East Nashville artist Agnes Barton-Sabo aka Betty Turbo is all about cupcakes and moustaches! Agnes grew up in Alaska with an artistic family. Mom was an incredible seamstress who made matching outfits for Agnes and her dolls. Dad was an art history professor fascinated with animal spirits and great grandma was an interior designer in the 30's. Agnes took inspiration from her family and went on to college for photography.

After school she moved to East Nashville for a letterpress job at Hatch Show Print shop. Letterpress became a way for Agnes to combine her interests in photography, vintage advertising, beards and cupcakes!

The Etsy Design Face-Off Part Deux: The Votes Have Been Tallied

We received some amazing Etsy logo designs as part of the Etsy Design Face-Off. The Etsy Community voted and the ballots have been run through our special vote tallying machine.

The Etsy Labs has printed a limited edition run of t-shirts with her design, which are now available in the EtsyLabs shop. The community also expressed so much interest in the designs of BettyTurbo and HeidiBurton that we decided to print their designs on Etsy Merch as well.

The Etsy Design Face-Off: Part Deux

The Etsy Labs has noticed your requests for a more diverse style of promo merchandise and have created the Etsy Design Face-Off with the intention to involve you, our beloved Etsy community, in the design process of our new line of Etsy goodies.

The Etsy Admin have hand-selected three designers that are already doing an awesome job on the site. We asked them to create up to three new Etsy branded designs, and now it's up to you to decide whose Etsy Design will reign supreme! Just cast your vote for your favorite new Etsy Logo Design in the comments below.

The voting will be open until Sunday, March 23, and the design selected by the community's vote will be screenprinted at the Labs and featured in an exclusive limited edition run of merchandise for sale in the official Etsy merch shop.

This month's competitors are strong, established designers with a large bag of skills. With all artists weighing in at over 50 sales each, this match up is going to be a very exciting race!

On the Purple & Green platform we have angeldamico, hailing from Chicago, Illinois. She has been a member of Etsy since June of 2006 and has already sold over 317 items!

On the Green & Gold platform we have bettyturbo, hailing from Nashville, Tennessee. She has been a member of Etsy since November of 2006 and has already sold over 57 items!

On the Pink & Blue platform we have heidiburton, hailing from Cambridge, UK. She has been a member of Etsy since July of 2007 and has already sold over 86 items!

The Handmade Tourist: Hatch Show Print

I admit I’m drawn to places that give me the feeling of stepping back in time. When I crossed the threshold of Hatch Show Print I felt that nostalgia, with the creak of the wooden floor and the smell of old paper. I was a bit thrown when the manager barked at me, “How can we help you, Tourist?”

“Oh, I’m just looking.”

I am a tourist seeking out old, handmade things. Hatch Show Print self-describes as “indeed ‘a tonic for the information age.’" But Hatch Show Print is not a museum or quiet place where you are supposed to look and not touch. It’s alive and grinding away with huge letterpresses and sloppy ink. It’s one of America’s oldest letterpress shops and its history is evident in the floor to ceiling wooden cases of type.

“So, what are you doing here, Tourist?”

“Actually I’m here to see if I can take some photos for Etsy’s blog.” Jim Sherraden, the manager, Brad Vetter, the designer, and a couple of the other folks there had heard of Etsy (in fact, two of the women who work at Hatch Show Print are Etsy sellers—BettyTurbo.etsy.com and SnowOwl.etsy.com). And so my status ratcheted up one notch from Tourist to Serendipitous-Web-Personality. I was invited to walk behind the counter though one of those wooden, waist-high swinging doors and treated to an explanation of how to set type and hold it in place with filler pieces called “furniture.” I’m sure they would have done the same for any enthusiastic tourist who appreciated the art of letterpress. They just like to call a spade a spade and acknowledge the fact that handmadeness is, for most people, something to gawk at.

Hatch Show Print is basically one large L-shaped room with the bulkier letterpress machines in the back. Posters, largely two color concert posters for the local Nashville country music scene, line the walls—wherever there aren’t cases of type. For old time country music fans, it’s fun to pick out the greats, such as Elvis here, and take notes on the lesser known. You can purchase prints in the front, and if you’re in need, you can hire them to do small-run jobs.

A related note:
I went to see some live local music in Nashville at the Station Inn. The members of the band Radiola not only play like crazy but many of the band members are luthiers too. The band leader and his singer wife called her sister out from the kitchen to sing a duet and the whole place felt like family and friends.
