Hi all,
While September is under way, here at Etsy we’re well into preparations for the coming holiday season. Before we look ahead, we wanted to share some good news from the past two months. If you’ve read the latest Etsy Weather Report, you know that Etsy drew record traffic in August. And the best part is, the trend is continuing into this first half of September.
The increase in visits to Etsy is coming through all channels, including: direct traffic, organic search, Etsy emails, and a long tail of referring sites and social media outreach through Facebook and Twitter. Thanks goes to all Etsy sellers who are marketing their shops and who are taking advantage of some of the new tools we’re making available, such as Facebook Connect, to help promote your items.
The increase in direct traffic to the site is also attributable to Etsy’s marketing efforts as outlined in my last Talking Marketing post. These efforts included:
- Display ads running in July and August on Dooce, The Pioneer Woman and many other targeted blogs read by Etsy shoppers.
- The DIY Wedding Crafts contest Etsy created in partnership with Martha Stewart Weddings. (Vote now for your favorite!)
- Our Handmade Moment video contest has 25 semifinalists. The final 10 will be judged by you, along with celebrity judges such as actress Olivia Wilde (House), Brett Anderson (The Donnas) and Andrew Wagner (Editor-in-Chief of ReadyMade).
In addition, the Etsy team worked to have Etsy shops and products featured in publications such as Martha Stewart Weddings, Cookie, Lucky, and Real Simple — internationally in ELLE Italia, Vogue UK, and through online features at Food & Wine, The Daily Green, Casa Sugar, and The Frisky, to name a few.
Finally, we were humbled and delighted to learn that Etsy was named for the third consecutive year one of Time.com’s 50 Best Websites.
In case you haven’t seen the announcement, we are making important SEO-related changes to the site. These changes were developed by Etsy’s engineering and product teams in consultation with SEOmoz, third-party SEO experts. We expect these changes will attract even more traffic to Etsy.
Looking Ahead to the Final Months of the Year
We’ve launched our Halloween efforts on the site including multiple Halloween focused Gift Guides and Halloween-themed Etsy Finds, and we are gearing up for holiday season promotions.*
In the next few weeks, we expect to host more Virtual Labs focused on SEO and also to publish the SEO guide specifically designed for Etsy sellers. We will also run additional online display advertising in both the U.S. and internationally on networks and websites like Decor8, Indie Art & Design, Style Files, Mixtapezine and Wardrobe Refashion.
We continue to seek out media partners who can help promote Etsy in popular outlets where potential
buyers might discover us. New partners on the horizon include Good Housekeeping and People.com. Our outreach to print publications has proven successful; we don’t want to jinx things, but we’re expecting some more great coverage in relevant print publications, websites, and blogs coming up for October and through the end of the year. We’ll continue to report back through this series and through our Etsy in the Press series to keep you informed.

Last week Maria, Matt and I were in Chicago meeting with Etsy sellers and conducting some buyer-only focus groups with current and prospective Etsy buyers. We're using focus groups to specifically target feedback about Etsy from shoppers. This is just one way we learn from the community, along with other channels like the Forums, Etsy emails, surveys, user testing and through the Virtual Labs.
So for now, it’s back to work, and we’ll talk soon.

I must confess that this marketing side of the etsy land is waht i realy enjoy! Guys you're doing a great work with the spread of the brand and the viral movies (especially with the etsy.tv contest).
