Etsy Finds: Natural Instincts

Growing up, my childhood home was only a few miles in either direction from the beautiful pine barrens and beaches of the Jersey shore. My brother and I spent most of our free time hiking, swimming, observing wildlife and types of trees, bird watching, collecting leaves, shells, driftwood and sea glass. Today's Etsy Finds are inspired by my experiences as a child that have led to my appreciation of nature and my mission to make smart choices in my daily life that contribute to the preservation our planet.

Process: Beach Glass Jewelry with Wildpen

I have met a few cockatoos in my day, but on this day, in early June, I met Sunny and FlaxMan, two Umbrella Cockatoos who help run wildpen, an Etsy shop where they sell handmade (er... beak- and talon-made) gifts. Unfortunately, Hope, a Moluccan Cockatoo was out during the shoot, but she's the third of three cockatoos that make up wildpen.

Sunny likes green sea glass. With her expert vision, and ability to see a 4th color channel, she can spot tiny pieces of glass darting about in the surf from a ways down the beach.

FlaxMan is mostly into a rock and roll lifestyle, but he takes breaks to work on wildpen. It helps to have a little Ani Difranco, Howling Wolf or PJ Harvey on the stereo to jumpstart his creative genius.

Hope is really into the mud masks. She loves mixing and testing personal batches on her feet. Since she couldn't be in the video, we'll indulge in one of her favorites:

Okay, so there is a fair share of (2) human hands involved, but if you buy from this shop, you can bet that a couple of rare birds had something to do with it.

I say rare, but Kate Haley, the birds' human assistant, informed me during the shoot that thousands of domestic parrots or varieties thereof find themselves without homes each year. Sunny, FlaxMan and Hope were all fortunate enough to by rescued by Kate and her husband who brought the birds into their home — a home that allows them to freely express themselves artistically. At the time this video was shot, the birds were donating a percentage of their earnings to charity and spending the rest on personal pleasures. Since the shooting of this video, Kate, Sunny, FlaxMan, and Hope have decided to donate 100% of the proceeds from wildpen to the shopper's choice of one of two bird sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers, to help ensure that more birds like those of wildpen have a safe and fulfilling life.

I suspect that some lucky shopper will walk (or flap) away with the collectible piece that Sunny found and FlaxMan chose for a wrap in this Process Video Feature:

Guest Curator: Angry Chicken

Amy Karol, a.k.a. amykarol, is an artist, author, collector and mama, who has been making things with her hands since she was a wee babe. She has been able to channel her obsessive creativity and insatiable appetite for show and tell with the writing of her very popular craft blog, Angry Chicken, since 2005. After practicing commercial interior design in Seattle, Amy moved back home to Portland, Oregon in 2002. She and her husband now have three girls, and live in a lovely house that feels like it's nestled in the woods — but in fact is walking distance to a great doughnut shop. Amy works at home writing, sewing, cooking, and creating things alongside her children. Her first book, Bend-the-Rules Sewing: The Essential Guide to a Whole New Way to Sew, is in its fourth printing and her new title, Bend the Rules with Fabric: Fun Sewing Projects with Stencils, Stamps, Dye, Photo Transfers, Silk Screening, and More, is due out this August, 2009. I love the Oregon coast. We spend a lot of time there as a family, digging in the sand and enjoying the completely unpredictable weather. I also love all things nautical. Knots, rope, fish, anchors — whenever I see red, navy blue and white together, I get goosebumps. That's how much I love the crisp clean color combination! Add some preppy vintage sass or some distressed natural shells and I am totally happy. Etsy Finds: An Affair to Remember

I know I'm not the only one who has dreamed of her wedding since she was a wee one: what it would look like, where it would be, and don't even get me started on the dress. There are infinite settings in which to create a dream wedding, and pulling it off with panache doesn't have to be as difficult as everyone makes it sound (I for one have no plans for the word "bridezilla" in my future). Party Planners: Seaside Clambake with Food & Wine Magazine

As the style editor for Food & Wine, Jessica Romm gets to combine her twin passions for excellent food and amazing design. Every month she tracks the best in tabletop, choosing stunning plates, glasses and other serving pieces to showcase in the magazine. To start off a new series of Food & Wine summer party picks, she shares a few of her favorite nautical Etsy Finds for the perfect clambake.

The Art and Meditation of Drilling Sea Glass

ZZZZzz…….zzzzzZZZZZZZZZ...Zzz.......ZZZZZZZzzz….Z.

Oh, the sound of drilling sea glass. Do you hear it?

That's actually the sound of me tearing my hair out the first few times I tried to drill sea glass. Before I launch into this story, I must give you some background on how I came to this point in my life (of meditative drilling, I mean).

At work one day a few months ago, a colleague showed me a beautiful sea glass bracelet she had made for herself. I immediately fell in love with the frosty gems. Shortly thereafter, I had some kind of epiphany of wanting to start my own jewelry line, and GhostShip was immediately born.

I found my first piece of gem quality sea glass while walking the beach one morning with my dog, wearing my down parka and trudging in the sand in my winter ski boots. What a thrill it was to carry my precious ziplock bag of treasures home, to sort them by color and shape, and then to finally sit down and try drilling into these weathered, reclaimed beauties.

Of course, like all good and eager novice drillers, my drill speed was too high, I didn't use enough lubricant, I wore out many good tips very fast, and broke many precious pieces from pressing too hard. I finally got the hang of it, but thought to myself, "This is torture! WHEN is this going to be over so I can get on to the fun part of putting the jewelry design together?"

I would dread the times when I needed to drill a batch of glass for my designs that week — it was so tedious and boring. I wondered why any sane person would want to spend any amount of time hearing what, at the time, reminded me of sitting in the dentist's chair. That unforgettable, spine-rattling drill noise twanged on my nerves like a very out of tune violin. Fun stuff indeed.

It was at that time when my lovely and snuffly bulldog, Bodhi, reminded me of life's very important lesson. I needed to slow down and smell the roses (or in his case, eat the roses…as we had just come back from a very slow and long walk with many unscheduled stops to chomp on grass, flowers, tree bark…but I digress).

After thoroughly wiping down his wrinkly dog suit, I sat down for dreaded drilling session. But this time, it was different.

I picked up the piece of sea glass in front of me, and lovingly felt its frosty smooth surface, its cooling touch. As I started to bite into it, I felt the calming, massaging buzz of the drill in my hand. I noticed the milky white liquid well up from inside the drill hole. I dipped my drill tip and stone into the cool ice-cube filled cups I had placed in front of me and watched the milky dust swirl away in the water. I became aware of every movement, every detail of what I was doing, and soon fell into a trance of drilling, dipping, swishing. Drilling, dipping, swishing. My mind started to clear and before I knew it, I was lost in this meditative world.

Who knew it could be this relaxing? Was I losing my mind? Actually I was training my mind.

In Buddhism, it's all about training your mind to become free from the cycle of suffering so that you can be a more compassionate and loving person. It's all about letting go. I had to let go of the frustration and impatience I was feeling whenever I drilled. Needless to say, I also discovered new and helpful techniques during this "transition" period.

For instance, I always drilled from one side, and would jump out of my chair as the drill bit finally pierced the other side of the glass, scaring me out of my skin (and Bodhi's) every time! I'm telling you, it's very difficult to put a dog suit back on a bulldog…have you ever tried?

Well, I learned to drill a little from each end, flipping the stone over and over, and finally meeting in the middle for a very calm and, well, civilized breakthrough. Also, I went down at least a couple of speeds on my drill, realizing that having the drill go faster was not going to drill my hole any faster. In fact, it was just the opposite. I also didn’t get so much buildup and heat on my point, which made my diamond points last so much longer.

In the end, I realized that something I'd thought was a nuisance and a chore, actually turned out to be one of the most enjoyable, relaxing things to do in the whole process of making jewelry.

The middle path: Who would have guessed? After all, it's really mind over matter, eh?

How-Tuesday: Ahoy There! Pop-Up Pirate Card

Shiver me timbers! This card hails a pirate's "Hearty ahoy!" to a friend, captain, or best mate. With its pop-up frigate and jolly sailin' birdies, it's sure to evince a mirthful demeanor from the scurvy lad or merry lass who receives it. Download the complete project instructions here, or follow along below, courtesy of Handmade Hellos by Eunice Moyle and Sabrina Moyle.

You'll Need:
Glue stick
2 pieces of lined notebook or filler paper (trimmed to 9 x 6 1/4")
Card stock (trimmed to 9 x 6 1/4")
Ruler
Bone folder
Scissors
Two 8 1/2 x 11" sheets of tracing paper
Pencil, 2B or softer
Ballpoint pen
Brown card stock or construction paper (trimmed to 9 x 6 1/4")
Black pen
Two 4 x 4" scraps of red text-weight paper

Template:

How-To:

Line the card stock.
Using your glue stick, apply glue to the wrong side of your first sheet of lined notebook paper. Center your card stock on the lined paper, and smooth to adhere. Repeat with your second sheet of lined paper and the other side of your card stock. With a ruler and bone folder, score and fold the card in half, parallel to the short side of your card.

Make the waves.
Cut the wave shapes into a long side of one of the blue paper strips, either cutting freehand or using the template provided. If you'll be using the template, trace and transfer the wave to your blue paper and then trim it with scissors. Apply glue to the wrong side of the wave and adhere it to the front of your card, aligning the sides and bottom. Repeat with the second blue paper strip, pasting it to the back side of your card. Let it dry.

Make the boat.
Trace and transfer the boat template to your brown card stock. Cut out the boat, using a pair of scissors. With your black pen, draw a wood-grain effect all over the front of the boat. Draw an almond-shaped or circular center forming the knot, then draw contour lines 1/4" along the sides of the knot, echoing its shape and tapering to straight lines and either end, repeat the contour lines to form a striped wood grain pattern, adding additional knots as desired. Fold the boat in half, and then fold along the lines to create flaps, being sure both flaps fold away from you.

Draw a pirate sail.
Trace and transfer the Sail template (a pirate sail is also known as a Jolly Roger) to the upper half of your card. Color it in using black pen.

Paste the boat in place.
With the boat facing right side up, apply glue to its flaps. Fold back and paste these flaps in place (just below the sail), pressing down on them to adhere.

Add a couple of pirate-y birds.
Trace and transfer the Bird template to your red paper, twice. Cut out two bird shapes. Apply glue to the wrong side of each bird and paste them in place on the card. Using a black pen, add features such as an eye patch and a pirate's hat.

Add your greeting.
Fold your card, and write a pirate-y greeting on the front, such as Ahoy there!

Variations:
Avast, me hearties! Pirate lore and lingo are a fun starting point for a whole host of occasions. You may even consider giving this card to a friend on International Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19th)!
Best mate. Add the greeting You're my best mate! to let someone know you appreciate their friendship. Consider adding a cheery Aarrr! or Aye, me hearty! to the back of the card.
Pirate Party. Use this card as an invitation to a pirate-themed party, or make it for the host if you are invited to one.
Anchors away! Give a merry send-off to a friend or colleague who is embarking on a new adventure. Smooth sailin' an' fair winds t'ye!

Sea glass is such an inspiring material. Beach combers clean up debris and make shards into something new. Jewelry can be vibrant or mellow, soft or angular, depending on the piece of beach glass — and all these jewel-like nubbins conjure the sounds of the waves and the feeling of sand (hopefully not sharp glass) between the toes. This summer, we've noticed a lot of fantastic jewelry (and other items) made with beach glass — so here's a trend you can bring with you throughout the seasons.

Gotta Travel On: A Dog's Life in Greece

In the coming weeks, the Storque will be posting content about pets and animals. aegeansea offered the story of her Greek pooch DeeDee as a transition from the Gotta Travel On series to the Etsy Pets series. She included some of her surrealist pet collages too. Enjoy!

Born in a Greek village in the south of Greece, my dog DeeDee was gifted to me, and I moved her to northern Greece, where I now live. She now calls Panorama, near Thessaloniki, her winter home. She summers in Gerakini, our beach home located on the beautiful coastline of the Aegean Sea. DeeDee quickly adjusted to the northern lifestyle and became fluent in both Greek and English. Without a doubt, since she is a Griffon, I’m sure that her skills in French would be more than adequate, given a little exposure to it.

Living in a bi-cultural family, she is surrounded by English, my native language, and Greek, the language of her home-country and of my husband and sons. Like many bi-cultural offspring, she has the opportunity to live and travel in two countries, and the advantages of both. Recently, DeeDee had a great adventure visiting Texas. She had a blast hanging out with the cowboys and horses (got a little dusty!), sampling spicy bbq (licked her paws!) and, of course, doing country western dancing! Her new red kickers (boots) were the envy of every gal on the dance floor. The day we spent in Canton, Texas, the largest open-air trade and craft fair in the world, was a highlight. More handcrafts and artwork than one could ever hope for, in one location. We had our share of lemonade and sausage links that day.

Home in Greece, DeeDee is happy to be back in the "cradle" of civilization, and the "spring from which creativity sprung." Since ancient times until today, Greeks have continued to create some of the world's most beautiful pottery, paintings, jewelry, woven fabrics, needlework, architecture, and the list goes on. Creativity knows no borders or language barriers. Any world traveler knows hand-crafted artworks are as important as history, scenery and cuisine. Even without a common language, we can understand the wonders of a culture through its distinctive ethnic creations.

When you visit Greece, a world filled with antiquities, art, farmlands, mountains and Aegean Blue seas and sky, take every opportunity to see as much as you can. Visit the markets, the villages and the gift boutiques, where DeeDee promises you will find the greatest of Greek Treasures, the handcrafted works and arts of this richly creative land. You never know where you'll bump into DeeDee. She's known to frequent the little shops with homemade marmalades and sweets. Each is a work of art. Or, maybe you’ll see her on the beach.

Don’t forget your sunscreen and sun glasses. You’ll need them in sunny Greece. In the evening when it cools down, be sure to take a stroll and you’ll find the perfect handcrafted souvenir to remind you always of this beautiful country. The nights in Greece are indescribable! Stop by at one of the tavernas (local restaurants) and enjoy a delicious Greek salad with grilled fish or meat and a glass of your favorite wine, ouzo or lemonade.

As for me, aegeansea, I was born in the USA, near the Gulf Coast of Texas. I have always loved the sand, surf and sun. After marrying my Greek husband, we moved to the Aegean Coast of Greece. It wasn't long before I realized my new homeland was a natural delight for my spirit. Watching my energetic doggy run along the shoreline, I chased her and picked up as many seashells as I could along the way. I could say DeeDee inspired me to begin my Aegean Sea coastal creations that opened the door for my Etsy shop. She is my greatest encourager and sits beside me as I design and create. Coastal shell chimes are her favorites, but we’re both excited about the doggy scrapbooks and collages. The possibilities abound when surrounded by such a wealth of inspiration.

Etsy in the Press: Alchemy Lives & Other Headlines

It's been about one week since the rebirth of Alchemy, and already the press is begining to take notice. New York Magazine's Best Bets section notes the resurgence of the feature, dubbing it "genius." The irreverent crowd over at Gawker took notice as well, noting requests for a vegan jackalope and ten felted eyeballs. Check out the comments section for other hilarious suggestions. Rounding out this trio is a posting on buzzfeed in the Tech Buzz section.

In other news, triplepundit has an interesting piece about the social values associated with Etsy, and The Daytona Beach News-Journal wrote a story as well, featuring quotes from three local sellers. The New York Daily News also mentioned Etsy in a lineup of great online shopping venues.

Etsy Engineers: Get back to Work!
