Tech Updates: Beta Release of Etsy Bill Payment with PayPal

Sellers,

Today, Etsy is kicking off a beta test of functionality that allows sellers to pay their Etsy bills via PayPal. Many of you have asked to be able to pay your Etsy bills with PayPal. International sellers in particular overwhelmingly prefer PayPal as a method of payment, and sellers have told us it would be convenient to pay their Etsy bill with the same PayPal account they use to collect payments from sales on Etsy.

A small group of Etsy sellers will begin testing this functionality today. Once we have their feedback, we will communicate more details about the timing of a full launch. Details will be announced here on the Etsy Blog, in the Etsy Forums and to the Etsy News email list.

We have also updated the Etsy-to-PayPal experience: Etsy branding has been incorporated into the PayPal checkout pages linked from Etsy. This is designed to reduce buyer confusion during checkout. Now, when a buyer is sent to PayPal from Etsy during the Etsy checkout process, the Etsy logo will be visible at the top of the pages where the payment is made. We think this will help lessen the confusion experienced by some new buyers on Etsy, as we've seen in user testing, research, survey results and feedback from the community.

Apologies for injecting a word of caurtion into the general thankfulness & merrymaking, but does this mean Etsy will increase the fees to cover yheir PayPal charges? I for one resent the high fees charged by PayPal, especially as they go into the same pockets as eBay fees, which are also extortionate & a significant part of the reason I moved operations here. (OK, along with quality of items for sale, community spirit, general friendliness of everyone, etc!)

So far, I haven't had any problems paying Etsy with my debit card, despite the fact that it's a cross-border transaction.

Hi,

These are good news, especially for the fact that one can work with a small amount, although nowadays one can ask for a virtual credit card.
It's important that Etsy guarantees the deletion of the credit card data, if the user so wishes, in case of moving to Paypal.
I also think that the user should be abble to chose to have both ways active.

I find this a bit confusing. I have been paying with PayPal from the beginning, when I opened my store in November of 2008. I didn't think this was a new thing :)

Interesting timing. I got an e-mail back from Etsy regarding my question, why can't I pay through PayPal and the next day they announced the Beta test.
