Every year, January is an interesting month at Etsy: we know that sales will be down when compared to the prior month, December, but listings will go up, as folks re-stock their shops after the holiday season. We also pay very close attention to how sales change from week-to-week. As we approach Valentine’s Day we expect the last week of January to exceed the first.
We were pleased with January results: the numbers exceeded our expectations in these difficult economic times.
The stats:
- $9.9 million of goods were sold; roughly 23% below December's sales figure (sales for the last full week of January represented a 9.3% increase above the first full week of January).
- That represents 683,369 items sold for the month, a 16.2% decrease from December's stats.
- 1,203,417 million new items were listed in January, up from 1,098,644 items or 9.2% vs. December.
- 138,000 new members joined the Etsy community, 16.3% below December's record number of new members.
- 443,468,017 page views were recorded on the site, an 8.1% increase compared to December.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Etsy community in January!

Interesting! A site wide breakdown of sales by category in both dollars & percentage is something I've wondered about, esp. children's goods, would be helpful. Where is that posted?
Snowberrylime
Very interesting to hear, and cute picks in the items. :)
Thanks!
Ryanplz
i love the statistics.
i'm a statistics kind of guy. ;D
yeah. very interesting! thanks. :)
nfall2rt
great info, thanks! It's good to know people are actually still shopping in January:)
graceartandantiques
would be great to see comparisons from the same month last year...like on my electric bill
ShySiren
That's overall fantastic news! I know I didn't have TIME to shop in December, so I am happy to have contributed to several of those January sales --- got a few items that were on my Wish List! THANKS, ETSY!
kitandcaboodleshop
Thanks for the stats. I see that etsy is gaining in popularity. I'm glad that I'm part of the family.
BabbidgePatch
Great Stats ~ every reason to laugh like the cute little one in knittles pic :)
sallymandy
Thanks for the article. So glad Etsy's doing well in light of the economy. I have a new blog and I've been promoting items off Etsy. Is it okay to put the link here? If not, sorry.
ShinyAdornments
So average price of items sold was $14.49? How does this compare to previous months?
ShinyAdornments
Aha, never mind. I'll check out the previous months posts and do a bit of number crunching.
lauradeponte
wow im impressed! especially how many newbies sign up each month!
eraseandrepeat
Thanks for sharing the figures! Glad to know people are still buying :)
PetitPlat
yup true, I sold fairly good this month and I'm still doing although I'm away :D
QuercusSilver
It's been a good month and a great finish to my first year. i've loved every minute.
happywhosits
I've been waiting to see the Jan stats. Not as bad as I expected, which is really great news. Our January was better in both numbers of sales and total dollars than Jan 2008, but a bit less in dollars than Jan 2007.
Eileen...
germandolls
Actually my sales were up. Better than December. It just shows you never know. I had a really crazy month...
piperewan
my january sales were 5x my december, and up nearly 90% from last year (and i was featured seller on the 31st last year). i am very interested in site-wide stats, but any individual's sales may not necessarily fall in line with the site as a whole. i do love reading about them though!
JeanieBeeandCompany
Thanks so much for this info. It helps to know the overall stats.
KellesKitchen
I am surprised to see how close sales were to December, actually. It's very nice to see this breakdown, thank you!
AutumnLeavesJewelry
thanks! I had a fantastic month...i love all these pics you guys choose for the articles, loving LisasLovlies work!
theLittleOak
Thanks for the update. It's great to hear that people are still buying.
GoldenPearArtStudio
Thank you for posting this on the admin forum. As a newbe I didn't know you offered this information. This is fantastic!
thebeadingtree
Thanks for the stats! I would also like to see the 01/08 stats compared to the 01/09 stats. :)
smacshop
I like these. May I ask..."new members joining the community"...
Is a reseller who opens up a shop every weekend under a new name counted as "+1" each time? {I am not trying to be facetious, sarcastic, or start any kind of back-and-forth, please, I just want to know; no judgement is implied.)
WarmHugsCornBags
Love the interesting data. Has anyone created a spreadsheet so you could view the data as a whole without going to each individual article?
KalliopeGifts
Good to know, thanks! Encouraging news, considering the economy.
shopnap
wow, I'm one of the new January joiners, I had no idea there was so much going on
bluebirdsandblossoms
Thanks for sharing the stats. Good to see new people joining Etsy.
thepairabirds
interesting...are those page views unique views? Or, does that include returning vistors?
OneClayBead
Thanks- it is so helpful to know how the site is doing. Congrats on a success story overall.
FoundVintageStyle
this very good to know... my sales have certainly gotten stronger every week!
Hende
Thanks for the stats. It's interesting to know what the larger context is. I have the feeling that those of us in the handmade community, being kind of on the margins of official economic life, in some ways can escape some of the economic trends . . . at least the nasty ones. I guess I was surprised at the Jan. sales since I though no one would be interested in shopping after the crush of shopping in December . . . I was beat after the holidays and it has taken a while to get new inventory together (I'm actually still on that tip) but people keep coming and doing their good deed of spending their precious, hard earned money with us, rather than the big brands. Thank goodness etsy gives us a way to make a living even when it's so hard to get work "out there". Life is good.
TheSpeeceCollection
Oooh, I like seeing this. Sounds like it will be a monthly report. I also like your new Announcements section in the forums.
randomocity
Thank you so much! It's good to know that I'm not the only one experiencing the January blues :)
modtoddy
I'm part of the January new member statistics. Very glad to be here. Love this community, love the business I'm getting!
theGlassOnion
How many of the 138,000 new members were sellers vs. buyers only?
LegendSpiceCompany
millions of dollars spent here in one month....amazing!
bobbijordan
Any chance the stats could report a breakdown in the categories of items sold? ie... furniture, photography, textiles, jewelry, clothing, etc..
thanks for the report!
busterandboo
wow look at all the new members! But theglassonion has a really great question - how many are sellers vs buyers??
Thanks for providing this information!
smeeta
Thanks for the update!
Is there anyway to get these stats in a graph or something charting the previous months/years?
treasuresupplies
Great to hear that ETSY is going strong. And most of all that it's members are reaping the benefits of all of their hard work. I admire so many sellers for their passion to just keep going during these econimic times.
bellacelestina
Thank you for providing these numbers. A far more interesting set of statistics would be a year-over-year comparison (January 2008 vs. January 2009). This should be a rolling comparison of a 12 or 18 month time horizon. Are there any plans to develop that type of comparison, or a more graphical presentation of the data?
halolo
Oh,this is great stat!
But I think it would be much better if there is a chart to compare the stat in last 12 month.
EvesOriginals
It would be very interesting to see the growth over some months. Etsy amazes me every day! It's a great time to be part of it all! Thank you Etsy~!
geminiriverrocks
I would never have guessed that the sales and new listings would have come to this much - impressive!
portobellobelle
It's interesting to see that my shop's statistics are so different than etsy's. My sales went up in January. But a very very slow February so far..
CrazyBliss
congratulation, etsy and all shop owners! the january stats are terrific news.
more than the # of sellers vs buyers stats, i would like to see the number of shop closures (voluntary and forced - no need to separate). that has been a "hole" in the stats all along. it would give us a clearer picture of the etsy scene.
love the addition of the admin announcements section in the forums. etsy is going great guns with site improvements. thanks.
CarmenMonique
I really appreciate the Announcement section and all the updates.
ArtfulMosaicSupplies
I just noticed the announcement section. It's great to be able to see the stats!
Thanks!
RockisSupplies
My goodness! What awesome stats they are considering how things are going right now.
I just LOVE the new Announcement section - right on Admin!
thegaudygoddess
i love stats....i love analyzing them even more! lets keep growing! :)
StelmaDesigns
It's all very positive I think. Feb. is traditionally a slower month in regular retail as I recall from my past retail selling days so etsy is doing great!
StelmaDesigns
What am I saying, these a Jan. stats! Anyway, the numbers are great.
Sommersbreezeantique
First time I have seen the status report, found it to be very interesting. Thank you for sharing!
Here's to a good February.
jcjewelrydesign
WOW!!! $9.9 million of goods were sold in January alone??? I need to digest this number.... :)
Thank you for posting these numbers!!
beadinbythesea
Thanks for the update. My January sales were actually higher than December, go figure!
I would be interested to see the statistics every month compared to the same month a year ago.
voleurdebijoux
Thanks for the data...really puts things into perspective. :)
eclipse
"1,203,417 million new items were listed in January"
surely you mean 1,203,417 new items or 1.2 million new items ?
1,203,417 million would be a thousand billion!
jstinson
Amazing figures! Thanks for sharing this information. The growth in membership is staggering. I had no idea that so many new people had joined! The more the merrier!
paint1chris
Where is January 2008 stats? I checked your history on these and the stats go from Dec 07 to Feb 08. I wanted to check January 2009 to January 2008.
cottonpurr
gotta run my own stat against Etsy stat to get an idea of how I was doing. Anybody is doing that as well?
susantique
It's encouraging to know Etsy is growing despite the economy. I'm so glad to be here and I'll continue to promote the site the best I can. Thanks for the statistics!
jnall3
I used to be in corporate marketing. I would assume that etsy has seasonal ups and downs as in retail. Wouldn't it be better to compare also to January of the past year so seasonality is taken out and let us know if sales are up or down because of the economy?
AutumnRussell
Wow! 138,000 new members?
Curious what the total membership is..
VintageTwenty
I am new to Etsy as of January 23 '09. I made my first sale on January 24th. Exciting! But, no sales since then and there appears to be few views. How did I do so well just off the bat? Did my listings hit the front page as Newly Listed and now I am just out there somewhere? Any suggestions for getting noticed? I find Etsy to be a really interesting site and would like to be successful as a seller!
tiedyedmonkeys
Thanks for the stats. It is good to know the trends. Now I just need to get better at promoting myself.
loosewirestudio
Here's a chart with all available month's statistics in one place, for your viewing convenience:
BeautifullyWiredLynx
well, at least some people are making money! I often wondered about the stats. Thanks.
salmonbarn
Appreciate the info, also agree with jnall3's comment - would be interesting to see comparison to last year's sales. Thanks
itsthelittlethings4u
Great to know! And be a part of.:) And those are some awesome little pictures you displayed here!
IcingOnTheCupcake
It's always so interesting to see this info, especially the amount of new members! Wow!
MeyerLemonDesigns
Wow, I had no idea Etsy drove that much traffic! I'm happy to report I made a few sales in Jan.
DuhBe
Loosewire posted historical numbers, I did something similar with past storque articles and graphed them. You can see the charts from 10/07 to present on my blog here: http://duhbe.com/blog/?p=231
Anybody know where we can get total number of active sellers on Etsy? I would love to see that number compared to sales figures.
InnerArt4BeadsSupply
that's really amazing, never thought January would be this good !
VintageEye
I had a pretty good January.
It's nice that vintage and handmade are
holding their own market share.
Thanks Etsy!
wiccanmagickshack
That is so encouraging, as I'm just starting out as an Etsy seller. I've sold in other venues, but I have lot of hope of doing well here. Those stats are so far above what I thought this site did per month. Well done all the sellers!
LeftHandHats
I'm just starting out with my dream of having a business doing what I LOVE (crochet). I've been a little bummed because I have only had 3 sales this month, but I have faith that it will come. Seeing the numbers helps keep my hopes up! YEAH ETSY!!!!
MySerenityWay
Like the statistics. It's helpfull info. Would like to see a breakdown of sales by category. Is that available anywhere? I know others have also asked. It would help to see what people are drawn to. Good job!!
TheBearAffair
Congrat Lisa as in LisasLovlies for making this article - your products speak for themselves and we all love them!! -
NicaRose
Thank you, there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainow afterall.
FashionTouch
Im glad to know the stats, so thank you winenutnyc. Im also glad to hear about the growing numbers, despite the world economical issues. Im sure month of January was not bad for many of us bc people still going to selebrate the Feb 14th and of course sellers on etsy support this with such a wide variety of wonderful items to pick from. Hoping this trend in stats will be continued and improved! Good luck to everyone.
lesleyfunkyart
I like that you provide that information. It is very interesting.
MomentsByMartha
Is there any data versus last January - so a year on year view as opposed to versus the xmas build up? That'd be useful to know.
Moonlilystudio
Wow amazing how much is sold and really neat that it's shared. Thanks!!!!
mloartwear
thank you for this concise report. Numbers are scary to me though!
thecyclingartist
I'm a stats geek. :)
Could we have a comparison to the previous quarter monthly average and to January last year? Thanks! (comparing to December and xmas sales isn't fair on poor ol' January)
bonspielcreation
Interesting, I had a sense that people were looking lots in January but (in my shop anyways) not buying. As soon as Feb. started, Boom! They started buying. Thank god we're through January!
pandawithcookie
I'm glad January is over for many reasons. On to the selling!
DeborahVoizin
Wow! I am always interested in seeing how things are going overall! Thanks for sharing!
Deborah
IngridsCreations
Thanks for the info. Very interesting! Since I am a new seller it helps give me a little insight into etsy's stats.
beadsbloom
Thank you so much for the breakdown!!! It helps put things in perspective:-)
simplyuboutique
Thanks for sharing that information.
I am glad Etsy continues to grow:)
QuiltSewPieceful
Thanks to shinyadornments for thinking about and calculating the price per item sold of $14.49. It isn't hard, but I wish I had thought of it. Of course, it's just one statistic, but very interesting. Gail at QSP
gardenwhimsies
It's definitely a shot of sunshine (not just a sunbreak for Northwesterners) over here in Portland (Oregon). I've been "preparing" to get my shop going and this certainly makes the economy not look as glum. Granted, seeing the requests for category breakdowns is intriguing but I could just imagine the pendulum swings when everyone jumps onto those named bandwagons... maybe that's best left unknown? Or, if revealed there could be a contest between the various mediums for improving their game scores? Ok, ok... I'll become an active seller first before putting both big feet in... but I really DO love Etsy.
bijougirldesigns
Those stats are amazing! And I've definitely seen an increase in sales the closer we get to Valentine's Day! A lot of custom orders too! Yay for holidays!
BusyBeeBumbleBeads
I was one of those new sign ups in January 09. It has been great! I love ETSY! I appreciate the stats. Thank you.
AnnLuise
It is amazing how many people Etsy units - crafters and those who love craft goods. Makes some hope for the future of our planet, ;-). Thanks a lot for making that possible!
LoveKnotDesigns
They say that even in a rough economy, little things (like lipstick) sell well...so there's hope for all of us who sell "little things" :) I'm a new seller, so nice to see some stats!
theglasschef
Well, that is really motivating to know that life goes on and people are still selling. Yay! Thanks for letting us know.
lizamyers
Astonishing sales for January. I'm fairly new to Etsy- joined a while back but am just beginning to really focus on my pages. Very exciting.
