Etsy's Handmade Blog
Tech Update: Checkout Updates

Checkout is a core experience on Etsy, one which we are working to improve.  Our goals for Checkout are to make it easy for buyers to purchase items on Etsy and to reduce the occurrence of buyers who complete Checkout on Etsy but do not complete payment on PayPal.

Today, we completed the first phase of updating the Etsy Checkout process.  This first phase consists of improving messaging.  Our changes include:

  • Updating the language on each page of Checkout to better inform buyers on the steps required to checkout.
  • Changing the wording on the third page of Checkout. This page is now messaged to the buyer as the "Final Review" page. Also, the button to continue is now called "Commit To Buy" — driving home the point that they still need to pay, whether with PayPal or any other method.
  • Updating the design of the last page of Checkout. See below for a screenshot. When using PayPal, we now tell the buyer how many payments are remaining and clearly provide a payment status on each item.

Looking into the future, we are planning a number of improvements to the Checkout process. For now, we hope you check out the new Checkout as you're checking out with some great handmade and vintage items!

April 14, 2009 at 4:25 p.m. stylesmith

Probably should mention the changes to the email that the seller receives also. Then the panicky posts in the bugs section will stop....

April 14, 2009 at 4:26 p.m. redyellowandblueink

Thank you-hope this helps clarify the steps to finalize the sale. Some of my customers have been stumped at that last step, I am glad you are working on it.

Much better--thanks!

-------
Yes, we also made minor content updates to the emails that buyers and sellers receive, both for clarity and to communicate that payment is not complete until the buyer has paid via PayPal, check, or money order.

April 14, 2009 at 4:28 p.m. brookberrys

Awesome!

April 14, 2009 at 4:29 p.m. Waterrose

Wow and I just bought something 30 minutes ago and it wasn't there...see it only takes a few minutes for change...lol (thanks developers...I know it didn't take you just minutes....)

April 14, 2009 at 4:29 p.m. purplelemondesigns

This is great! Thanks for listening Etsy admin.

April 14, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. ChicyCreations

This is wonderful! Can't wait to purchase something with these new steps. These improvements will really help. I think most non-payer problems happen when buyers purchase multiple items and get confused about paying for all of them. Good work etsy!

April 14, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. swanmountainsoaps

Awesome! Thank you!

April 14, 2009 at 4:31 p.m. FancifulForm

April 14, 2009 at 4:39 p.m. SudsNSuch

Dennis, my guess is that's where you pick the address you want it shipped to.

April 14, 2009 at 4:41 p.m. blendastudio

Very good news! I'm really happy for this change. I remember the first time I bought something on Etsy. I thought I had paid for the item and waited and waited for it to come in the mail. After about a week and a half decided to check my order and the buyer had been politely and silently waiting for me to get around to paying. I had no idea I hadn't completed the transaction until I went back to check! So great news! -B

April 14, 2009 at 5:54 p.m. enticements

April 14, 2009 at 5:56 p.m. bubblegirlknits

April 14, 2009 at 5:58 p.m. dahliasoleil

I hope this makes a difference cause I've been getting an unusual amount of non-paying buyers lately. But I have to say I have never understood why check-out is difficult for some people..it's always been relatively easy to me since I joined almost 3 years ago.

April 14, 2009 at 6:02 p.m. fabricfarrago

Okay I thought I had lost my mind. I bought something earlier today, before the change, and then I just bought something else right now -- I was like, ummm, I really don't remember that it was like this earlier today. I'm glad you told us that it just changed, because I seriously thought I was loosing it!!

April 14, 2009 at 6:12 p.m. kusu

must shop now

April 14, 2009 at 6:31 p.m. Slowshirts

Wonderful, now add an OBVIOUS place for buyers to choose a size or color during checkout (besides the current "Notes to seller" option) and i'll be the happiest etsy seller alive.

I've been waiting years for this~!!!

April 14, 2009 at 6:34 p.m. becausemaybe

awesome! i hope this makes things easier in terms of me not having to send out reminders to my buyers. i hate doing that. it makes me feel like a tax collector or loan shark. and i don't have to sit around wondering when someone's gonna pay.

April 14, 2009 at 6:43 p.m. amyhatch

thank you for doing this! I think it will be much clearer to the customer, especially customers who are first time buyers on Etsy, as to what to do!

April 14, 2009 at 6:49 p.m. SavonShoppe

Wow - It looks fantastic!!

April 14, 2009 at 9:04 p.m. LastChantsStudio

yup! This looks much clearer and easier than the buyer going back to the seller's site for clues, wondering if there's anything else they are supposed to do...and I hear there are going to be some more "sub-catagories" on the catagories. That's good too! Thank for making our sea of etsy more navigable!

April 14, 2009 at 9:07 p.m. LastChantsStudio

April 14, 2009 at 9:48 p.m. pickleberries

Thank you for these and upcoming changes that make the process easier for the customer to understand.

To have to start a relationship with a customer asking for payment is uncomfortable for the buyer and the seller. It should never have to happen, but it often does because the process has been confusing.

April 14, 2009 at 9:50 p.m. MadeByLaura

I used checkout today and noticed the changes I think they are much more clear.
Thanks for the update!!

Aherm.

April 14, 2009 at 10:30 p.m. archeress

Great! This will help so much with buyers who didn't understand the previous format.

Hopefully changes will come soon to allow us to offer more than one type of shipping method, as well.

April 14, 2009 at 10:36 p.m. pulpsushi

Just tried it out this evening and its looking good. :)

April 14, 2009 at 10:44 p.m. norakaren

Thank you!!!!

April 15, 2009 at 12:06 a.m. curlyfrysc

It still says, "order is not complete until you pay" making one think that they have not purchased the item therefore they do not need to pay. You need to make buyers realize that they have purchased the item but still need to pay for said item. It needs to say, "item purchased, continue to payment process". Then have them click on the Paypal link.

April 15, 2009 at 12:23 a.m. silentgoddess

While I applaud Etsy for making some new changes, I am not happy that they still haven't addressed the fact that a buyer can complete checkout without making a payment.
I still believe you should not have anything removed from your store until payment is made. I can't go to JCPenney's site and complete an order without submitting proper payment info so why should Etsy be any different? I have had several non-paying buyers lately and they have had nothing to do with being "newbies". It is people who have NO intention of paying. They were just "window shopping". It wastes my studio time trying to chase down people who never intended on paying, then having to cancel and relist. Not to mention the item has lost its views and hearts.
I say again, nothing should be removed from a store without payment being submitted when using Paypal as a payment method. Period.
I hope that Etsy is still working on making a positive solution for this problem. These new fixes just are not good enough for me.
I have been Etsy's biggest fan for several years, but this is where I have found myself drawing a line.
Thanks for listening.

April 15, 2009 at 12:25 a.m. MintyFreshFusions

I agree with the above, or just else leave it in their shopping cart so I don't have to waste my time reporting transactions.

But this sounds better than before! :]

April 15, 2009 at 12:25 a.m. MintyFreshFusions

great change, and sure to improve smooth riding for new buyers. come to think of it, I'm not even new and I forgot to go through the PayPal step last time I purchased! (I realized and hour later, however.)

Ace!

April 15, 2009 at 3:48 a.m. nomoredrama

good deal. i wondered why i had to re-do my pay pal purchase in my e-mail.

April 15, 2009 at 3:50 a.m. lindabutterfly

Agree with silentgoddess above.

I have had only one "problem" customer but that one gave me a great deal of angst, blaming me vehemently for Etsy's checkout system. Her emails were abusive and difficult to deal with and she would not contact Etsy directly, saving her wrath for me.

If changes are being made, why are they being made in fits and starts? Go the whole hog and do a decent job, please.

April 15, 2009 at 5 a.m. anakim

Great! I hope it will solve some problem.

April 15, 2009 at 5:11 a.m. gorjuss

changes seem great - well done !

April 15, 2009 at 6:32 a.m. Yoola

April 15, 2009 at 8:10 a.m. lovelygifts

Good changes, thanks!

April 15, 2009 at 8:13 a.m. Lunaversoul

A definite step in the right direction!
In the past I have had incidences when two of my customers have paid for their purchase's through Etsy's "previous" checkout system, but the transaction's had shown up on Etsy as an unpaid purchase.
Which has later left me dealing with a couple of upset customers, tracking down payments through Paypal & so on.
This has also happened to a few other sellers I know.
I really hope that the updated check system corrects this problem as well.
I really do appreciate all your hard work!
Thank you!

April 15, 2009 at 8:14 a.m. Knit2getherInLove

Thank You!
Hopefully this will clear some issues that newbies to my shop have had checking out. I have had several that I needed to walk through the process.
I do agree that until items are completely paid for they should remain in the shop. I had my first experience with a "window shopper" last week.

April 15, 2009 at 8:22 a.m. ellabellamay

Excellent update! It makes shopping easier and much more clear for both buyer and seller. Always appreciated! Thank you!

April 15, 2009 at 8:27 a.m. Riggio

I don't like it.I just bought two things from one shop and had to pay for them separately. Before you could pay for them at the same time.

April 15, 2009 at 8:32 a.m. WoollyWonka

This will really help! Thanks!

April 15, 2009 at 8:52 a.m. BayMoonDesign

Great improvement! Thank you. I have had trouble when purchasing from Etsy in the past. I thought I had paid when in fact I hadn't. The seller had to email me with directions on how to complete the sale. I noticed your improvement and it is easy to complete the purchase now.

April 15, 2009 at 9:28 a.m. ArtmakersWorlds

Fantastic! Sure hope this helps.
Thanks!

April 15, 2009 at 9:54 a.m. soaps

April 15, 2009 at 9:56 a.m. ClaudineMJ

Very interesting. I'm now curious and have to check it out!!

April 15, 2009 at 10 a.m. urbanblue

Great improvements! Thank you!

April 15, 2009 at 10:05 a.m. AmyGaines

Wonderful!!!
I will admit that the etsy invoice e-mail is very different- it took me awhile to find the "message to buyer" which was the last thing on the old etsy invoice e-mail but not in the new. So be careful, if you dont read the message thru "details" and only on the invoice, you may miss it.
But I LOVE the checkout changes!!!!

April 15, 2009 at 10:06 a.m. Squier

Is there a cancel the sale button along the way for those who put stuff in their shopping cart and then decided they don't want it? So the item(s) don't just hang in limbo and sellers are wondering is this a real sale? If there isn't there should be, so the item goes back into the sellers shop when someone decides they don't really want to buy it.

April 15, 2009 at 10:20 a.m. moonstr

yaaay:D

April 15, 2009 at 10:21 a.m. Tumus

I totally agree with silentgoddess!
"nothing should be removed from a store without payment being submitted when using Paypal as a payment method. Period." {silentgoddess}
Etsy still has a long way to go on making this true on-line shopping. Until these changes are done Etsy will not be viewed as a serious great place to shop despite the awesome goods. This hurts all of us.

April 15, 2009 at 11:19 a.m. mamapainter

OMG! Simply changing the wording will make all the difference in the world. I am very happy with these changes.

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!!!!!!!!!!! :)

April 15, 2009 at 11:20 a.m. Vanessa

Thanks for all the feedback. I just wanted to clarify that if a shopper has items in her shopping cart, those items are still in the seller's shop. Right now, items are not removed from a shop until the buyer clicks "Checkout".

HOERA !!! Great stuff -- Thank you so much Etsy Admin for taking it to the next level -- we all appreciate it ;)

Hey there, my comment is checkout related.... I've ALWAYS thought that etsy should inform seller of which payment method was chosen. When the email comes to the inbox, it doesn't specify. For example, I often pay via money order, and if I simply checkout and don't leave any special msg to seller, invariably, the seller contacts me, and acts like they have no idea that I've selected the money order option. I've even had paypal invoices sent to me, despite my choosing money order.... Also, the comment above by Lunaversoul is a true issue. It took me awhile to realize several buyers had made immediate payment, and it never reflected that in the invoice! This made me look bad as the seller, because it took longer to ship the items than it should have! Thanks for your work! ami

April 15, 2009 at 11:52 a.m. silentgoddess

Vanessa, with all due respect, items should not be removed from a seller's store until payment is submitted. This all should happen immediately when "Checkout" is clicked not after.

April 15, 2009 at 11:53 a.m. GoTo

Yay--thanks!

monamiga--There's always been a line in the transaction email that says:

The buyer chose the following form of payment: XXXX

The XXXX has what payment method they chose in it.

April 15, 2009 at 4:35 p.m. olivebrown

April 15, 2009 at 5 p.m. michon

I really like the last part, where it tells them they have payments left to make. Looking forward to more improvements!

April 15, 2009 at 5:14 p.m. intrinsicimagination

Great! Hope this helps! It's so disapointing to see that you have a sale and find out that there is no payment. Thanks for trying to improve the process!

This would be great. The checkout is simple to me but I've directed many people to my shoppe and they have been confused by the checkout through etsy then PayPal.

I agree with silentgoddess.

I also hate the fact that the checkout page says "Each order is not complete until you pay." Several non-paying buyers have argued in the past that this means a purchase is not actually a purchase until they pay. I have a lot of non-paying buyers and I waste an incredible amount of time chasing them down, usually without success.

I also think Etsy needs to send non-paying buyers reminders when they haven't paid for an item. I feel like sellers don't have the proper leverage when it comes to reminding a buyer that they committed to pay. Most non-paying buyers completely ignore my reminders--however friendly they are--and they even ignore Paypal invoices.

For example, Etsy could make it impossible for a buyer to purchase something until they have paid for all their previous purchases or taken the steps to cancel those transactions. I don't know, just an idea...

I also agree with silentgoddess. There should be some type of buyer accountability, like a "strikes" feature where after 10 times, you have your account suspended for a period of time. If sellers can have their accounts suspended for breaking rules on etsy, so should buyers. I know suspending the account of a buyer means potential sales lost for etsy, but etsy should start protecting the seller better. I hate chasing people down for payment, because I like to have faith but I'm starting to lose my patience for non paying buyers who simply say "I don't want these anymore."

This seems like a good step in the right direction. I do agree with some of the comments about removing items from the store before the payment is made, it should definitely be after. It certainly does waste a lot of the seller's time to track down and coach buyers through this, and the fix does seem simple enough.

Also, I know that this is one one step in a bunch of checkout improvements, but are there plans in the works for calculating taxes before sending the payment info to paypal? I am in NY and paypal doesn't allow for the different sales taxes zones in this state to be calculated accurately. I have to send refunds to be compliant with the state tax code, and frankly, this comes off very unprofessional, not to mention extremely annoying when it comes to bookkeeping. It would also be very helpful to be able to mark in the listing if the item is subject to sales tax. In NY, clothing under $110 is not taxed, but there is no way that paypal knows what is taxable and what isn't. Are there plans to make checkout "smart"? I really appreciate that Admin are listening to sellers, but lots of improvements still need to made.

While steps have been made in the right direction the wording is still ambiguous! As an example "Each order is not complete until you pay each seller" well to a buyer that just means that they haven't really bought the item but that is so contrary to how the shopping cart system works here on etsy! How about a big red stop sign that comes up when a buyer clicks to place an item in their cart that says "by placing this item in your cart, you the buyer are agreeing to pay the seller" and to have another button where they have to confirm with legal verbage attached to that. I have had more non paying buyers tell me when they finally respond that they didn't intend to purchase the item since in their mind they didn't since they haven't gone through checkout.

Etsy your checkout system is broken...fix it!

While a lot of people hate ebay and their system, it results in a lot less non payers than etsy does. I haven't had nearly the non payers there in 5 years that I've had here on etsy in a little over a year...something to be said about a system that works!

I really like the "Commit to Buy" wording. Simple & easy to understand without sounding like a mobster's going to come to your house & break your knees. ;)

Perfect! Great news! :)

April 22, 2009 at 1:52 a.m. freshieandzero

That makes total sense - I love it! It's much clearer than before - hopefully it will clear up buyer confusion!

April 22, 2009 at 9 a.m. beckababe

wonderful changes, TY!

April 26, 2009 at 7:56 p.m. nightcloud2

a final sale should be made of two parts to be complete-- the buyer checking out the item or items -- and the seller OK ing the sale to finish the process - only then the item is taken out

I would like to see an integrated option for Google Checkout. I've had mostly negative experiences with Paypal and I prefer not to use them.
