Etsy's Handmade Blog
Etsy Statistics: June 2009 Weather Report

Here's a report on the numbers we recorded from the Etsy marketplace for June 2009.

The stats:

  • $12.8 million of goods were sold, roughly 4% lower than May's $13.3 million
  • That represents 787,692 items sold for the month, 4% lower than May’s 817,070
  • 1,315,547 new items were listed in the month, 0.1% lower than May’s 1,316,977
  • 157,000 new members joined the Etsy community in the month, down 3,000, or 2% from May
  • 484,227,357 page views were recorded on the site this month, a 2.7% decrease from May

Overall, June results were more or less comparable to May’s after factoring in that there are 30 days in June and 31 in May. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Etsy community in June 2009!

I had less hits in June in my other etsy shop. but still made sales. wonder if we could know the break down on what categories made the sales. like 50% of sales under handmade tag, 45% under supplies tag.... that kind of thing.
oh Artsy-check you with the groovy weird "car guy" thing that of course caught my eye! yay!!

July 10, 2009 at 2:14 p.m. theeye

are showcase spots included in the amount of 'goods sold'?

July 10, 2009 at 2:16 p.m. tinybirdarts

I wonder if the stagnation/decline has anything to do with SEO issues. Good thing that's getting fixed soon!

July 10, 2009 at 2:16 p.m. satellitedaisy

not too shabby, considering the current state of the
economy.

July 10, 2009 at 3 p.m. gypsywoman

I'd like to see the stats broken down, by how many items sold, and in dollars, in..handmade...supplies..and vintage....

July 10, 2009 at 3:01 p.m. PetitPoulailler

Does 'goods sold' include Etsy Showcases?
Does 'new items' include re-newed listings?

July 10, 2009 at 3:09 p.m. Radness

those are some good figures!

July 10, 2009 at 3:09 p.m. SWANclothing

thanks for the stats. i'd love to see more of a breakdown too. some sort of stratification of how many sellers are making, for example, 0-500, 500-2000, 2000-5000 etc. per year and/or month.

and i love myblackdress! wow. thanks for including her. what a great idea and wonderful dresses.

July 10, 2009 at 3:10 p.m. Mymothersgarden

Interesting to know the numbers...thanks for keeping us updated.

July 10, 2009 at 3:15 p.m. merlinsbarkproducts

Our figures are right in line with Etsy's - sale numbers for June were down roughly 4% from our sale numbers in May (which was our best month to date). So far our sale figures for July are looking to exceed May's so hopefully Etsy's will do the same.

Upward and onward we go!

July 10, 2009 at 3:18 p.m. lovelygifts

July 10, 2009 at 4 p.m. That70sShoppe

The number that surprises me the most is how many new members join each month. Wow!

July 10, 2009 at 4:05 p.m. SweetwaterGifts

Not sure how to interpret this - but sure would like a piece of that sales figure!

July 10, 2009 at 4:17 p.m. steinschmuckdesign

Amazing!
Thank you!

July 10, 2009 at 4:20 p.m. breadandroses

Ditto on requests for more breakdowns & specifics: handmade, vintage & supplies sections; actual new listings vs. relisted items; new members: registered sellers, buyers only. These statistics are essential for keeping a finger on the pulse of Etsy and business planning. Looking forward to seeing the details soon!

July 11, 2009 at 11:52 a.m. nomadcraftsetc

So sales really aren't gone, they are still there. We just have to work hard at promoting! Everyone Promote Promote Promote! That is the key! Good luck in the month of July! And remember that The holidays are right around the corner, start stocking up and getting ready! :) Yeah for June!

July 11, 2009 at 11:53 a.m. OriginalsbyLauren

thanks for the info, is there a way we can see how the drop compares to June 2008. Is this a season thing, or does the SEO problem have to do with it.'
Either way, thanks for sharing

July 11, 2009 at 4:31 p.m. lizjewelry

The numbers sound encouraging! I too would be curious to see how they compare to 2008. Thanks Etsy!

July 11, 2009 at 6:24 p.m. MyVintageAddiction

I'm glad that this was posted..thank you!

July 11, 2009 at 6:37 p.m. DantesSpirit

How in the world is a DECREASE in stats the same or comparable to the month before???

You don't want a DECREASE1 YOu want an INCREASE!

Wake up, people! Etsy screwed us all over when they messed with the SEO and the meta tags/titles.
THIS is the result! Decreases across the board in sales and views!

How in the world do any of you see a decrease as a good thing????

This boggles my mind.

July 11, 2009 at 6:59 p.m. Timeless

"Overall, June results were more or less comparable to May’s after factoring in that there are 30 days in June and 31 in May."

So one tiny little day made all the difference? Really? Wow.

Wonder what excuse you'll come up with next, Etsy.

July 11, 2009 at 7:31 p.m. GoblinsMarket

Here's a list of 12 months worth of Etsy Weather reports on one page:
http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php...

The comparison to last years sales is actually quite good but things really flattened out in the last 3 months which isn't good considering the rate of growth that Etsy was seeing previously.

July 12, 2009 at 10:42 a.m. jodieflowers

Great News!

July 12, 2009 at 11:10 a.m. ModernMetalJewelry

Very useful statistics... Thank you!!!!

July 12, 2009 at 5:18 p.m. BigSkyDreamer

All of Etsy continues to inspire me. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it. No one, that I am aware of is forced to use it's srvices. Let me know if that is not true. "Acting spontaneously and with heart."

July 12, 2009 at 11:07 p.m. JayBehrle

It's still a staggering amount of sales. Congrats everyone!

July 12, 2009 at 11:34 p.m. brandedbutterfly

These figures are not good. I certainly hope we will not be getting into a running trend like this. Would prefer to see fewer people joining, and the figures for sales either staying as strong as last month or better. That would be a much better weather report. Of course, weather reports after the fact are hardly needed as we can all look out of the front door and see what is going on. Maybe we would be better off with forecasts that include plans for more sales and fewer new sellers. Just a thought.

July 13, 2009 at midnight twinkletoes27

It's amazing to see how big etsy really is in terms of sales. I hope I can become one of the statistics soon! Still looking for my first sale.

July 13, 2009 at 11:06 a.m. tldgrainwear

July 13, 2009 at 2:05 p.m. DaisyChains

Makes me feel less crazy to know I wasn't the only one seeing a lag in June (one of my worst months in quite a while). Soooooooooooooooo happy that July seems to be well on it's way.

July 13, 2009 at 7:52 p.m. stellatevintage

wow, thanks Duhbe! that's exactly what i was looking for, i was thinking about making one myself, but you've got it covered.

July 28, 2009 at 3:35 p.m. looksSEWnice

Wonderful! I hope that I'm on the new seller list soon!

Aug. 5, 2009 at 10:32 a.m. Furiousdreams

Hey, late in getting here, but thanks to DuhBe for that awesome graph. Immediate understanding.

Aug. 7, 2009 at 12:05 a.m. redjk

They are amazing figures. Would be good etsy can provide stats for each shop as well! e.g. it would be nicer for us to see the number of sold, inactive, on sale items etc.

Sept. 23, 2009 at 3:31 a.m. ArtEffectsInWood

Having read yout statistics I find it a little depressing.
I divided the impressive looking total by the number of items sold and found the average cost of each item to be just over $16. Not so impressive.
I make items out of wood and $16 would likely be the average cost of of shipping one of my larger items.
What chance do you think I have of making anything, much less 'a living' on Etsy?
On the other hand I do like the site and enjoy looking at some of the great work shown on it and intend to press on with it.
Daniel
