Etsy's Handmade Blog
Tech Updates: Feed Enhancements, Google Base and More

UPDATE 5/13/09: New detailed instructions for scheduled uploads to Google Base below.

We've rolled out some small but important improvements to Etsy's RSS feeds. (What is RSS? Check out  this post for an introduction.) These enhancements are designed to make Etsy's feeds more discoverable, useful and visible.

What's changed?

1. Shop feeds now include thumbnail images! They're also much easier to find. Previously shop feeds could only be found on shop pages. Now, in addition to shop pages, every item listing page on Etsy includes a link to that shop's feed. Look for it below the "Bookmark and Share" link under "Page Tools":

2. We've also made Favorites feeds easier to find. Did you know how easy it is to keep up with the latest items from your favorite sellers, or your friends' favorite sellers? All public Favorites pages now include a prominent link to the associated Favorites feed:

3. RSS autodiscovery has been implemented throughout the site.
This means Etsy feeds will be easier to discover by both people and search engines. If you use the Mozilla Firefox web browser, you'll know you're on a page with a feed when you see the little RSS icon in the web address field. You can click it to access the feed.

4. Shop feeds now come pre-formatted for easy upload to Google Base!
Uploading items to Google Base is a great way for sellers to help Google — specifically Google Product Search — find their items. Shoppers will then be able to find sellers' items via the 'Shopping' link on the upper left of any Google search page.

To schedule uploads from your shop feed to Google Base, you'll need to roll up your tech sleeves a bit. Here are updated instructions courtesy of the Etsy Technology Help blog:

  1. Log into Google Base with your Google account.
  2. Click on the "Settings" tab and fill in your information. When entering your website address, use the use the format etsy.com/shop/username instead of username.etsy.com
  3. Click "Save Changes."
  4. Click the "My Items" tab.
  5. Click the "Data feeds" tab.
  6. Click the "New data feed" button.
  7. Select your country.
  8. For "Select the type of item in your data feed," select "Products."
  9. For "Select the type of the data feed you're registering," select "googlebase."
  10. Your data feed filename is your shop name followed by .xml. Example: EtsyLabs.xml
  11. Click the "Register Data Feed" button.
  12. Refresh the page.
  13. Click the blue "edit" link right next to your xml filename.
  14. Change the encoding setting to UTF-8 and change the File format to XML. All other settings can be left the same.
  15. Go to your Etsy shop and scroll down to the bottom right. Click "Subscribe to shop feed." Copy the address of the page.
  16. Back on Google Base, click on "create" right next to "Schedule."
  17. Paste the address you copied from your Etsy page into "Url of file." (It will look like this, with "rss" in the URL: http://www.etsy.com/rss_shop.php?user_id=5029420.) You can choose how often you would like it to upload your items. Click "Schedule" and your shop items will now be fetched regularly by Google and should start to appear in Google Product search results for the keywords in your item titles within a few hours of being processed.

Google base is an excellent idea for sellers...definitely give it a go. Helps the items to be seen and found more easily in search results. :)

Jan. 9, 2009 at 2:07 a.m. yournest

Oh, how cool! I looooove RSS. MmmYum.

And the crocheted cacti in "related items" (not sure how it especially relates, but I'm not complaining) are AWESOME! I might have to get a few for my sis, who claims she can't keep any plants alive.

Jan. 9, 2009 at 11:14 a.m. GreenSpaceGoods

Hooray!!!!!! I've been wanting those thumbnails forever! Thanks so much :)

AWESOME - Thanks!

Jan. 9, 2009 at 4:48 p.m. rockerbaby

It is awesome what you guys did , it is a great feature , but what I think would really be helpful to all of us who sell children’s clothing or clothing in general , it would really help to have a drop size menu, which I think it so helpful to all , easy on the buyer and life saver for the seller

Jan. 9, 2009 at 5 p.m. creativeborders

Great!!!

Jan. 9, 2009 at 9:59 p.m. Studio618

I did it, I think. Can't wait to see the results. Thanks Etsy, for all these technical help.

Jan. 10, 2009 at 10:12 a.m. lilybrush

manual uploading could be substituted for an automatic schedule if only the following URL scheme would also lead to MY_SHOP's rss:

http://MY_SHOP.etsy.com/rss_shop.php?...

for instance, if I could use this URL to access my shop's rss:
http://lilybrush.etsy.com/rss_shop.ph...

instead of
http://www.etsy.com/rss_shop.php?user...

Jan. 10, 2009 at 5:27 p.m. Thinkoutsidethebox

My confusion is this..hoping someone a bit more savvy than me can help..Some of us know that there is a popular site that we can use to upload our shop csv files and add it to Google base feeds. Would using the rss method above, give us the same results or will the rss feed added to Google base allow for our shop's continually added items to automatically be uploaded to Google base? The option available to us through the other site with our csv files uploaded and saved in xml format is only good for the items in our shops at the time we create the xml file. Any further additions of new shop items have to be either manually uploaded one by one or we have to create an entirely new xml file and then feed it to Google base. Anyone know the ansewr here or even what I am talking about? LOL!

Jan. 11, 2009 at 12:53 p.m. sean11

Thinkoutsidethebox, please see the updated instructions above for scheduled uploads to Google Base.

Jan. 11, 2009 at 6:38 p.m. dogties

Awesome.
Thanks for continually making things bigger, better, & easier.

Jan. 12, 2009 at 7:27 a.m. XOHandworks

sean11- I'm sure your answer above was clear to you, but for some of us unfamiliar with this ... are you saying "yes, following the updated instructions for scheduled uploads will continually update Google base and only needs to be done once" ?

Jan. 12, 2009 at 7:42 a.m. XOHandworks

btw - to find the "Register Your Data Feed" section, click My Items, then Data Feed, then New Data Feed ...
in case anyone else has trouble finding it like I did

Jan. 12, 2009 at 8:33 a.m. XOHandworks

My first scheduled upload failed. Here's the error message: "We didn't understand some of the XML formatting in your file. You may be missing a tag or have a nesting or formatting error"

Is this something I can fix or this an error on Etsy's end?

Jan. 13, 2009 at 2:28 p.m. lindabutterfly

Yahoo says the feed can't be added. Keeps saying try later. I keep trying. Have contacted Yahoo...anyone else got this problem? (I have firefox.)

Jan. 13, 2009 at 5:48 p.m. yummyink

Great Tool! Thanks for sharing!

Jan. 14, 2009 at 1:06 p.m. creationsinglass

Great, just did this instead of letsets!

Jan. 15, 2009 at 6:43 p.m. LazyTcrochet

This could be spelled out in greater detail somewhere on the site. As it is, there are tidbits of information all through the forums.
I am still getting errors when I use Ety's feed. I changed the web address as described above, but when I click "edit" next to the feed, I don't see "encoding" or UTF-8 anywhere.

Jan. 18, 2009 at 11:55 p.m. inoudidsattic

On my data feed it says "Missing Condition". It is my understanding that it needs to have each item marked one of the following: New, Used, Refurbished. I had gone through and adjusted a few titles to included the word refurbished, then some of the tags I used new or refurbished. (We are selling recycled album jacket coasters and warped vinyl bowls.)
I did find and selected the UTF-8...anyone know what that stands for?
Any suggestions would be appreciated on how to correct the 'missing conditions' for the quality of the feed.
Take care, Mary

Jan. 22, 2009 at 6:45 a.m. lindabutterfly

I am a tad muddled about stage 3. Do I JUST add this:
shop.xml

Jan. 22, 2009 at 7:20 a.m. lindabutterfly

I did that. It all worked. Pleased, I have an active feed.

Jan. 25, 2009 at 11:27 p.m. suchprettycolors

Thanks, this is great! :) It only works for our most recent 100 items, though, is that right?

Jan. 27, 2009 at 12:20 p.m. VictoriaB2007

I did it Wow I was surprised how easy it was !

Jan. 27, 2009 at 6:49 p.m. 24Paws

Thank you for the info!!

Jan. 28, 2009 at 8:44 p.m. crossties

My upload failed and I received the message "mismatched XML tag" How do I correct this?

Jan. 29, 2009 at 4:36 p.m. roundabout

Just got this updated to automatically load to Google base - thank you so much for adding this feature!

Jan. 30, 2009 at 1:15 a.m. Cathysjewels

What? Can someone translate please?

Jan. 31, 2009 at 1:17 p.m. pastperfect

I followed all of the steps and continually get this Error message that the scheduled upload failed =
"We didn't understand some of the XML formatting in your file. You may be missing a tag or have a nesting or formatting error.
We found a mismatched XML tag."

It would be great to get this to work. What is going on? How is this corrected?

Manual uploading of all items using LetsEts works perfectly.

Feb. 3, 2009 at 10:24 a.m. cottonpurr

I am getting this error:
We didn't understand some of the XML formatting in your file. You may be missing a tag or have a nesting or formatting error.
We found a mismatched XML tag.

Both warnings point to the same bad line #24.

Feb. 13, 2009 at 1:16 a.m. sean11

Just wanted to note that we've updated the selling FAQ with Google Base instructions as well:

http://www.etsy.com/faq_selling.php#f...

Please feel free to convo me if you're having trouble or have questions on scheduling uploads. It is rather tricky but the nice thing is you only need to do it once -- your items will be fetched automatically at the schedule you choose once you get it running.

Feb. 13, 2009 at 2:56 a.m. HappyCloudMoments

Awesome! Thank you!

Feb. 18, 2009 at 7:50 p.m. FilzFelt

very helpful.... I was so lost

March 1, 2009 at 5:22 p.m. luxandlove

well i've done this, it seems to be taking quite a while, its been a couple of hours so far. i was definitely lost trying to follow the google instructions so thank you.

March 1, 2009 at 10 p.m. PapayaTree

I keep getting an error message when I put in the feed URL. I'm sure it's the correct URL. When I click update, the window goes to google error window "page not found". Can anyone help me?

March 2, 2009 at 10:46 a.m. CarolBradley

I am also getting an error message at the final step, which is scheduling. When I enter the "url of file," I get these results:

My shop name from the address bar, "http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5320312", gets the message "domain name must match home page's domain".

Entering "http://carolbradley.etsy.com" or "http://www.carolbradley.etsy.com" gets the message "invalid url".

March 2, 2009 at 10:50 a.m. CarolBradley

I figured out the problem. Never mind.

March 3, 2009 at 1:13 p.m. luxandlove

I've followed the instructions and everything seems to be OK from the Google base side, it says all my items are 'Published and searchable' however they don't come up when i search for them in google shopping. in fact in the 'shop names' category at the bottom of each search page, Etsy doesn't even come up. Am i doing something wrong? I've been back over it to double check but i did everything right.

March 13, 2009 at 8:45 a.m. KimVGlass

I'm getting the same error message as cottonpurr, except my bad line is 19. This will be wonderful...when I get it to work :)

March 20, 2009 at 4:02 p.m. stilettogirl

I got the upload to work using scheduling, but most of my items are still listed as searchable soon, with the problem being that the attributes and condition are missing. How do you get google to include these without manually editing each item? (If I edit, the edits are lost during scheduled updates). Does Using Let's Ets eliminate this problem in some way?

April 10, 2009 at 7:26 a.m. dlkdesigns

Thank you~

April 20, 2009 at 5:25 p.m. GranGrahamsTable

So easy to follow your instructions, thanks heaps!

Please help with missing conditions.

May 4, 2009 at 8:05 p.m. Flourisheshome

I followed all the wonderful instructions. Found were to put everything just fine. When I schedule, it tells me Ooops. Non existant page. Why? It says active next to schedule, but it did not update. I have no idea what is wrong!!! Please help.

May 4, 2009 at 9:03 p.m. AnuraDesignStudio

Help!

I too followed instructions. Seemed pretty simple. I too received the Ooops message. However when I went back later, new info was there.

Now I have tried about 10 times over 2 days to upload and get this message: upload failed. no items are live. Error: We don't understand your delimiter.

What am I doing wrong? What is my delimiter? The only thing I wasn't sure about when entering my info was the .xml file. I used my shop name with .xml. Is that the correct way to do it?

Does anyone have any suggestions? Please help.

May 6, 2009 at 10:19 p.m. GrandmaMarilyns

I am having the same problem as Flourisheshome and AnuraDesignStudio. It works fine if I put my shop link in there but I try to put the RSS feed link in there, it says Ooops. Non existant page. But I did a copy and paste.

May 12, 2009 at 4:15 p.m. LavenderField

i got following message in red when pasting my RSS feed address onto "Url of file":

Domain name must match home page's domain

Please help!

May 13, 2009 at 7:17 p.m. mrsfatface

I am also having a problem with the scheduling. It keeps telling me "domain name must match home page's domain".
How do I get around that? I copied and pasted the web address from the rss feed.

May 14, 2009 at 2:15 a.m. ShoozieShoes

Very helpful, thanks so much!

It is very helpful information! Thanks!

May 19, 2009 at 9:06 p.m. MaruMaru

I did everything in the instructions, but is it supposed to say "failed"? Does it take a day or two to become active? I scheduled mine as daily but have yet to see anything. We don't have to upload anything either?

May 21, 2009 at 10:18 a.m. dvinedesigns

awesome!! Thanks!!

May 21, 2009 at 10:58 a.m. capow

that was kind of complicated, but I think I got it! Hope it helps my shop grow! :)

May 23, 2009 at 1:56 p.m. evoLOVEtion

Thank you so much for helping us with so many tools that I otherwise would not have known about! Thank you, thank you!

May 24, 2009 at 12:45 a.m. intrinsicvalue

I haven't been able to get googlebase to work for me either. Any suggestions?

May 26, 2009 at 10:17 a.m. ellecools

Now Google Base is rejecting my Lets Ets uploads...I think it has to do with the change to the way the prices are displayed as USD.

I tried the method above and I am also getting failed messages as mentioned by others:

Error: We don't understand your delimiter.

May 26, 2009 at 11:07 a.m. Buttonsandsuch

It doesn't seem to work for me, I don't get the blue edit button. Does my being out of the USA make a difference?

May 27, 2009 at 3:58 a.m. uniquedichroic

I'm also getting the "Domain name must match home page's domain" message, and it's not working.
How can I fix this???
I've seen a few other people here ask the same question, but I can find the answer?

May 27, 2009 at 9:17 a.m. ellecools

I deleted the account (the specific etsy-shop account that wasn't working-not my google base account) and re-entered everything as above. The instructions are pretty simple-I don't think I made a mistake the first time.

In any case, it worked fine the second time and my items are now live.

Buttonsandsuch - I'm in Canada - it shouldn't make a difference.

May 28, 2009 at 10:15 a.m. BellaLili

Thanks for the instructions. I did what ellecools did as well. It was easier to recreate my acct with the simple instructions as above instead of modifying what was there. I kept getting errors that way.

May 30, 2009 at 7:42 p.m. laurabailliedesigns

Great article, so easy to follow and set up! Must wai patiently now for results.

May 31, 2009 at 8:34 a.m. fiveforty

I keep getting this error message:
Domain name must match home page's domain

I have tried over and over, deleting and starting fresh, it is not working for me.

June 6, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. lynsi

Thanks, this was easier to understand!

June 6, 2009 at 3:11 p.m. SeizeTheNight

this really helped! :)

June 6, 2009 at 5:12 p.m. mksupplies

I had the same problem:
Domain name must match home page's domain

I think it was step 2 that finally fixed it - make sure you putting in your shop number not the name
i.e. for my shop:
http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=...
instead of
http://mksupplies.etsy.com

Hope that helps

This was extremely helpful!! Awesome instructions...thanks so much!

June 19, 2009 at 1:01 p.m. DownToTheWireDesigns

This seems very helpful.

While I was setting this up, I was looking at the website optimizer demo on my Google Analytics account and could not help but notice that a lot of what they say is needed for a successful website (headline, image, promotional text, and call to action) is not available in our specific shop homepages.

I have long thought that it would be useful to have the option of a larger, bolder title for our shop announcements (a headline); and what I really think would be helpful would be having the shop announcement text BELOW the featured items (image-- though often hidden under the shop announcement text). This would give people a taste of your work when they first come to your shop regardless of how long your shop announcement is (how many times have you gone to a shop and have had to scroll down past a lot of instructional text to see what it is that they sell?!) AND it would give you the opportunity to PROMOTE the featured items in a new way (promotional text). For instance, you could put those three items on sale or you could have them up as part of a theme and could use the text to point out that theme (Father's Day, e.g.). This might cut into Etsy's showcase sales, but I have never found the showcases to be all that effective and increased sales will boost Etsy's revenues anyway, so I don't see Etsy losing anything by doing it.

Anyway, I found this feature helpful-- thanks for making it available. I just also found it ironic that most of the things that Google says are needed for a successful website are not available in our individual shops.

June 25, 2009 at 2:57 p.m. SuperiorStones

I did it! Not too bad. . .

It is my understanding that google base will be disabling individual feeds from etsy shops (apparently some already) in preparation for a change in 2010 which will require etsy to maintain google base for the entire site. Has anyone else heard this? Admins, does etsy have a plan in place to do this?

Thanks!

Thanks for the info! FYI: for anyone going to do this now… Google Base has split out into Base and Merchant Center. You follow the same basic instructions as above, but in the merchant center rather than Google base.
Thanks again!

I'm doing something wrong and I'm not sure what it is?

When I go to 'Create' in Upload Schedule and put in the feed address http://www.etsy.com/rss_shop.php?user......
I get this error message "To schedule a fetch, a valid home page is needed".

Any pointers? Thanks

Can anyone tell me what to do, I'm stuck. On step 8. For "Select the type of item in your data feed," select "Products."

On the actual new data feed page it says to select item type, but only offers a few options. It does offer a selection for custom type, but it will not take "products." The other options don't fit the description of what I need.

Help?

thanks for advice can't wait to try this

Nov. 12, 2009 at 11:51 p.m. castawayvintage

i also found 'products' is not offered, and can't find a comparable listing, like 'clothing' or 'apparel' for what im listing??

Nov. 13, 2009 at 12:09 a.m. castawayvintage

was receiving 'error' emails about non working xml tags. was having problems with this method, particularly 'products', finally took the custom tag for clothes. Also having problems with finding url in subscribing to shop feed, being redirected to igoogle, but found it by right clicking the shop feed link to 'show properties', then filled in that url in scheduling google base updates. hope this helps anyone else having same problem
