FAQ
1. What is the Cooperative Advertising Program?
- By purchasing a spot in a Cooperative Advertising Program, Etsy sellers can show off their items in an Etsy-branded magazine advertisement, reach new buyers, and help boost their sales and shop awareness. Print ads in popular magazines are often priced out of reach of small entrepreneurs. Etsy is able to purchase larger ads for more impact, and let sellers buy into the ads.
2. How does it work?
- Etsy reduces costs to sellers by subsidizing the ads. We pay half of the cost. The cost to you is the remaining amount, divided by the number of spots for sale.
- Sellers get to display one image of an item from their shop, its price, its main category and their shop name. The appearance of the ad is similar to our homepage. Click here for an example.
3. How do I purchase a spot?
- 1: Go to the Showcase Gateway.
- 2: Choose "Cooperative Ads - Bust Magazine October/November Showcase." There will only be one date to choose from.
- 3: Hit the "Purchase" button. The fee will be added to your normal Etsy bill.
*Note: The items that appear in the Showcase section of "Your Etsy" will not affect this purchase. The item photo that you send in via email to adam@etsy.com will be what appears in the ad. There is no online Showcase associated with this purchase!
**Also note: If your shop is currently in Vacation Mode, you will not be able to purchase a spot. You must turn Vacation Mode off in order to participate.
4. What do I do next?
- You will receive an email from Adam (adam@etsy.com) with details, and we will need the following from you:
- Your shop name.
- The price of the item.
- The main category that the item is listed under.
- A high-resolution photograph of your item (300 dpi).
- If you need help with photo issues, please ask, and Adam will send you detailed instructions. If you already have a photo that you like, great! If not, check out some of our photography tips.
- We will need your image by 7:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 to give us time to lay out the ad and meet our deadline.
5. How many spots can I reserve?
- You can purchase one spot per advertisement.
6. Can I cancel a spot after I've made a reservation? Is the fee refunded?
- We will only cancel and refund spots under very special circumstances. Deciding you are no longer interested in your spot does not count. If you feel like you really have a valid case please email adam@etsy.com.
7. How do I know if the current Cooperative Ad is right for me?
- Do some research! We'll provide helpful info for each ad as it becomes available (see above). It may be helpful to visit your local bookstore or newsstand to see if they carry the magazine. Remember, there will be more of these Cooperative Advertising opportunities available in the future. If you don't feel like this magazine is perfect for you, there will be other opportunities...
See our posts on upcoming Showcase opportunities as well!

Interesting!
Did anyone do this before and had a good experience that they wanna share?
hellome
I would so love to do this. I did a Venus ad last year and it was great!
ParadiseBodyShop
Great idea - but where does Bust mainly circulate? The US, or other countries?
LittleWrenPottery
Bust is mainly US so far as Im aware but you can subscribe which of course means it can go out to other places.
SpringtreeRoad
wow! that looks like a great opportunity. i look forward to seeing how this works for etsy sellers.
ParadiseBodyShop
LittleWrenPottery, thanks for the info! This will be in the back of my mind all day...

My items are more whimsical than BUST-y (young, hip and cutting edge)--Any prospects in the near future for ads in other magazines?
onecreativegirl
excited to see my ad in the august issue- hoping it does well so i can sign on to additional ads- thank you for offering coop ads!
nomadcraftsetc
I think it would be worth the money, but don't have the money...I am excited to see how it goes!
matsudabunch
I did Bust last year. I had one sale as a result. Their readers are just not my customer. I am glad I tried it.
I miss having ads in Mary Englebreit's Home Companion. Those readers were my customers!

WOW ~~ I love BUST -- they are completely the way to go !! I also LOVE all the featured items ;)
worksofwhimsy
This is great, but BUST is not my target market either. How about doing ads in other publications that cater to an older, family oriented demographic? Real Simple would be great. They even recommended Etsy in the August issue. Please, please consider it!
PrimaryRedux
worksofwhimsy-you had a good idea, made me think of Martha Stewart magazine-I think that would be a good etsy add spot. But I do think Bust is m style to. But not gonna go for it.
babook
Sooooooooooooooo lovely pick of all : )
my shop also lovely too !!
Might, you should to see http://www.babook.etsy.com/
breadandroses
Real Simple & others sound like a great idea for both this BreadandRoses and my BreadandRoses2 shops. Would like to see statistics, sales generated from previous Bust, Mary Englebreit (now defunct?), et al, ads.

This is a great opportunity. Thanks for the hard work it takes to put this kind of promotion together. I love drakeidaho966's baby beanie. Beautiful work!

For those of you who asked, I did one of the first BUST coop ads and thought it was successful. You also get exposure to other magazine editors. My work was highlighted elsewhere from that ad. You can convo me if you have questions.
Here's what the ad looks like:

I am so tempted, but money is a definite issue and I am not sure this is my market. I will continue to ponder.
ClaudiaLord
I'd like to see a little more variety in the advertising venues.
OwlandMouse
what a great idea! can't wait to read that issue and see all the ads!
patspottery
I like the idea, but the $ are a lot for a small spot in one issue of a mag that caters to fashion, not art or pottery. Don't think it is for me, but might change my mind.
time2cre8
I did it last time (the theme was music, and I advertised my Piano Man cuff). Sadly, I didn't receive any noticeable extra traffic and no sales. $90 down the tubes. :-(
tldgrainwear
It looks like a very interesting oportunity...I'll definitely consider it...luv!
SweetPeaFabrications
Would love to get in! Happen to be off on Thursday (from the day job) but only 30 spots!
LovMely
Super cool! I love BUST Magazine. I just think i might try to grab a spot.
SweetPeaFabrications
Am I crazy or is it 1:07 pm ET on Thursday July 30? Where is the Showcase for sale?
NicolaYoonDesign
I'm having the same problem as well SweatPeaFabrications
SweetPeaFabrications
I emailed Adam- very frustrating- first time I had a day off when I wanted to purchase this!
jalexstudios
What's going on with this. I have been at my computer waiting for this to open up!!!
ellecools

thanks etsy admin for setting up such an opportunity for Etsy sellers. I'd be interested to hear from sellers who have participate in these cooperative advertisements in the past and how it helped their business.
XOHandworks
If the ads were accidentally posted (& sold) at 12:00 EST, why did it take over 2 hours to let us know?
With the history of mix-ups regarding the release of these cooperative ads, shouldn't someone be watching at the appropriate time to make sure it goes as planned? With the unknown numbers of sellers changing their day to be at their computer at the right time, it seems like there could be one person at Etsy at their computer to see that all is well.
I'll be at an art fair next Weds, so will be unable to try again at the re-scheduled time :(
megalunostudio
Thank you so much, Etsy, for a super opportunity! I'm off to the library to see if BUST fits my target market. I really hope so!
ellecools
I agree. Considering how many people rearrange their lives and work schedules to be there just for the chance at this opportunity, I was really surprised there was not also an admin there~
UglyBaby
Perhaps an alarm of some kind is in order. I know I always forget my laundry unless I set a timer on the stove....giggle.
SylviaAnderson
I too miss the Mary Engelbright AD's! I would love to see a co-op AD in Martha Stewart's Living, Romantic Homes, Country Living, or even Better Homes and Gardens....Bust is not a fit for my product line either.
