Etsy Statistics: May 2009 Weather Report

We'd like to share some information about the marketplace from the past month, May 2009.

The stats:

  • $13.3 million of goods were sold; roughly 6% higher than April's $12.6 million.
  • That represents 817,070 items sold for the month, 4% higher than April’s 786,825.
  • 1,316,977 new items were listed in the month, 3% higher than April’s 1,277,442.
  • 159,000 new members joined the Etsy community in the month, up 5,000, or 4% from April. 
  • 497,434,747 page views were recorded on the site this month, a 1% increase from April.

My shop must have made up for some of the slow shops because I sold more than twice as many items in May as April. June is a bit slower so far, but I am still refilling my shop from a busy May. We will see.

Technically, May has one additional day so having a higher number of listings versus April makes sense. If you take April and divide by 30 then multiply by 31...May is actually slightly below average.

Awesome! It's so interesting to compare the big collective etsy family results to our personal store results.

On a somewhat related note (perhaps it's only connecting in my mind), thanks for making advertising so accessible via the Showcase spots. My boyfried spends 'thousands' (according to him) on internet advertising at a much greater cost per visitor to his site, and fusses over how lucky we are with opportunities on etsy. I really appreciate the chance for indepented artists on a relatively smaller budget to cost effectively promote their work!

PS, please don't raise the cost of the Showcase spots since I said it was a good deal ;) Thanks again.

Awesome to see that even with this crazy, down economy everything has roughly doubled since last May.

That speaks volumes about the quality of Etsy and the pull of handmade, artisan direct goods.

I believe it will take all of us advertising our stores to get Etsy even more known which will in turn help us all. I have put it on my business cards, banner and my earring cards for when I do shows. More and more people will know Etsy!

After being on Etsy for 7 months - I finally started getting sales in the month of March and April. Feeling really good because it was finally happening!

Month of May everything suddenly stopped. Haven't had any sales since.

I guess this explains why!

As a seller on Etsy it helps to have a benchmark to compare my shop's performance to. With the published data going back to January 2008, I noticed two interesting trends.

The average selling price per item is trending up. (Good for me as my items are higher priced)

The number of page views required to generate a sale is trending down (good for all Etsy sellers as higher percentage of 'lookers' are now 'buyers').

Unfortunately, I can't attach the excel spreadsheet here. But, I'm happy to email it to anyone interested.
