Etsy in Action: Bay Area Maker Faire in San Mateo

For anyone who's ever been to an Austin or Bay Area Maker Faire, I'm sure you'll echo my sentiments that it is a respectable spectacle filled with spectacular spectacles. With an emphasis on the experiments of tinkerers from around the globe, it's a great way to get inspiration for new projects as we head into summer. This weekend's event in San Mateo, California, May 30 - 31, 2009, will not disappoint!

While this g33k gala is pretty out there, it isn't just for geeks. Maker Faire is a family-friendly event and attracts all walks of makers and explorers. In my previous jaunts to these events, I've met an architect who builds portable, modular, panoramic towers the size of a four story building. I've met people who build Tesla coils, just so they can have sword fights with lightning. I've met children who have built functioning robots, and bicycle enthusiasts who have built pedal-powered carnival rides out of recycled cycles. I've met people who use walnuts for gasoline, and a man who built a full size Babbage difference engine #2. As you might imagine, the list goes on and on, but certainly this is the hub where computer programmers, Steampunks, the Burning Man crowd, and the typical family of four can come together and rejoice in the marvels of mankind's imagination.

Naturally, you should expect to see some Etsy folks there too, so if you're coming to the Maker Faire, stop into the Bazaar Bizarre craft area and see the faces behind some of the glorious Etsy shops you know and love.

Tax Time for Artists: Give Good Deeds Their Due

Chuck from DownToTheWireDesigns checked in with us after his New Year's Resolution to donate a piece of his jewelry every week for the entire year. Committing to a project like that is quite an undertaking for any artist, and Chuck wants to share an important message about a new piece of legislation that would improve the way artists are compensated for their charitable donations. 'Tis tax season after all...

There is currently a proposed change to the tax code pending in the U.S. House of Representatives that could have a profound effect on all U.S. artists if passed. The proposal, H.R. 1126, also known as the Artist-Museum Partnership Act of 2009, seeks to address the issue of artists donating their work to charitable groups and institutions. As the law currently stands, any person in the arts donating their art work is only allowed to deduct the cost of the materials involved in producing the art work. This resolution seeks to change that situation and would allow for a fair market value deduction.

You can follow the progress of the resolution at this site, and you can locate and email your representative through this site.

I would encourage everyone to contact their elected representatives in support of this resolution so that it does not languish without getting a floor vote. Getting this passed is a basic issue of fairness. The tax code as it is now written discourages charitable giving in these hard times and it undervalues the work of artists.

To illustrate the absurdity of the current law, consider the following: If I donate a piece that I could normally sell for $100 but that only costs me $10 in materials, I can only deduct that $10 on my tax return. My time, design abilities, and technical skills are not valued at all in the tax code as it now exists. However, if someone else buys that same piece of work for the $100 that I normally charge, they could then donate it to charity and deduct the full $100 market value irrespective of the cost of the materials used in its creation. This is simply not fair, and it hurts both the artists and the groups which rely on those artists in their fundraising efforts.

Again, if you feel that the current law is unfair, please take a moment to send a quick email to your elected representatives encouraging them to support the resolution. All you need to do is write them a single line saying, “I am writing to encourage you to support H.R. 1126, the Artist-Museum Partnership Act of 2009.” If you feel inspired you can elaborate by telling your elected official how the current law affects you, and how the change would be an improvement. Try to keep it short and be respectful.

CPSIA Action Kit and Community Chat

Thanks to all who attended last Friday's community chat. As promised, I have a compiled relevant links and resources to be used in educating yourself, spreading the word, and taking action around the CPSIA. I willl be updating this document from time to time, and will be sure to post updates as they arise.

I have not included a section on proposed exemptions at this point, as I am awaiting confirmation from the CPSC on where we stand exactly. I will update the document as soon as I hear back.

Renegade Craft Fair: Chicago, IL, September 13 & 14

Chicago's 6th Annual Renegade Craft Fair is just around the corner. Come out September 13 & 14 to see over 300 of the best craftsters from all over the country and abroad, and stay for the live music at the end of the day! Find all these happenings along Division St. between Damen & Hermitage in Wicker Park.

American Craft Council: New York, NY, September 18

Bringing the best of the old and new together in the historic American Craft Council library, the Summer in the City Salon Series aims to further conversation and foster ideas about the state of craft in contemporary culture. In the next lecture in the series, KnitKnit's Sabrina Gschwandtner, Knitting Nation's Liz Collins, and New York Times columnist Rob Walker weigh in on craft's role in addressing issues of urgency in our world today.

Crafty Bastards: Washington, DC, Volunteer Opportunity

The fine folks at Crafty Bastards are looking for volunteers to help out at this year's fair.

If you'd like to volunteer, the two shifts you can pick to work are: 5am-10am or 2pm-7pm. The morning shift helps with booth set up and getting vendors' wares from their cars to their booth spaces. The later shift works at the CP booths, and also helps with clean up. Any shift that you can work is greatly appreciated! Breakfast and lunch will be provided by Whole Foods.

Aside from the reward of helping out the crafting community and working with a great group of people, you'll also be eligible to receive a gift bag ($100 value), including a limited edition Crafty T-shirt. All crafters who volunteer for a 5 hour shift will be in a drawing to win a free, non-juried booth space at Crafty Bastards 2009! If you work more than 5 hours, you'll get a bonus entry into the drawing to double your chances of winning. We'll pick two winners from our pool of volunteers. You must sign up before Friday, September 12th at 5pm in order to take advantage of the free booth drawing.

Providence, RI: September 6 - 21, 2008

The 10th Annual Pawtucket Arts Festival kicks off this week with a wide variety of visual, performance and participatory arts events by regional, national and internationally-known artists. Be sure to stop by and visit the RI Etsy Team on September 13 and 14, where over ten local Etsy artists will be representing Arts In RI with a huge booth set-up.

This week's line up of events includes Dragonboat Races, an antique and classic car show, antique appraisals, children's theatre, music, poetry, dancing, juried art exhibits and design competitions, film screenings and walking tours. Northampton, MA: September 5 - 6, 2008

Get away for the weekend and check out the adorable little town of Northampton, MA. Home to thousands of students, artists and musicians, the town is filled with great shops, restaurants, bars and coffee houses as well as several performance venues.

This weekend the Twist Fair will be showcasing original handmade goods and art from over 50 of the region's most talented crafters and artists. Two days of shopping start Friday evening on September 5 with DJ beats and adult beverages. It's less than two hours from Boston and only three hours from NYC, so it's a great excuse to escape the city and plan a weekend getaway. Asheville, NC : September 7

Arts 2 People is excited to bring you the seventh annual FREE, Lexington Ave Arts and Fun Festival. Three blocks of Asheville's scenic N. Lexington Ave will be lined with local art, food, beer and street performers on Sunday, September 7 from 11:00 am – 10:00 pm. (Located between College Street and the I-240 overpass.) The street will be brimming with a celebration of Asheville's diverse and unique culture.

The entertainment schedule includes three stages and two courtyards of music and performance, featuring rock and roll, indie pop, funk, folk, ragtime, reggae, world beat, singer songwriters, bluegrass, old time, drummers, clowns, magicians, contortionists, belly dancers, modern dancers, vaudeville actors, fire dancers, break dancers and hula hoopers.

The Asheville Etsy Street Team will be making an appearance at LAAFF, bringing hands-on demonstrations on upcycled no-sew grocery bags, a community art project resulting in a creature from the briny deep and an on-site display of their team members' handmade arts and crafts.

Washington, DC : September 10-13

Phase 1 Lounge presents Phasefest, an annual Queer music and arts festival dedicated to the development, exposure and interaction of queer and queer-allied musicians and artists, both national and international. The entertainment schedule includes a line up of talented musicians, crafters, artists, performance artists, activists and comedians.

If you are an artist or crafter who would like to participate in Phasefest, they are still accepting applications for unique local artists, artisans and crafters who also happen to be queer or allies in the gay/lesbian community.

City of Craft returns December 13th for a second year of craft vendors, local craft organisations, installations, activities & more!

This community-based craft culture event invites local community-arts groups, craft based initiatives/projects, studios, and other organizations to do outreach to the public alongside a large-scale curated craft fair and craft-based installations. The 2008 City of Craft event will also feature crafty activities in satellite West Queen West neighbourhood businesses and galleries.

Applications are being sought through August 31st (midnight deadline) for craft vendors, community exhibitors, and craft-based installations. Check cityofcraft for FAQ's, applications and more information as it arises.

Faythe Levine is a filmmaker, author, independent curator and creative director who is currently documenting the rise of DIY and the new wave of art, craft and design in the United States in her film, Handmade Nation. The heart of this new wave of creativity is the community, which is equally influenced by traditional handiwork, modern aesthetics, politics, feminism and art. More information here.

Stop by the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum to see a 20 minute sneak preview from a work-in-progress from the feature film to be released in 2009. After the screening we will hear from Faythe about her thoughts on craft, community, and the nature of DIY. Bazaar Bizarre SF and the curator of Plush You are teaming up to bring you the indie collaboration known as You Bazaar! This event, held on November 2nd, 2008, will feature 30 select craft vendors selling quality handmade wares and a series of rotating workshops throughout the day with some of your favorite plush designers.

The deadline for applying is August 15. This is a first come first served show. Applications will be approved as they come in and will be juried by the organizers, so apply here asap.

Etsy in Action Special: the CNY Group

It is a bit of utopia to meet up with other Etsy sellers to discuss this place we love. Many of us do this through our teams and Flickr groups, but occasionally we have the opportunity to meet face to face. On August 1st, seven of us from Central New York did just that. Organized by Jane Porter aka janetexcat at the studio she and her husband Rob maintain in Hamilton, NY, we sat drinking coffee and discussed everything from picking a catchy username and taking great pictures to the best practices of being seen in searches. Drawing from a 30-mile radius, those of us present immediately bonded over the challenges and triumphs of our Etsy shops.

We live in a very rural region making it logistically challenging to form a team, but the Porter Studio has become a hub of Etsy activity. Jane and Rob believe that “art education helps develop important processes of inquiry, creating, sharing, and community.” They are dedicated supporters of Etsy, wanting to “foster the individual’s creativity and help develop business and marketing skills for artists.” By opening their studio for these free discussions, they are doing just that — at a grassroots level in an area where many of us live miles apart.

This was the third in a series of informal Friday morning discussions designed to educate artists and artisans about the outlet Etsy gives us to sell outside the area. The first two focused on an introduction to selling and this last one was intended to be my story of finding success on Etsy when I could not find a market for my purses locally. As Dana aka danasaylordesigns said afterward, “we all learned something new and I hope to apply some of the tips to grow my business to full-time.”

We intend to keep the conversations, and coffee, flowing, as there are many other small businesses in the area that will benefit from finding an international market on Etsy. By gathering together, in person, we found a sisterhood in the grassroots mentality that is the heart of the Etsy philosophy.

Artscape Baltimore, MD

The Baltimore Etsy Team will be representing Etsy and distributing their new Team postcards at Artscape, the largest free public arts festival in the country. Artscape features 150+ artists, fashion designers and craftspeople. Take a day to check out the visual art exhibits, outdoor sculpture, art cars, photography and incredible live concerts on four outdoor stages, a full schedule of performing arts including dance, opera, theater, fashion, film, experimental music and performances by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Silent Art Auction Fundraiser presented by Poketo & Handmade Nation, Los Angeles, CA

If you haven't heard, first-time director Faythe Levine is setting out to document this here indie craft movement in her upcoming film Handmade Nation. She's been independently funding Handmade Nation with the help of credit cards, community fundraising and private donations and now to get it done she needs all hands on deck! If you're in the Los Angeles area, stop by Poketo and give a hand. Not only will you help out this great cause, but you could walk away with great artwork by Jill Bliss, Kate Bingamun Burt aka kateconsumption, Lisa Congdon, and many more!

The American Craft Council and Etsy present the second Summer in the City Salon Series, with Chanel Kennebrew, aka junkprints in conversation with jeweler Bruce Metcalf as they "explore the complicated relationships among the broad spectrum of craft makers today." In other words, we're talking old school/new school craft and the use of technology to promote and sell. A relevant topic for all Etsy sellers and anyone with an interest in these issues. It's happening in person at the ACC library in New York, NY, AND live in the Virtual Labs. Don't miss it!

Chicago, IL: July 10

For all of you in the Chicago area, the upcoming DIY Style Party is not to be missed! This sew-in will be held at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare-Rosemont. Join in the fun and create your own DIY fashions at the DIY Style design labs and stitch stations equipped with all the supplies. DIY Style gurus will be on hand to guide you through such projects as t-shirt surgery, sewing underwear, making an eco-friendly tote bag, and giving your jeans a distressed look. Be sure to visit the local Etsy sellers on hand and before you go, check out The American Sewing Guild's National Convention, also at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Golden, CO: Call for Entries

If you live in Colorado, it's time to take off your sunglasses and start thinking about the winter holidays. Foothills Art Center, in Golden, Colorado, is looking for talented new artists to join their annual Holiday Market. They are now offering a 10% discount on the application fee for all Etsy artists! The market fills Foothills with unique arts and fine crafts for gift-giving. Admission to HART is free to the public and special programming helps attract over 10,000 shoppers! Works by nearly 200 Colorado artists will be displayed in a stunning holiday setting. The Rock & Shop Market is a great place to shop indoors on a hot day, grab a beer at the bar, listen to the bands, Red Collar and The Secret Theatre, and shop from 30 fantastic designers. Out on the West Coast this weekend is the Craftaluma, Petaluma Craft Mafia’s signature craft show, with the goal "to provide a venue for those in the field of DIY arts and crafting... to educate, support and expose folks who are interested in pursuing the crafty life as an occupation or hobby...." and of course, to be "the greatest show on earth!" Baltimore, Maryland; June 20

Baltimore, Maryland's Charm City Craft Mafia presents Pile of Craft this weekend. Fair organizer Annie Chau of Imogene has this tip for visitors:

"We are huge fans of the Waverly Farmer's Market that takes place just a few blocks north of the event. It opens up at 6 am and runs until noon. It's a great place to pick up some local produce, flowers, and munchies before the show!

Our tip: check out the list of vendors (including lots of Etsians) to plan your shopping in advance!

Montreal, QC, Canada; June 21-22

Heading north, there's Fringe Bazaar, brought to you by the dangerously talented ladies of Craft Mafia Montreal.
With sixty exhibitors and a chance to win one-of-a-kind goodies, you're sure to make a killing — in crafty finds. And if that's not reason enough... Valerie Parizeault, of the Montreal famiglia offers:

The Green Living Expo and Eco-Job Fair
On hand: over 100 exhibits, including organic health and beauty products, an eco-fashion show and green kids' zone. Make sure to print your resume on recycled paper, because top green companies will be represented at the Eco-Job Zone and accepting applications.

Renegade!

The Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn was awesome. If you were there, we hope you stopped by to say hi and stick your head through the plywood picture cut-out thingy and snap a photo of yourself as a twin or a unicorn. Etsy Admins were there all weekend giving out lip balm, stickers, temp tattoos and unloading our stash of crafting supplies by the bagfull. On Saturday in-between bowls of vegan ice cream, I snapped some photos and headed home just before it rained!
