At the risk of sounding like all I do is watch television (I don't even have a television, mind you. Thanks a lot, Internet!), I've got to say that no show is capable of systematically making me laugh until I cry like The Office can. There's just something about the painfully awkward, at times inappropriate, and yet charmingly earnest humor that gets me every time.

Off with the Lights! Turn 'Em Out for Earth Hour!

Ok, friends, it's officially time to conquer your fear of the dark. And to take action against global warming (the thing that we should be really scared of). Join in with eco-minded neighbors and shut off your lights for one hour. People — individuals the world over, the World Wildlife Fund, whole towns even — will be switching off their lights for at least one hour this Saturday, March 28th, 2009 at 8:30pm (your local time).

It's an international show of hands. By "registering to vote for the earth" on Earth Hour's website, you will be counted as a light switcher-offer. Etsy.com has voted. The goal is to reach 1 billion "votes" to be presented at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009, where world leaders will be meeting about next steps post-Kyoto Protocol. According to their website, "Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour."

And for all you crafters out there, this brings the boast of being able to make your items with your eyes closed to a whole new level. Who is bluffing and who can really knit in the dark?

Redefine Your Style Showcase goes on sale Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 12PM EST. (Click here to translate this time on a world clock.)

Go to the Showcase Gateway to purchase a spot.
This Showcase will run from Monday, February 23, 2009 12am EST through Sunday, March 1, 2009, 11:59pm EST.

Lolo is the creator of VeganYumYum.com, and she's been a member of Etsy since 2005. She loves all things handmade, so Etsy is a very dangerous website for her to visit. Despite great peril on her part, she's collected some of her favorite things to share with you. On her blog she only focuses on handmade food, so she's excited to break out and feature some original, hand-crafted goods that will not only fill your life with a little bit more sunshine, but also support artists who make a living using their hands.

Sometimes I spend so much time thinking about the food I'm going to put on the table for the holidays, I forget about decoration. (You know, the non-edible stuff.) I usually end up running around my house grabbing things I can pass off for holiday flair, which always ends up being the votives I made for my wedding two and a half years ago. I dust them off as best as I can, hoping no one will notice, but since the people I have over are usually people who went to my wedding, I often hear, "Oh, I remember those candles!" With that in mind, here are some pretty handmade things we can use to, uh, update our tables.

There are other things I've included in here that I love, but don't necessarily have to do with the holidays, or your table. I hope you like them anyway! I certainly do.

Botanicraft finds natural things (leaves, flowers, branches, seeds) and makes the most gorgeous pottery out of them. These tube vases would be a perfect fall or winter or [insert favorite season] table decoration. Check out her entire inventory, there's even a pretty brown vase in there for only $6!

I'm a sucker for cutting boards: they're just so gosh darn useful. You can cut on them, use them as a hot plate, and if you find a pretty one, they look great on the table for serving as well. I feature cutting boards in about 99% of the photos on my website for these very reasons (also because I'm lazy). TheWoodenKnot has a range of gorgeous cutting boards made from the most beautifully colored woods you can imagine. No one will think you are lazy because they will be distracted by your beautiful cutting board.

If you're like me and love unique, multi-purpose, (pretty!) cooking tools, check out Khphillips' queso pot. This is the ultimate low-tech appliance for one-pot cooking. Ingredients go in, shove it in the oven, serve from it, then stick the custom lid on and put the leftovers in the fridge. (Of course I'd use it for everything but queso.) I want to eat every single one of my fall and winter meals out of this pot. Check out the rest of his pottery, too!

I'm a huge fan of salt pigs. (Yes, that's really what they're called.) I have a good idea of how much salt I'm using (when cooking or at the table) when I can feel it in between my finger tips. Using a salt shaker just doesn't do it for me. If you have a salt pig, your salt is always within reach, but protected from dust and...well, let's be honest: cat hair. Check out Risingsky's shop for different colors, and other fun items like garlic keepers and olive boats.

It's always good to have candles on hand. Worthysoycandle's shop is full of them, and she even let's you pick out your own custom fragrances, colors, as containers. And they're all vegan-friendly soy! You can't really beat that for $6.

These aren't for your table, but I just have to mention them: reusable bulk food bags. Is that a great idea or what? I bought these earlier this year and they're FANTASTIC. They're light, strong, and washable. They don't weigh any more than the normal plastic bags, and they're slightly transparent so you can see what's in them. Take a look at Kootsac's shop to get the colors and sizes that work for you. I liked them so much I went back and bought more.

I just had to feature these pretty coasters by Knight27, because the photos were taken right in my neighborhood! They're totally lovely, and since they're just trees, you can pretend they're from your neighborhood, too. (And you'll be all matchy-matchy if you get the vases above, too. Just saying.)

I'm always on the lookout for interesting dishes. (I have a little bit of an obsession.) These mini bowls are totally beautiful, modern, and fun, and also made by a local Bostonian. There's even a nice, affordable appetizer plate in JillRosenwald's store for $24. If I was going to invest in some gorgeous, handmade pottery, I'd start my search here.

I love recycled and unique things that are also useful, everyday items. Hammeronsteel's shop has some very charming church keys made from scrap metal. One of the bottle openers in his shop used to be part of an old cider press...How awesome is that? Much cooler than the one I have from Target. Sigh.

There is so much handmade vegan soap on etsy! If you search for vegan soap, you get 310 pages, and there is definitely something in there you will like. Personally, I love the idea of this kitchen soap from spottedcowsoaps that's designed to get rid of everything from garden dirt to onion and garlic smells. Fresh brewed coffee? Yes, please. You can make garlic soup and smell like a latte afterwords. WIN.

Oh man, the area in my kitchen devoted to spices is out of control. There are jars everywhere, falling over, rolling around, and the cinnamon is always hiding behind the mustard seeds, and I can't find either of them. If this sounds like your kitchen, go look at Purposedesign's store and get yourself organized. Spices included!

And finally, never forget to say thanks. I love letterpress, and Littlepretty's shop is full of original, beautiful, letterpress cards such as this one. Full disclosure: LP is a buddy of mine, but I really do love her cards. I bought the monster cards and the owl cards earlier this year. A couple months ago my husband and I got carried away playing Rockband way too loud, and way too late. Our poor new neighbors had to ask us to quiet down so they could get some sleep. The next day I gave them one of LP's owl cards with an apology, and they invited us over to a vegan dinner that same week. Her cards are so pretty, they'll make up for any social blunder! They might even get you a free vegan dinner!

Etsy World Tour: Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Oaxaca, Mexico

Last year I checked another experience off of my immense to-do list: I rallied three girlfriends to accompany me to Mexico to observe one of my long term obsessions, the Día de los Muertos holiday.

After a few days in Mexico City meeting friends, swooning over Frida Kahlo's blue house and Diego Rivera's murals at the Palacio Nacional, and yes, drinking tequila (poured by the gregarious Gerardo at Hostel Amigo), we boarded a bus to the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.

Land of a thousand moles, chapulines (fried grasshoppers — sorry Mr. Bourdain, I totally chickened out!) and the most amazing cheese in the world, Oaxaca is also know for its many artisans and craftspeople. Indigenous traditional crafts are displayed in the marketplace alongside works by classically trained fine artists. Oaxaca was a pleasant respite from the bustling New York-esque Districto Federale, despite being torn apart by violent political conflicts only a year before.

I was slightly bummed to be missing my favorite holiday back home — Halloween — but my disappointment soon lifted once I saw the parade of children through the zócalo, or public square. Tiny red devils, little skeletons, and miniature brides with black circles painted around their eyes proudly marched past with not a prefab Disney character getup in sight. Every inch of the zócalo was festooned with blazing orange marigolds, paper-mâché skeletons, and intricate spreads of edibles not meant for consumption by the living.

That night we visited the cemetery Xoxocotlan (Xoxo for short) just outside of the city limits. Around midnight, we entered the grounds, illuminated by the candles on each grave and the amber light from the generator-powered floodlights. The wind, gently but noticeably blowing through the graveyard, rustled the colorful papel picado flags strung between the tombstones.

Families and friends crowded around the graves of their deceased loved ones. Men passed plastic cups of mezcal, while others strummed guitars and sang. The theme song of a certain bilingual young female explorer blared from a pink boom box atop the grave of a young girl. Despite the potentially depressing context, the mood was not purely solemn; the graveside atmosphere was a mixture of fiesta and reflection.

Comedy was not unheard of. Skeleton sculptures known as calacas depicted an exotic dancer on a pole, luchadores, a cuckolded husband, and a drunkard chased by a skeletal hound. At one point, a sharp gust blew through the cemetery at the exact moment that the floodlights suddenly switched off. Departed spirits returning to join the party held in their honor? Everyone in attendance either jumped or laughed, then resumed the festivities.

Eventually, we retreated through the cemetery gates to cups of thick hot chocolate and a taxi back to the hostel. Turning to look back at the devoted relatives of the sleeping souls, holding their chilly but cheerful vigil until morning, I wondered why we Americans don't make a point to visit more often with our late ancestors. Why is death a feared and somber occasion and not a joyous one, a celebration of life and moments cherished with family and friends over a nice plate of grasshoppers?

Hi everyone! I'm Ez (Ee-Zee). I'm an adjective lover, have been known to pronounce Etsy as Eat-See, and am super excited to have the chance to share some of my favorite finds with you today.

I'm a huge fan of indie and handcrafted goods, and am an Etsy shop owner myself. (Check me out at wrenandchickadee!) To me, there is something so unique and irreplaceable about handmade products. So much of a designer's heart goes into creating her unique work, and it's truly wonderful to hold something in your hands or display something in your home that has such a direct connection to its creator. This is part of the reason why I make a point of featuring independent artists on my blog Creature Comforts as often as I can... that and indie is where it's at!

I don't have plans to get married anytime soon, but if that day should ever come I will be permanently affixing one of kateszabone's stunning creations onto my finger. I love her work!

A while back I purchased one of these wonderful little mini tag books from erinzam, so I can tell you from experience that they are even lovelier in person and so well made. I use mine for sketches of the things I'm thankful for and it's perfect.

Half of the reason I rarely write "thank you" cards is because there never seems to be a card perfect enough to send. Well, palomasnest has solved my problem with her fabulous thank you wood stationery cards. I better get writing.

I've been obsessed with cowls lately but sometimes they can look a little bit dated. The keo chubby by Joodito has not even one ounce of old lady fashion in it and is absolutely fab to the max!

I love the trend we've been seeing of unique motivational prints. The we are in this together print by lorenasiminovich is one of my favorites. So simple and wonderful.

Another artist I'm extremely fond of is Caitlin Shearer of pepperminte. Her little knickers piece is displayed in my home along with several other works of hers. I just can't get enough of this girl's talent!

It's hard to pick a calendar these days because there are just so many good ones to choose from. This birdie II calendar by smeurer8 made it on to my must have list because I can't resist the bird motif, and its petite size and lovely wood backing make it truly unique!

The tiny golden honeyed dots necklace by eRosasjewelry is another Etsy purchase that I have been absolutely thrilled with. I find myself picking out outfits around this little beauty, so that I can wear it as often as possible.

I love the French cottage feel of this beautiful doily pillow by SparklePower. It's delicate in appearance, but not overly done, so this would look fabulous on a bed or couch!

Every woman needs a good black bag, and the belle tote by christystudio should be it. The price is phenomenal and the style is perfection! I love it!

Yes, I'm a sucker when it comes to little forest creatures. I'd love to pin this little yellow fawn pin by theilluminatedowl to my bag or fall coat for a touch of color and sweetness to brighten any dreary day.

All you have to do is read the scrumptious list of scents that you can choose from with these soy candles by blisscandles and you'll be hooked just like I am. Vanilla hazelnut mocha anyone?!

This Fall, I will be entering my senior year at Stanford, and that means I have one last chance to do a dorm room right. The primary obstacles in decorating a dorm room are:

1. It is an empty, depressing, white box, for which you usually have only a few days to decorate before problem sets and Alexander Pope papers begin.
2. Everyone else owns that futon from Ikea as well.

There are so few mirrors in college dorm rooms, yet so much vanity. This Hand-Carved Cherry Mirror by elleny will do the trick — and avoid the messy wall removal typical of most mirrors.

There are plenty of vintage skeleton keys like these from theginghamgirl, and I think they would make for an awesome craft project — perhaps string a whole bunch to hang across a wall instead of those cheap Christmas lights everyone loves so much.

I love these velvet sachets that smell like pine from Inkandescence. They would add such a richness to an otherwise flat space.

The glaringly empty walls of a dorm room are begging to be covered. I'd pick this beautiful polaroid emulsion lift by TiffanyTeske, rather than the Animal House poster that has managed to build a monopoly on college wall art.

Wall decals are the college student's best friend. I love this end table decal by BadassCustomDecals for the illusion of furniture in a tight space.

Part of the problem with the dorm room is that it not only is a temporary space, but it continues to look like one, even when inhabited. I want to fill my space with history and tchochkes, in an effort to beat back the soulless modernity of the room. This Six Legged Lamb by melabo is perfectly cute and creepy.

I think this antique medicine bottle from shunklies would make for a great crayon holder. If only I could replace the windows with this aged glass as well.

I may not be allowed to light candles in my dorm room, but this crystal candelabra from sheriscrystals would still bring the drama when I gather my friends together to discuss Oscar Wilde or Facebook.

Mary Helt and Chris Sittel of maryink met at a party while visiting their families in Nashville. At the time, Mary was living in New York City working as a photographer's stylist and Chris was working in Florida at a silk-screen studio. They started visiting one another, having t-shirt parties and coming up with new project ideas.

After a few years of living apart, they finally moved to the Virgin Islands to start their original silk-screen design company, maryink. While Mary is the designer behind maryink, Chris functions as the steady hand behind the printing process. Mary's designs have a 1970s Scandinavian and folk art influence, and she also incorporates elements of embroidery, weaving and bitossi pottery. The shop is known for its interesting designs, silk screened votive candles, jewelry, tote bags and t-shirts.

Even though living in the Virgin Islands was paradise, running a business proved difficult. Chris and Mary soon packed up and headed back to Nashville, where the low cost of living allowed them to dedicate themselves full-time to maryink.

Etsy Finds: Birthdays and Candles

Birthday season is upon us here at Etsy.* If you know a lot of summer babies like me, you're going to need good little gifts for co-workers, friends, and even yourself. Since candles (along with bath stuff) seem to be the ultimate gift for women — from those you don't know that well to your BFF, may I suggest the humble tea light?

My problem with candles in the past is that I've been "afraid" to use them — like I'm wasting them. The beauty of tea lights is that if your gift recipient happens to be similarly afflicted and receives a huge pile of tea lights along with her holder, she'll feel a sense of abundance that frees her to let 'em burn!

I've recently discovered soy candles, which burn much longer than whatever the other kind are made out of, don't smoke, and even the unscented ones have a nice, warm, natural smell. Go ahead and get a pack of, like, 100 so there's plenty for you and your gift recipients. I've noticed that some candle makers are offering clear plastic holders, which I think is lovely!

Handmade Weddings: An Inspired Affair with StyleMePretty

Abby of Style Me Pretty is one of those designers-at-heart who gleans inspiration from everything around her. Who better to get us rolling with the Handmade Wedding Series? Abby started in the wedding industry when she launched her line of engraved wedding invitations called Abby Jean. She says, "Although I did find success with my company, more importantly, I fell in love with weddings over and over again," and even after selling her company last year, she wanted to stay immersed in the wedding industry. And so she launched her blog, Style Me Pretty, and fashioned her very own dream job. She's got a talent for pulling together elements in "Inspiration Boards" and making everything convey a complete, compelling look.

Whether you have buckets of cash to throw around or are working on a teeny tiny budget, the most beautiful and memorable weddings are those that are truly inspired. Those infused with handmade touches, with lovely but oh-so-imperfect details, with chic and yet approachable décor.

And yes, as cliché as it might sound, wedding inspiration is all around you. From that beat up Victorian sofa in your grandmother’s house to that gleaming new diamond gracing your left hand. Inspiration is in the crown molding of your new home, the great clutch that you found right here on Etsy, the perfect letterpressed invitation. Inspiration is found in what you love. What you crave. What you consider beautiful.

With that said, when it comes to your wedding, it is often incredibly difficult to hone your many loves — your many inspirations — into one cohesive look. That is where the inspiration board comes in. Creating an inspiration board is the easiest way to design a wedding style that is natural and consistant, in color and in style. Using fabric swatches and magazine tear-outs, you can easily create a physical inspiration board. E-boards (a Photoshop version of the inspiration board) are just as simple, plus you have a ton of gorgeous images from sites like Etsy and Style Me Pretty to help inspire you and to focus your vision. A completed inspiration board is such an invaluable tool in the wedding planning process, as it will really articulate your unique vision to all of your vendors. They are a great way to ensure that everyone working with you is on the same page.

For me, an inspiration board begins simply, with one inspiring image. Once you’ve found that one element to inspire, you are ready to start envisioning your picture perfect (or imperfect, if you prefer) wedding style. Take for example this charcoal grey table runner that I found in yorktownroad’s lovely shop. To me, the texture and the color are perfectly paired with the softness of simple white tulips and a bright, cheerful accent color like yellow….

I used Etsy’s Color tool to find canary hued inspirations, starting with those amazing yellow and white coasters featured in 12Fifteen’s oh-so-chic shop, perfect for adding a pop of color to your cocktail area. On the cocktail tables, yellow yarn could be used to fully wrap various sized tin cans filled with white tulips, for a splash of color and an unexpected touch that your guests will appreciate. The great ceramic yellow bowl filled with floating candles and cabbage rose buds would make perfect centerpieces. You could also forgo a traditional guestbook, having guests instead write well wishes on cute letterpressed note cards, then drop them into a large tin bucket.

By using Etsy’s Color tool, I was able to really play with color palettes and see how various shades could inspire completely different wedding styles. Swapping out the yellow with an avocado green gave way to an earthy, elegant look that would be perfect for a late Summer or early Fall wedding…

This particular palette was inspired by that incredible silk ribbon that I found in JamnGlass' shop. The color was so rich and when I pulled a white in, the palette just made sense. The ribbon could be used to tie around white linen napkins for a lovely table setting. The tiny ceramic bowls that I discovered in jdwolfPottery's shop (an amazing find, by the way) would be lovely with tiny tea lights inside, scattered around your tables. Bridesmaids would look gorgeous is charcoal dresses, carrying white tulips and the incredibly chic green bag featured in YorktownRoad’s shop.

Once you’ve found that one great inspiration piece, play around with various colors until you build a palette. If whites and neutrals inspire you, think in layers. Layer great textures, pretty neutral hues and interesting fabrics and you will create a depth and dimension to your palette that guests will love. A “white on white” wedding can be stunning when you include great handmade pieces that add charm and personality all on their own…
