Happy Halloween! Sometimes I look back at the ways my brother and I used to behave and I begin to understand why my mother was such an unmerciful tease. Come Halloween, she would suddenly morph into a zombie named Melodie at the most random moments (usually when we were on our worst behavior). With a blank look on her face, she would creep toward us chanting "Melodieeee" in a dark, evil voice. You'd think my brother and I would have been scarred for life, but instead, we filed away every tip and trick to pull off the most mischievous pranks.

The Collectors: Boopsie Daisy's Pez Dispensers with Rikrak

I just love seeing what folks are collecting. I guess I feel it tells us just a little bit about what inspires them, what they love, and what they choose to surround themselves with in their homes. Today I'm delighted to present the next installment in an ongoing series here on The Storque: The Collectors. First presented on my own little blog, the rikrak studio, it's 11 and a half quick questions with a wonderful artist on what they're collecting (apart from their art supplies!).

Oh October! How I love you! And I just adore this month’s featured collection, too! Like Halloween, BoopsieDaisy’s Pez dispensers showcase an appreciation of nostalgia, a love of whimsy, a panache for color, and a celebration of…candy! Delightful! So join me as we skip hand-in-hand down Gumdrop Lane and revel in the sugar-covered sweet sweet joy of collecting!

Who (are you?): Missy Munday of Boopsiedaisy

What (are you collecting?): Pez Dispensers

When (did you start?): Seven years ago

How (many do you have?): 209 at last count

Where (do you find them) and (do you keep them?): Yard sales, thrift stores, flea markets & souvenir shops. I keep them in our dining room.

What (piece would you like to add?): The two that top my wish list are Snow White and Frankenstein, the original 60's versions.

Why (do you love them?): Besides that they double as delicious, colorful wall candy, they're instantly recognizable as collectible, totally timeless, and seem to beckon back to a time that was simpler.
Plus they spoonfeed you candy.

Which (one is your favorite?): It's sort of a three-way toss-up between Gargamel (for looks), the vintage clown (my rarest) and the vintage witch (which has sentimental value).

What (else do you collect): Too much to list, really, but primarily different editions of Snow White and Alice in Wonderland books, dolls, Wizard of Oz merch, Muppets stuff, vintage valentines and squeak toys, and anything relating to Drew Barrymore.

Like her delicious and fun-filled collection, Missy’s brilliant shop is genuine eye candy for the soul. Just a moment savoring her sweet and sugar-coated, tantalizing and gasp-worthy, rainbow-sprinkled handmade world, promises to banish the grayest day and delight your senses!

Her enchanting and whimsical creations have captured the wide-eyed imagination of many, and it’s with holding-my-breath delight that I tune in on a daily basis to see what fantastical new fairy tales she’s crafted in her vivid life and work. What a joy!

Guest Curator: Share Some Candy

Share Some Candy, run by Reuben and Yael Miller, is a unique blog that features the work of artists, makers and designers. Reuben and Yael are big on supporting artists and creative folk by inviting artists to put up their own work with a team of dedicated "curators" who find the best "eye candy" to share. The blog is basically a running visual commentary that's all pictures and no words (save for the artist/maker's name and a little "via" link to the source). Needless to say, they make perfect Guest Curators.

Both Yael and I were once-upon-a-time Etsy makers ourselves, but got more into supporting other talents in the last couple years through blogging on Share Some Candy, the dieline and reubenmiller. We believe that handmade work that's also smart, well-designed and beautifully photographed is a testament to the maker who respects his/her craft. This puts these folk on par with the best out there.

We've been discovering and featuring great-looking handmade work from Etsy artists over the last few years. We're really excited to share our top favorites that score high on concept, design, execution and presentation. You guys are an inspiration to the creative soul in all of us!

You be the Judge: Chocolate Kisses

I'm sitting in my Etsyified office on a beautiful spring afternoon eating some delicious Hershey's Kisses and researching a newsworthy and entertaining pending issue for the Etsy community to judge. I'm in heaven!

I unwrap the silver foil from the bite-sized tear-drop chocolate morsel and pop it into my mouth. Although this treat is delicious, I do sometimes prefer the more expensive Jacque Torres chocolates made just a few blocks away in Brooklyn.

Hershey’s is one of the largest chocolate manufacturers in North America. In 1907, Hershey's introduced its small flat-bottomed conical-shaped pieces of chocolate named “Hershey’s Kisses.” Hershey Chocolate & Confectionary Corporation, a subsidiary of The Hershey Company, owns the U.S. federal trademark registration for the mark “Kisses.”

Brooklyn-based Jacques Torres Chocolate specializes in fresh, hand-crafted chocolates. Jacques Torres sells “Champagne Kiss” truffles, which contain Taittinger Rose Champagne, and cost around $1.50 each.

Recently, Hershey’s attorneys sent Mr. Torres a letter stating “Hershey is concerned that Jacques Torres Chocolate’s use of the mark KISS or KISSES may cause consumer confusion with Hershey as to the source, sponsorship, or affiliate of Jacque Torres Chocolate’s product.” The letter went on to demand that Mr. Torres immediately discontinue the use of the mark KISS or KISSES in connection with its chocolate candies.

A lawyer for Torres replied and offered a number of examples to substantiate their claim that any concern of “consumer confusion” is without merit. According to Torres’s lawyer, Jacque Torres chocolates are “high end” and are not marketed like Hershey’s products as the first ingredient in Torres’ Kisses is champagne. Also the shape of the chocolates is flat and unlike a Hershey’s Kiss.

According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, a trademark protects "words, names, symbols, sounds, or colors that distinguish goods and services from those manufactured or sold by others and to indicate the source of the goods." To find a likelihood of confusion, the parties will examine 1) the similarity of the marks; and 2) the commercial relationship between the goods and/or services listed in the application.

This potential lawsuit is very near and dear to my heart because I am a fan of both types of chocolate. Do you think that Hershey’s has a point? Is there a likelihood of confusion? In the case of the Kisses, You Be the Judge and post in the comments below!

Each craft night is also broadcast live into in the Treehouse room of the Virtual Labs. All demos will be shown both in the Labs in Brooklyn and in the Treehouse online.

Craft Night occurs every Monday from 4-8pm EDT at 325 Gold Street, 3rd floor in Brooklyn, New York. Each week the Etsy Labs organize a skill-sharing project. We provide supplies, tools, snacks, and know-how. Participants are also welcome to bring their own projects to work on independently. Craft night is a time to make things, learn new skills, and hang out.

This week, on Monday, October 13, we'll be performing a little eco-alchemy with seamstress extraordinaire Alexia of sakidesigns. She will show us how to transform old t-shirts into new totebags. These upcycled totebags are perfect for carrying your groceries, library books, and Halloween candy! We will demonstrate how to cut, hand-stitch and machine-stitch, and embellish these bags. This project is open to people with all levels of sewing experience.

If you have 2 old t-shirts of the same size that you would like to use to create your project this week, feel free to bring those along. Otherwise, we have everything you will need, including a big ol' box of t-shirts, thread, needles, and sewing machines.

If you are joining us virtually for Craft Night this week and would like to sew along with us, you'll need a few supplies: two knit t-shirts in the same size, hand sewing needle or sewing machine, thread for hand sewing (preferably embroidery thread) or for machine sewing (any thread is fine), a sharpie to trace the pattern and that's it! Or, just be ready to take some notes and see if this is a project you'd like to try out later on.

Special Interview: Amy Sedaris

To those of you who are familiar with Amy Sedaris, please join us in excited squealing. To those of you that haven't yet had the pleasure, The Storque is ecstatic to introduce the hilarious crafty lady known as Amy Sedaris, aka Jerri Blank. Amy is best known for her cult television series Strangers with Candy, her affinity for rabbits and fake food, her hit crafty hostessing book, I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence, and her wickedly unique sense of humor (and voice!) that gets inside your head and just never leaves.

The Storque is SO EXCITED to give you this special interview with Amy. But first, here's a little video introduction, where Amy appeared on Todd Oldham's (her bff) television show, Handmade Modern. (They decoupage tables!)

Without further ado, here's Amy!

How do you, Amy Sedaris, set the mood for entertaining at a party?
Lighting helps me in this situation, as well as music, and the pill I just swallowed.

What is your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorites was getting my best friend to load up my lunch box with candy. Her father was a candy distributor, so there was a huge closet full of candy in the house.

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
I enjoy all the holidays. I like having something around to keep me in the spirit. Halloween I get a pumpkin, Christmas I put up a tree and I will dye eggs at Easter. You know, the usual.

Do you go back to North Carolina for the holidays? Do you consider yourself a Southern Belle?
I consider myself a New Yorker when I'm in N.C. and I consider myself a Southerner when I'm in N.Y. I go home and visit 3 times a year.

What do you like to give as gifts for loved ones?
I just like a gift that shows you put some thought into it.

Do you incorporate any of your costumes and personalities into your parties?
Sometimes. The last time I dressed up in full costume was for Sangria Night.

If you were to take one of those magazine quizzes about your fashion sense, what would the results be?
"Costume. Too young. Too homemade looking. Rickrack?"

Your fake cakes are really popular. What's the secret?
Having someone else frost them for me.

I've never been a part of this craft fair so I'm excited. I love meeting crafty people.

Can you tell us about your collections and what drives these passions?
I like to hang on to things in case I need them to use for something else. I love a good prop. I would love to have my own prop and costume shop. I have stuff from first grade. Some things I keep for fear of running out, like cupcake pokes. I have too many.

We love seeing you on Letterman. Can you tell us a bit more about your relationship?
I don't kiss and tell.

Paper Night at EtsyLabs!

If you missed last Monday's Craft Night, you missed out on the junkiest junk food and good old crafting fun. Don't miss this Monday's paper themed night! We'll be doing Origami, Gocco, as well as anything else you'd like to try, whether its paper or paperless. Should I bring my Wii so we can play Paper Mario?
