Etsy's Handmade Blog
Talking Product: Etsy Site Feature Priorities for 2009

Hi friends,

Following up on our recent Talking Shop podcast, I want to provide a few operational updates from the Etsy Product Team. We are excited to summarize what we’ve accomplished since my last Talking Product update and to provide a glimpse into the priorities for the second half of the year.

So, what have we accomplished in the last few months?

Search
As I noted in my last update, Search is our top priority for 2009. We made enhancements to Search designed to improve the Etsy shopping experience:

Checkout
We’ve been working to make clarifications and improvements to the Etsy checkout process, and we launched several updates in the past few months to make it easier for shoppers to purchase on Etsy:

Seller Tools
We launched beta versions of two new features frequently requested by sellers: a new shipping tool which includes regional shipping options for Europe and the ability to rearrange items in your shop. We’re making a few updates to these features based on feedback we received during testing, and we will be rolling these new features out to everyone in July.

Payments
We provided sellers with the ability to pay their Etsy bill with PayPal. This was a highly requested feature for many sellers, and we hope many of you have opted in to use this new service.

Showcase
We gave Etsy Category pages a fresh new look, making Category Showcases more prominent. We also launched Subcategory Showcases for Jewelry and Art.

Sharing
We made it easier to share your Favorites and share Etsy with your friends on Facebook.

Developer Community
Lastly, we also launched the Etsy Developer Community and API and have seen some exciting applications enabled by it. Our Handmade Code series on Etsy’s blog, The Storque, has featured a number of them, including Craft Cult, Etsy Hacks, ColorMatch by 26OliveStreet and the “Etsy Addict” iPhone application.

What’s in store for the remainder of 2009?

Our top focus continues to be on helping shoppers find and discover unique items and making it easier for them to check out. Here are some further details on our top priorities going into the second half of the year:

Search and Browsing
Search remains our top priority. One important area of focus will be improving the category structure and introducing category-specific search refinements for shoppers.

As part of the improvements to our category structure, you will see in the coming months updates to certain categories. We’ve been working closely with sellers in specific categories to understand the best taxonomy for these areas, and we look forward to launching these updates.

Adding category-specific search refinements means, for example, if a buyer is searching or browsing for a sweater, we want to make it easier for them to refine their choices by options like size and color. In order to do this we will need to enhance the item listing process and update our category taxonomy. We think these enhancements will provide much needed improvements to finding, discovering and buying on Etsy.

These are very large undertakings as listing, tagging, searching and browsing are at the core of our site experience. Improvements will occur over time, and we will do our best to communicate major changes.

Checkout
As mentioned in my last update, we are working on “inline registration” (in other words, letting first-time buyers check out on Etsy without forcing them to confirm their registration first). The goal is to make it easier for first-time buyers to check out on Etsy. This will be launching before the end of the summer using a new A/B testing framework. This A/B test will give us the ability to launch this new functionality to only a small percentage of our users, while a majority of members will still experience the existing functionality. This allows us to monitor performance and feedback before launching to everyone. We’ll provide further details as we get closer to launch.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
We are committed to implementing and sharing SEO best practices with our community. To that end, in addition to our own ongoing efforts, we are hiring SEO specialists to work with us on a comprehensive strategy as well as implementation plan. We're working to formalize an agreement with these specialists and will be sharing additional details in the coming weeks.

Community
We will be launching in the next couple months a redesign of the Community main page. The goal of this redesign is to provide better access to information to the community about important news, events and activities occurring on Etsy.

Help
Improving customer support is top of mind for us at Etsy. We will be updating our internal systems and processes in the coming months to provide better support to our members. This includes updating our Help pages to make it easier for members to find information more quickly.

There’s more ahead so please stay tuned. I’ll continue to provide regular quarterly updates on our progress as well as upcoming projects. As always, your feedback is important, so I look forward to a continued dialogue around our priorities. Please post your comments below.

Thanks,

Sara, a.k.a saralouhicks

I am very sad to see that folders to organize favorites is NOT on the priority list! This is something everyone wants and has begged for the past 3 years.

Please consider a regional shipping tool for the United States as well. This would go a long way in making life easier for the majority of your sellers and buyers.

I really like the forthcoming option of rearranging my shop, and the Facebook feature was very easy to use. Thanks so much for all of your hard work! I know from experience how much effort goes into even seemingly minor system changes, and these upgrades seem very significant to me. Thanks!!!

July 1, 2009 at 11:58 p.m. norskwoodshop

Very excited to see a change to checkout that does not required an email confirmation for new registrations!!!! I think this is a large barrier in the checkout process.

Does anyone (Etsy) have any stats on purchase abandons due to the email confirmation?

in regards to

"This includes updating our Help pages to make it easier for members to find information more quickly."

I really hope you will look to the community. A lot of us have written some pretty sweet tech tutorials and it would be great if those could be shared with a wider seller audience here on etsy.

my tutorials can be found here: http://www.etsytechnologyhelp.blogspo...

as well as seller goto who has some really neat tutorials as well http://www.gotogreatpanes.com/blog/

I know there are also some others with great tutorials that have already been written we just need to get the word out.

nice job on the search improvements :)

July 2, 2009 at 4:15 a.m. crochetgal

Thanks for keeping us up to date. I think that the 'inline registration' will be of great assistance to many of us who are trying to bring new buyers to Etsy.

The search really needs to be kept on top of. If people cannot search, then they cannot buy!

Thanks for the updates.

July 2, 2009 at 4:47 a.m. roomtoromp

Thanks for your hard work. I feel as though I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing, creating a product people desire, and you're doing what you're supposed to be doing, making it easier for the customer to find and purchase my products.

Thank you all,
for all the Work you do for us!
THANK YOU!

July 2, 2009 at 9:19 a.m. TipsyTimeMachine

Can't wait to be able to use the rearrange feature. And searching for items is much easier. Thanks etsy.

But it really would be helpful for changes to be made to the "your etsy page". When I am editing items on the second page, and I finish, I am automatically sent back to the first page, so I have to click on the second page all over again to edit the next item...very time consuming. If "edit the next item" could be a choice that would be fabulous, or even if you would automatically be sent back to the same page you were working on (instead of page 1), it would be a time saver.

July 2, 2009 at 9:41 a.m. PawPawsWorkshop

Thank you
Everything you do seem to improve Etsy for us sellers.

July 2, 2009 at 9:45 a.m. JAdamsDesigns

Awesome changes for sure! I think I am most excited about being able to re-arrange my shop just like a lot of other sellers here!! YAY!
The new checkout process for newbies sounds good, I often wondered how many people decide not to buy because they are afraid of having to join up with yet another website.. Anything that makes it easier for new people to buy from Etsy the better!! :-)
And yeah I have to agree that making some changes for how we are able to edit items in the future would be appreciated!

July 2, 2009 at 9:58 a.m. breadandroses

Adding Google Checkout as an online payment to Etsy Checkout would be a huge improvement and make it so much easier for sellers and buyers who do not want to use Paypal. Rob promised this to me personally by email nearly two years ago, back when sellers actually received personal responses to queries. What happened?

July 2, 2009 at 10:07 a.m. HeathensHearth

Thank you so much for all you guys do. I love the Facebook connect and I am looking forward to the ability to move items around in my shop!

July 2, 2009 at 10:09 a.m. jlpisrael

All of the advances are very exciting! I personally have used atleast 90% of the new features that have been rolled out on the site. The Advanced Search has been much more helpful in narrowing down to the most accurate results. I shop for supplies quite often and this has really saved me time.
I love the Facebook feature!

Being able to rearrange items in the shop will be a huge plus! I think about that everyday when I am in my shop.

I personally would love an archiving area for the shop. It would show each item in the shop, active and sold, post date, item number, how many times the item had to be reacitvated and the dates and then the invoice information that comes with a sold order.

July 2, 2009 at 11:52 a.m. AustinModern

In regards to checkout:
(in other words, letting first-time buyers check out on Etsy without forcing them to confirm their registration first)

Will this be in conjunction with integrated payment to prevent higher numbers of non pays/abandoned purchases?

I might be mis-reading this but it reads that new shoppers will be able to checkout (aka remove items from shops) without needing to go through the extra step of registering an account?
Please clarify?

-------------

I just want to know if you are aware that several shops are completely invisible to google search engines?
And are pulling these results from analyzers when running the shops address? Especially newer shops?
This is the partial results from a shop which cannot be found when searching google even when searched this way
site:http://username.etsy.com
which is a method suggested by google to use which will pull the 1 and only result for the address?
the result says the shop does not exist, did not return any results.

-----------
WebSite / Domain Ranking
Google PageRank (without www) 0 (Possibly FAKE -- Google is not caching this domain)
Google PageRank (with www) 0 (Possibly FAKE -- Google is not caching this domain)

Listed in Google Directory? Not listed
Google SERP (google.com) Not in top 100
Indexed pages on Google 0

----------

can you explain why this is happening?

searching for her shop in normal ways returns, 1st another user's shop unrelated completely, no connection.

The policy page for the shop searched
An on site(etsy) cached version of a search result page for her shop
blogs and bookmarks but not her shop home page

***Listed in Google Directory? Not listed***

SEO problems really need to be addressed sooner than a tentative "in the coming weeks". Someone should be answering these questions even if the fix is not a quick one, the questions need to be addressed and handled with some show of real support.

July 2, 2009 at 12:54 p.m. PillowThrowDecor

When I Google search for my shop

pillowthrowdecor.etsy.com

... another shop shows up in the first link as you can see below. I have blocked out the sellers name as I do not want to be seen as calling out. This seller has been a real sweetheart as we are trying to figure out why I am joined at the hip to her shop????

Blo*****dingPress on Etsy - WEIRDLY EDIBLE BUT LIABLE TO MUTATE ...
13 Oct 2006 ... Blo*****ing Press offers provocative poetry chapbooks & more!~COMING SOON! The winners of the first-ever Blood Pudding Press chapbook ...

The next item on this list is a link to my favourites which still does not get them into my store...

The next item on the list is my bio and still not my store

For several more pages my Etsy store is NOT SHOWING UP.

I have invested in advertising but still have had people tell me they had a hard time finding me. Google base is not accepting my uploads either.

I need help here quickly. I have doubled and tripled the number of items in my store since I started here but my views have dropped to my "beginning levels". As soon as I stop paid advertising my views crash and burn as Google A indicates.

Last week, Etsy SUPPORT suggested I read several articles on SEO which I had already previously done and as well, had already checked my site for SEO with a 92 score on site optimization.

This suggestion was of no help for my dilemma so I am now hoping that you will please look into this right away.

Please help.

Thanks

I look forward to the day that etsy once more has the incredible traffic I understood it had for when I joined. It is my greatest hope that your continued hard work and efforts to improve etsy, results in the fabulous venue for all artists I understood it to be. Thank you for your continuing hard work, brainstorming and efforts on all of our behalves.

You can see from the above link that when you click on it you are taken directly to my store. This is what I would like when exactly this is searched for in the Google Search Bar... It works for other shops but not mine???

This search works only when on the ETSY site... try the google search and you will understand the problem.

Thanks so much.

July 3, 2009 at 1:01 a.m. 101BestBeads

Thanks! It sure would be great if we could offer our customers discount codes or coupons as well. The incentive to have a sale is very hard on this site. Whenever I offer a discount I have to pay Etsy a fee on the full price after I refund my customer through Paypal. I just can't afford to keep doing that.

July 3, 2009 at 1:24 a.m. JILLreDESIGNS

Thanks for all you do on our behalf. I'm excited about the changes, but I'd love to see the ability to change expired listings before renewing added to the list.

I am very excited to hear about the new feature that will allow customers to purchase without confirming their account with Etsy. I think that will bring in a lot more buyers to the site. Thanks Etsy for the update!

July 3, 2009 at 2:48 a.m. RightAsRainCreations

If we could just have a "tags" box for favorites like we do for Conversations, that would help, because then we could at least tag our favorites "gift", "beads" "Tom's Birthday" etc, and then do a search by tag to isolate those specific favorites.

I do love the changes made to Search so far - and am thrilled to know that Etsy is working on implementing category-specific search refinement soon.

Thanks for working on these issues. I can't wait to use some of the new features.

One idea, how about a "maintenance mode" for our shops? We can make changes to our whole shop (like pricing, removing items, adding new sections, etc) w/o the public knowing while we are doing it. just an idea.

July 3, 2009 at 7:35 a.m. PawPawsWorkshop

Some great ideas

July 3, 2009 at 9:38 a.m. paperstreet

Will the SEO changes be done in time to begin planning for the Christmas sales season?
Will we be getting our titles back for our shops? If not can you let us know? The Christmas season preparation time is getting shorter everyday and many of us would like/need to plan months ahead in order to be ready.

Please communicate on this issue

July 3, 2009 at 12:38 p.m. amyelyseneer

well having just lost a sale due to bugs with your registration procedure, I can only hope this fixes the issues. Having to make someone clear their cache after they register is shoddy. Other websites have figured out how to update a cookie correctly, the fix is out there, I'd like to see this taken care of pronto.

After an evening of trying and PM'ing with me on Fb about the issue the person gave up.

Thanks for all the improvement and hard work. I like the new look, and being able to see how many hearts an item has received without an extra click being involved.
