Tech Updates: Report this Post

Today, we launched a report this post feature to Etsy's forums.  The Community Team at Etsy always appreciates your help in keeping a lively and fun community atmosphere when participating in the forums and we hope this new feature will help make your posting experience run much smoother!  The report this post feature should be used when you see a post that doesn't fit within Etsy's forum guidelines and you want to alert the Community Team.

Here's what you'll see on each forum post:

When you click the "report this post" text, it will take you to a screen that looks like this:

Once you have filled out the necessary information in the submission form, just click submit report and your report will be sent directly to the community inbox completely anonymously!  This should make the forums run a lot smoother and help the Community Team stay on top of concerns amidst the community in a timely fashion.

Thanks again for all your help and hope you enjoy,

Etsy

Thanks! This is great :)

Oh this is wonderful! I hope it will make things smoother for the admin as well as the members.

Thanks for this!

With anyone being able to "report this post" with a simple click on a link, exactly HOW is this going to make admin's job easier? Wouldn't you expect that this would give you *more* to do if you have to investigate every post that gets reported?

While I like the framework of this system, I don't think it's a good idea to make it anonymous.

People should be accountable for their actions, which includes reporting posts. Making it anonymous leaves the system wide open to abuse. People will report each other for personal reasons and all sorts of imagined calling-out.

May I ask what is the reasoning behind making the system anonymous?

I think it would make a lot more sense to have a "report this thread" link at the bottom of the page. Having a bright blue link under every post is kind of overwhelming to the mind and way too tempting. I mean, you're probably going to have to lock the whole thread anyway if there's a problem so why make it reporting specific posters. It would also save you quite a bit of work.

I'm assuming that the reporter will be anonymous to the reportee, not to admin. Hence, I support this! Yay!

Thanks for helping us keep the Forums in the spirit if Etsy! :)

May 6, 2008 at 5:35 p.m. loosewirestudio

It makes sense to me to report a specific post, not the entire thread. This will pinpoint the issue for Admin. Especially helpful in long threads. :)

May 6, 2008 at 5:39 p.m. crimsoncat05

aren't you liable to be inundated with hundreds of "reportings" for a thread in the wrong area, for instance, or is there something that would tell me "this post has already been reported" if I try to do it and it's already been found??

and, how would anyone "KNOW" for certain that a post is from a sock puppet account- aren't you encouraging speculation with this option??

loosewirestudio says:

-----------------

No, it's anonymous to admin as well. Matt just posted in the thread stating so.

May 6, 2008 at 5:48 p.m. stellaloella

Loosewire has the right idea! :)

Reporting has always been anonymous, in that we don't pass on who reported something to the subject of the report. Flagging works this way too.

This actually will cut down on the amount of work for the Community Team because they can more easily focus their attention, with the users' help. And it's helpful to member because they can more easily alert staff to posts that may need attention.

We're not asking members to be the judge, but merely give us a head's up when a thread needs an Admin to review it.

May 6, 2008 at 5:51 p.m. loosewirestudio

So, the flagger does remain anonymous, even to Admin? Hmm... this might be a challenge for you guys.

May 6, 2008 at 5:55 p.m. esdesigns

this is really good, thanks!

May 6, 2008 at 5:58 p.m. loosewirestudio

Matt recanted in the forums thread. Yay! :)

matt says:
Hi,

I was wrong.

The reportee does not know they have been reported, but we are able to see the username of the reporter. in short, only you and Etsy will know you reported a post. Sorry, I was confused and spoke too soon.

May 6, 2008 at 6:03 p.m. quirke

Ahh, that is good news!

May 6, 2008 at 6:26 p.m. designsbycher

Seems like a good thing (in theory)... let's hope it's not abused.

May 6, 2008 at 6:43 p.m. Betsy4Etsy

This is a good idea! I hope it cuts down on the amount of misplaced posts/calling out/other bad stuff that happens in the forums.

May 6, 2008 at 6:45 p.m. DJeffries

oh, I am glad that admin will be able to see the reporter. I would guess that a member that repeatedly reports posts that DO NOT break etsy rules (for their own reasons - personality clashes or competing shops) would receive some type of notice regarding frivolous or vengeful reporting.

May 6, 2008 at 6:48 p.m. GranKnit

Now how about a "report this listing" button that works like the one in alchemy for the items listed. That would be even better than this. There are much less users on the forums than there are listing stuff

May 6, 2008 at 7:01 p.m. eclipse

This looks great! It looks so much more efficient than email and I bet it makes the forum admins much more productive. A similar form system for flagging items is next on the agenda, I hope?

I do have one question. Matt clarified that Etsy will know the username of the flagger, but the reported poster will not. I think that's wise. But people can also flag posts while logged out so how will those be identified? Should this be a feature, like posting, which is only available to logged in registered members?

May 6, 2008 at 7:26 p.m. allisonstrine

ahhh.... veddy interesting! Anything that makes it easier for Etsy Admin to keep tabs on we wild forum posters is all right in my book!

May 6, 2008 at 7:43 p.m. Timeless

I thought we already had plenty of self-appointed forum police. Guess I was wrong.....

May 6, 2008 at 8:25 p.m. anandi

Woo hoo, this is fantastic. I hope the upcoming shop item flagging functionality is this simple and awesome :)

May 6, 2008 at 8:58 p.m. Decadence2artbar

I like it, thank you! Scrambling for the right email address or convo address when a post is going up in flames takes too much time sometimes.

Maybe this will help clean up the forums!

May 6, 2008 at 9:28 p.m. annalaura

I have to say that seeing "Report This Post" up to ten times in one thread messes with my head as that is all I read when I am skimming a page.

It starts to make me wonder if I should be reporting this post as that is what I see in front of me, like some kind of subliminal message telling me what to do.

I think I would prefer it more if it was a little less invasive, maybe a small logo or something. You know it is there, but it isn't telling you what to do.

May 6, 2008 at 10:47 p.m. SalmonStreetStudio

Easier to be the Narc now, woo hoo.
(Actually I only report abusive or self destructive ones that are damaging but have been known to forget to paste the url thus making Rob's job harder so Thanks)!

I'm glad to understand this now as I thought someone reported all the threads I was reading. Overwhelming to see it so many times.
I have noticed unbecoming behavior, recently, you might say it was "UGLY".
I wish it could be one "report this thread" at bottom of each page.
Thanks for caring and trying to make things better.

This is Frigging Awesome and about time

Thank You Admin for listening to us once again

May 7, 2008 at 9:40 p.m. Luminosities

I think this is going to open a big, ugly can of worms. I can just imagine how massively this is going to be abused.

It's also going to make the free and open atmosphere of the forums take a nose dive, with everybody worried about saying what they think lest someone misinterpret it and report it.

Sorry, guys, but me no likey.

May 8, 2008 at 9:48 a.m. Joujoux

This is a great idea as the forums are abused on a regular basis. I myself have avoided posting for months now because of this and only go in there now to see about bugs. I think its sad that people find an idea to make things better and more buisness like to be "big brother" and against free speech. People really need to get their priorities straight if not being able to abuse, insult, call out, and generally treat others like dirt is ruffling their feathers. thanks for using this new feature to help try and make the forums a better place as they have gotten really sad lately.
