Trends: Charmed, I'm Sure

I have a jewelry fetish and nervous hands. Thus I've found that my all time favorite bracelets have something in common: they are fun to play with — moving parts, nice jingle-jangle, little fascinating pieces. It's jewelry that keeps you from nail biting or smoking, to boot. Happily, this also coincides with the current trend (or resurgence of the 1950s trend by way of Queen Victoria) in charm bracelets.

Lucky Magazine's blog recently gave a nice nod to makepienotwar, who often uses charms in her designs.

I also have a bit of a nostalgic streak; relics and souvenirs pay homage to memories, help me remember the places I've been, or oftentimes, places I'd like to visit. Check out this beautiful vintage piece from MorningGlorious ($38). How about a jaunt to the Acropolis and island hopping in the Aegean this summer?

Etsy Finds: Bangles

Bangles are a wardrobe essential to me. I feel nervously under-dressed if I leave the house with empty wrists. When shopping, I find them totally irresistible, and have amassed an enormous collection of chunky plastic bangles, demure little metal bangles, bright enamel bangles, charming vintage bangles and baby-teethed wooden bangles, all scattered around my house and piled on top of dressing tables and lost behind couches where the cats have batted them. I have bangles for dressing up and dressing down and all points in the middle. And naturally, I have a lot of favorite sellers on Etsy. Here's my current must-have list:

Process: Sustainable Wooden Jewelry by PrasseinDesignStudio

Process is a new Etsy video series that features the intimate relationship formed between Etsy sellers and the handmade items that they create and make available to the world through their online shops. Process is not to be confused with a How-To video, as each video is intended to show each seller's unique artistic voice through the process by which their items come to be.

Seattle native Shawn Taylor of prasseindesignstudio is sharing her process of making a wooden wrist cuff with us in conjunction with our themes of woodworking and jewelry making.

As a designer, Shawn works with architects designing spaces, and she applies her knowledge of certified wood and recycled materials in a way that makes her designs both safe for habitation and easy on the environment. Shawn is very passionate about sustainability and has partnered with ecohaus, a sustainable urban building supply company based in the Northwest.

While ecohaus attempts to reuse all of their materials in one way or another, the shipping crates that carry their bulk materials often break in the warehouse and then have to be chipped up to be effectively reused in other building materials. Through her relationship with this building supplier, Shawn has inserted herself into that ecosystem to prevent some of the more exotic woods from being destroyed by upcycling scraps into stunning yet minimal wooden accessories.

Shawn was kind enough to take me to the ecohaus branch in south Seattle, where we met Elliott Kopet, her friend and knowledgeable sales associate who led us through the warehouse, sharing various places for Shawn to scavenge for reusable scraps of wood. Shawn's passion for wood was instantly revealed by her ability to accurately identify a variety of different woods all with varying degrees of weather damage. After gleaning what she could from the scrap pile, we continued to Shawn's home wood shop in north Seattle where she transformed a piece of scrap lumber into a magnificent wrist cuff. The piece, Nature's Barcode no. 1, highlights the sustainably farmed certification stamp that was burned into the wood itself, sharing the story of its origins. As stated in her shop announcements, 25% of Shawn's sales from the Natures Barcode series will be donated to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Jewelry How-to: Naughty Secretary Club Bracelet

(how do you do it?) Ah, we joke, we joke. Take heart, it's Friday! ...And the Naughty Secretary herself, Ms. Jennifer Perkins, has a special treat — a free project download! Plus lots of other ideas for all of those office supplies you "borrowed" in her new book, The Naughty Secretary Club: The Working Girls Guide to Handmade Jewelry. Now get to work and make yourself this sweet bracelet!

Office Hanky-Panky Bracelet

(Download complete instructions here.)

Stuff You'll Need:
1 hanky or other thin vintage fabric scraps; 3 vintage clip-on earrings; silver bracelet blank; button-covering kit; chain-nose pliers; wire cutters; scissors; Liquid Fusion Glue

STEP 1: Gather your materials
Choose a hanky or thin piece of material with an office theme. Gather your stray clip earrings, bracelet blank, glue, scissors and button covering kit. Make sure that the size of the kit you choose corresponds with the size of the blank on your bracelet.

STEP 2: Cover the Button

Using the circle template provided in the button-covering kit, cut out a circle from your hanky, making sure the part of the image you want to show is in the center of the circle. Hold the fabric circle right side down and center the top half of the button on top of it.

STEP 3: Arrange Covered Button Inside Cup

Insert the fabric with the top half of the button on top into the larger plastic cup. Fold all of the extra fabric edges on top of the button. Push the back of the button into the plastic cup, making sure all of the fabric edges are tucked under it.

STEP 4: Secure Button Back

Use the blue cap provided in the kit to push the button back down into the plastic cup, securing the fabric under the button back. Simply pop the covered button out of the plastic cup.

STEP 5: Remove Button Shank

Use chain-nosed pliers to remove the shank from the back of the covered button.

STEP 6: Remove Backs from Clip-on Earrings

Use chain-nosed pliers and wire cutters to remove the backs of the vintage clip-on earrings. Occasionally a Dremel tool with a sanding attachment will be needed to smooth rough edges for a better gluing surface.

STEP 7: Adhere Covered Buttons and Earrings to Bracelet

Use your favorite glue to attach alternating earrings and covered buttons to your bracelet. Let everything dry overnight and wear to work!

Then I went looking to see what Etsy had to offer, but actually got sidetracked by the chain maille artists and all the metalsmiths hand-forging their own chain jewelry. Etsy Finds: Bug Bracelets

Hi, my name is Amber, aka adubois, and I am happy to say that I am a new member of the Support Team at Etsy! The new members of Support were each asked to pick an item on Etsy that we think is pretty darn cool. Since I'm a bit of a jewelry enthusiast, I've decided to feature this beautiful lucite bangle by KolosStudio.
