wrightmade
I think BUST would be the best one to try "outside the box" for my 'scopes. Count me in.
olivehuedesigns
Just spotted this. I agree with most of the posts: this is a great opportunity. Other mags I think would be good would be Marie Claire and Domino.
FeltzEtc
Just getting into the advertising relm. I agree with ShoozieShoes... wouldn't mind actually paying upto $100 but would love to reach more of the "buying" audience and not the "crafting" audience. How do we hear back about this?
samyol2000
I'll like to join the idea and more if the advertising go to potential buyers, we are already crafters.
faeriewhale
I've never seen any of these magazines in Canada; although, I've heard of bust. Will magazines from other countries, and possibly those written in other languages be considered?
shellieartist
I would love to hear any results of those who have participated in the past. I can never seem to be quick enough to get a spot in any of them but I would love to see if it helped bring in traffic.
bijougirldesigns
I would love to participate in the Vesus zine! This really is a good idea!
SandisShellscapes
I have seen the ads in Mary Engebreits Home Companion and
wondered who decides who gets in them - I would LOVE to
participate - have to admit I have never seen any of the other mags but will be checking them out.
goodjewelry
I think folks who read Mary Engelbreits Home Companion would be good potential buyers. I would love to participate in that one....once I get my shop up and running. :)
priscillamae
I would be very interested in both Home Companion and Craft but what about some of the home design magazines as well. We would love to have Etsy mentioned in more magazines in Canada and with the depressed financial environment, buying handmade makes wonderful sense now. Let's turn this downturn around. How about OPRAH Magazine? Good buys section?
KimmareeJewelree
I would love any of those just to get exposure. Iam new to etsy and would love any advertising that I could get. I have zero sales and need anything to boost my site.
Just hope that when the time comes I have a chance to get into the magazine.
Thanks for asking.
SusanCalvert
I'm interested. I could not afford ReadyMade at this time but the others look good. What about "Wired", "Esquire" "GQ", "Real Simple" and "Oprah" magazines?
3eyedneema
i also think it's a good idea to market outside the crafting community.
DancingHorseStudio1
I agree with dazeychick,it is much better idea to target audiences who would purchase these goods versus making their own.
NitaMaesGarden
Hi! I am one of the new ones. I hadn't heard about Etsy until I saw a small site comment about it in WOMEN'S WORLD back in the Autumn. So how about gearing ads with women's magazines? Women are always looking for something new and exciting. Etsians have it! :)
There are so many various ideas there that would fit so many of our crafts.
SillyDolphinsJewelry
I'd love to see more womans magazines that would help target clothing/fashion/gift items. Of course, I sell jewelry, so that might be a kind of well duh, statement! :D
After all, most of us are not trying to sell people info on how to make the items we make; we're trying to sell the items we make.
moondogcottage
I think these new ads in magazines are AWESOME! I would definately be interested in Home Companion and Craft Magazine. Sign me up! I couldn't believe how reasonable the rates would be to us. Cloth Paper Scissors is another really neat magazine like Somerset that might be good to advertise in. Victoria and Country Living would be good also if they're reasonable.
JewelrySensations
What a great idea! But I would love to see a few fashion magazines in this. I make jewelry and it is an accessory so to target the right buyer who loves clothes and accessories, this is the way to go I think. Craft magazines are purchased by crafters so that wouldn't promote sales would it? I would certainly pay $25 to be in on this project..
monbonbon
Venus, Craft & Mary E. - these are in no particular order... I saw one ine Mary E. already ... almost flipped out... I want in!
Thank you...
Rebecca
www.monbonbon.etsy.com
ChartreuseButterfly
This is a great idea. The $25 is the one in my budget but the craft one would be more compatible to my jewelry line. What about featuring an ad in some of the beading mags for some of the jewelry makers?
itspamdemonium
I'm very interested in participating in your co-op advertising. Maybe some of the more expensive ad space could feature just the banners and/or avatar so more could be listed therefore more exposure for less money. Just an idea! I'm new so I'm looking for ways to promote and get exposure. Thanx!
akirby
This is an awesome idea for advertisement. My vote is on Bust, and would definitely be interested in purchasing a spot!
GoodyToo
I think any opportunity to promote our businesses nationally is a great idea. The only one I'm familiar with is Mary E Home Companion. I'd be in favor of ME, Craft, or Venus as the income from my shop does not afford me the higher priced spots. Thank you for the opportunity!
JamieNoel
Yes to all, especially Mary E.Home Companion. I participated in quite a few of the co op ads last year and Mary E. was by far the most succesful for my shop. Note: The month my ads ran I offered customers a free gift with their order if they e mailed and told me how they discovered my shop. I put this note on my Etsy order message so it only went to those who had made a purchase. It was a great way to find out what forms of advertising were working. Many mentioned Mary E.
SusanFaye
I would be interested most in ME Home Companion and Craft--they are in the best price range and the right target audience... Thanks
ImagineMDD
This is a great idea. Thanks for doing it. I agree about being in less crafty magazines and more of those geared toward the general public. I don't know of one specifically, but how about some bridal magazine? I'd probably get on board there. Some other occasion magazine or one targeted to a specific audience instead of crafters since I won't be selling a lot of supplies.
southerngirls
I would definately be interested. What a great idea. Probably I would be interested in ME Home Companion and Craft. This would be so helpful to all.
artworksbycathyj
Women in their 40's and up are the women who have the to money to spend. I see this at every art fair that I do. Many (but not all) of the younger gals love what they see but just don't have the means to buy. Targeting women in their 20s won't help me.
I also would be much more inclined to advertise outside the craft magazine market. What about In Style? Women who purchase fashion magazines are more inclined to see the add and think about purchasing my jewelry. Women looking at a craft magazine are more interested in ideas for making their own jewelry.
dahlilafound
ReadyMade--if it weren't so expensive. Craft & maybe Bust. I don't know Venus.
Can vintage get in on this too? Or just handmade? I've got both.
thanks!
PoppyJoy
Most of these sound good:
*ReadyMade
*Craft
*VeniusZine
*Bust
Thanks,
PoppyJoy
Heartfulart
Yes for both of these because of the price (which I noticed went up $20 already).
Craft magazine
Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion
Thank you.
P.S. I didn't see a listing under Showcases. The Q&A said to sign up the same way. ???
FireDancersGlass
I see a lot of members do not recognize these magazines, sorry to say "I don't either".
How about American Craft?
Personally, for my hand blown glass sinks I would like to advertise in Dwell or other major interior design magazines.
I believe the price of an inside cover full page ad in Dwell is about $34,000, which is about 1/3 the price of "Lucky" which I've never even heard of.
my 2 cents,
Glenn
simplypuresoycandles
i would love to be included just as long as its not very expensive...
ItsInTheHANDBag
Count me in! I'm a newbie seller, and this is a great opportunity.
I can afford up to the 100 dollarish selections.....Thanks ETSY
madlight13
I would absolutely love to participate in an ad.
Bust would be my #1 choice!
simpledream2
I would be interested in Bust, Mary Engelbreits and Venus zine. I would be wary of Craft as that could possibly bring many copy cats. What about magazines that are geared towards the general population (buyers) and not crafters? Ready made is not within my budget, at this time.
sherrysgarden
I'm very interested in Mary Engelbreits. I'm sure they have a very large circulation. How about a home and garden type mag???
JensJewellery
Is it too late to say yes... Bust yes...
Jenni - Australia.....
It would be nice though to have spots reserved for those of us when it's 2am in the morning that they go on sale!
agardenrose
I recently caught the 2 page ad in House Beautiful. It was great for home decor art.
thetrendytot
yikes! Who is your media buyer? You really shouldn't be paying that much for space in those mags. Love the co-op program though, great idea!
variation
I'd be interested in Venus or Craft (is Craft still doing a print publication?)
AndreaWagnerDesigns
I think is fantastic to have the opportunity to be in an ad, for me I would be interested in Venus Zine (affordable) and Craft Magazine (thou expensive).
Thank you.
Andrea W.
littlealouette
yep- all of em!
Martha Stewart too?
and baby mags? KIWI?
xoxo love it!
celebrationinclay
Engelbreit, yes! A lovely magazine. And how about Vogue Knitting for all the fiber artists? Lapidary Journal is great for beaders of all kinds. My two cents... Thanks for asking us!
patysclay
I think the idea is great but I would like to have another options such as martha stewart and brides magazines too.
EelKat
I'm just setting up my Etsy shop (I've sold stuff elsewhere but this'll be my first time on Etsy). I like this idea, and if you are still doing it in the winter season of 2009, I'll be signing on for this. I vote for all of the magazines listed, plus I think Oprah's and Martha Stewarts would be good choices to consider.

oh, I had a thought, what about "local" magazines? only in the local magazines only Etsy crafters living in the local area of the magazine would be able to add their listing.
Say like DownEast Magazine which is all about Maine, and is loaded with full pages adds featuring arts and crafts by Maine craftsmen. You could offer a listing in a full page ad in DownEast Magazine, but it would have the requirement that only Etsy sellers living in Maine would be eligible to be included in the ad.
Each state has a regional magazine like that, so you could offer that option for each of the 50 states.
Also, what about niching the ads; say an ad on Lapindry Journal would only list Etsy sellers who make lampwork beads and such, while and ad in DollReader would feature only Etsy sellers who make dolls, and so on and so forth.
I think that by branching out to regional and niche markets like this, that it would help promote better sales because it would be pinpointing the target just to those people interested in that area.
